Army HQ initially was not interested in ladakh and were focused on kashmir. It was major prithi chand and maj kushal chand who convinced srinagar to send 2 dogra with them and they crossed zoji la on foot in winters n set up lehdet, ladakh militia, which later became ladakh scouts. Also, Manali route was not untested, it was well known trade route which was used for centuries. My forefathers were traders who used this route for many centuries and some of their friends acted as guides in 48 as well as in 62 wars.

I think it could have been achieved if enough time was given. We had just gotten to the point where our numbers and resources were in our favour. I think the ceasefire was a mistake. Guess Nehru had a very naive utopian view of the UNSC.
I will be reading this book called the great game. Basically Britain wanted to ensure Soviet Union didn't have access to the Indian subcontinent, and hence the region of Gilgit Baltistan had to remain in a more pliable Pakistan.

So they wanted to keep a more pliable Pakistan in control of Gilgit Baltistan. So there may have been a component of soft power used by Britain to achieve a ceasefire at those line of control

The grim reality of the 1947-48 War is testament to Swatantraveer Savarkar's political and civilizational acumen; had he not convinced the Hindu masses to join the British Indian Army, today the borders would have been much more South since, before WW2 most of the British Indian Army consisted of Momins (most of whom fought for Pakistan in this war). Also, thanks for your brilliant coverage: absolutely love your channel.

This is a completely false observation. The entire British Indian Army was 400,000 in 1947, and the forces were divided by the choice of the soldiers (typically by religion) to join either the Dominion of Pakistan or the Dominion of India. There was a shrinkage of personnel, from the total of 400,000 to around 250,000 to 270,000 for the 'Indian Army', and the balance, 130,000 to 150,000, to the Pakistan Army. However, very prominent Muslim officers, Enaith Habibullah, for instance, who later became Commandant of the NDA, and was seconded to be Deputy GOC of the Malayan Army (as it then was), another, Maj. Gen. Hasnain, the father of Lt Gen. Ata Hasnain, a Major General by the time he retired, and the martyred Brigadier Usman, all stayed with the Indian Army, as did very large numbers of Muslim officers and men.
Four of the Gorkha Regiments opted for the British Army, but six decided to stay back with the former British Indian Army, now the Indian Army, one more was raised as the 11th GR, and there was no other accretion of Hindu masses inspired by the petition-seeking Savarkar whatsoever. There was also no further recruitment, as the government policy in India was not favourable to an increase of numbers.
So this entire fiction of the Hindu masses flocking to join is entirely concocted.
It is a shame that the Indian Army is being sought to be tainted with communal colour by such utterly irresponsible comments.

There were so many side-shows - the siege of Skardu and its surrender, and how Thapa (a States Forces officer, btw) was spared because he was a hockey player whom the top British generals liked, and the rest were killed in cold blood; the assault on Zoji La with Honey tanks; the original mutiny led by Major Alexander Brown in Gilgit; the ambush on the States Forces coming in to support the Wazir of Gilgit....stirring times.

Nice presentation. To add with this, when after so many martyrdom with terrible hardship at extreme mountainous region, while our valiant army was successfully pushing back those foreign invaders, it was our top political leadership who went to UN seeking for their mediation over wrong subject "disputed territory"! What disputed ! Maharaja Hari Singh, the king of Kashmir have acceded to India following the international law as the other princely states were acceded to India during the Independence.
The victorious forces never went for mediation until the invaders are not completely out of our country which is entire Jammu & Kashmir, Gilgit & Baltistan, entire Ladakh or any other places within the kingdom of Maharaja Hari Singh was & is Indian territory by International law as the two country signed the instrument of accession during 1947. But our premier did unilaterally! Result is cease fire imposed on victorious army who was very near to complete victory!! That cease fire line is to day's LOC. We lost gifted one third of J & K with G B to the newly formed invading country!
