    Hi Rick. Too much memories from the 80s. My heroic era when we needed a 3m dish, moving by actuator..... Huge LNBs, very noisy, low sensibility. Intricate mounts and alignment where you had to use declination along with azimuth and elevation.
    An easy job nowadays. Thanks again for the memories.

    The different channels with different languages does not transmit on each satellite. Normally it works like this Astra 19.2 east has many different languages english, german, etc. And same goes for 13 east. So each language does not have it own satellite.

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair
      @LearnElectronicsRepair  7 місяців тому +2

      True. So this system receives
      Canary Islands TV (Terrestrial Antenna)
      German French and Spanish TV (Astra 19E)
      French and Italian (Hotbird 13E)
      English (BBC, ITV Channel 4) Intelsat 27.5W
      English (Sky) Astra 2 28E
      Sweden, Norway, Finland by IPTV - satellite signals too weak to receive
      This represents the main groups of tourists using this hotel.

    Super interesting dive into satellite systems. Do you find the LNB's break more frequently than other parts of the system? When I dealt with satellite internet tertiary backup connections years ago they were typically what broke down and had to be replaced. I always suspected it was more the quality of (or lack there of) the equipment, though.

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair
      @LearnElectronicsRepair  7 місяців тому +1

      Actually the most common fault here is the coaxial cable from the dish. The sun bakes them and they go hard and brittle. The continuity is still good but the signal won't go down the cable for some reason. After a while the outer plastic sleeve actually breaks up and crumbles. SOmetimes they run the coax through black hose pipes to prevent this or at lesat delay this as the hose pipe also degrades in the sun. This never happened when I ran a similar company in the UK. After that the next most likely problem is the dish goes out of line during high winds, which we get maybe once or twice a year, and after that the LNB.
      In the UK it was most often dish out of line due to bad weather, them LNB failed (because rain got in it mostly) and after that the coax which almost never failed.

    Very interesting video explaining Satellite broadcasts. But I have one question - what is a Wideband LNB? Apparently Sky Q boxes in the UK use a Wideband LNB and this isn't compatible with older Freesat boxes (eg Humax). I'm assuming Wideband means they don't use the Low/High switching frequency with the 2 oscillators and send a much wider range of frequencies down to the receiver box. Thanks.

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair
      @LearnElectronicsRepair  7 місяців тому +1

      Yeah exactly that - the wideband LNB has a single local oscillator so no high band / low band. Obviously is still needs Horizontal and Vertical, this is why the wideband LNB has two cables to the receiver. There are also Quatro LNBs which have four cables for HH, HV, LH, LV to give all the quadrants to multiple receivers simultaneously (not to be confused with Quad Universal LNB which have four independent switchable outputs)

    • @jkmac625
      @jkmac625 7 місяців тому

      Thanks for explaining. So does one cable have all the Vertical channels and the other all the Horizontal channels? I do remember the early Sky/Astra days where you had to tune your satellite receiver manually, but that was just a frequency plus H or V, no Low/High band back then that I recall. The Echostar receiver we had later also had settings for audio, but that was capable of moving the dish so not only Astra but Intelsat/Eutelsat reception.
