Sure he could say it's not good enough and decline the repair then sit there with a beer watching his own customers in the next door bar watching TV, or he could be up and running with a bar full of happy customers earning him money. I'm not sure you would really do any different, it makes no commercial sense.

    JFTR: PCM is "pulse code modulation" and means the audio stream is decoded in the box, and then sent as uncompressed audio (basically like a WAV file) to the TV. Bitstream means the box doesn't touch the encoded audio and just passes it through. Then some other device further downstream (the TV, a sound bar, an AV receiver, etc.) needs to decode the audio and send it to the speakers. Both have pros and cons. For instance, PCM can't do complicated multi-channel setups and fancy stuff like Dolby Atmos. It also doesn't support wireless transmission. Bitstream OTOH requires an audio processor downstream that can interpret the data.
    I don't think it's the case here (since AV is all analogue anyway) but I've had cases where this setting mattered. Someone had set their player to "bitstream" and the old TV couldn't make sense of the newer codec used, so there was no sound. Switching to PCM fixed that.

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair
      @LearnElectronicsRepair  7 місяців тому

      Yeah I've seen these sort of problems, where the box will give sound on one TV but not on another, and that was with the TV connected by HDMI. Thanks for the info, I now understand the cause of that much better 😁

    • @g4z-kb7ct
      @g4z-kb7ct 7 місяців тому +1

      @@LearnElectronicsRepair it worked before so something just went bad in the box. I'm sure no one is playing with the settings. The audio will require either an opamp chip or DAC chip connected to the jack so that's likely to be where the problem is. It would have been future-proof if the guy just used hdmi cables for everything then he can use any available box because hdmi is the main a/v connector used now. Perhaps a future job where you swap out the av cable for a hdmi cable to avoid this situation next time when the whole box gives up. Order the long hdmi cable and fit it at your leisure :-)

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair
      @LearnElectronicsRepair  7 місяців тому +1

      @@g4z-kb7ct HDMI is not the easiest of solutions, there are quite a few TV screen in this bar, not sure how many but maybe eight or so. The screens also have an input from the Karaoke system. In my experience using HDMI leads of various lengths and a HDMI matrix combined with TV of different makes is very problematic. He would need at least a 4x8 HDMI matrix if not a 4X16 which is quite expensive and a lot of long HDMI leads which will add up to some hundred euros for the cables plus installation and it probably would not work very well even when it was done.
      A better solution is to replace the analog modulators with DVB-T modulators and then connect HDMI to the video sources. This is much more reliable, and gives excellent HD quality video (as good as HDMI) using the existing UHF coax. It is also very forgiving of old coax wiring as you can crank up the UHF output power. Also the method of use is same as the analog system he has now (just select a channel on each TV) rather than teaching the bar staff to use the video matrix properly. And if one DVB-T modulator fails you can connect whatever source you want to one of the working ones as a temporary fix, whereas if the HDMI matrix fails the whole system goes down.
      Even with that DVB-T upgrade I have seen some older TV that won't work with the video signal from the modulators. It seems some tuners don't like the MPEG4 encoding or something like that, or they refuse to recognise each channel as being different for some reason, so they scan all the channels in during automatic or manual tuning but only store the last channel scanned (Toshiba I'm calling you out here!) So if he does this upgrade don't be suprised if he needs to replace one or more of the TV too.

      The boxes are connected using AV leads to modulators in the bar (one per box) then to a UHF distribution amp and RF aerial cables to all the TVs. The modulators are set to different UHF frequencies. You tune the TV to each channel, then select the channel number you want to watch on each TV. It's quite simple, the customer was not previously using the HDMI connectors at all. This is why I couldn't just sell him a new box as the more recent models don't have the AV connector.
