Bravo Grant! Fun to see you in France (I'm a Canadian living in France). I thought I could shed some light on some of your questions: Gisors is pronounced with a soft G, which we don't really use in English, but like a French J (Je) : Jeez-or. You were at a normal McDonald's, but many of them also include McCafés, meaning there's a coffee counter with more coffee drink options as well as sweets like macarons, muffins, pastries, etc. If you eat in at a fast-food restaurant, they're no longer allowed to use throw away containers, hence the plastic fry container and real glass. They're trying to cut down on waste. Hope you're recovering nicely from your adventure!

Thanks Alix! Should have probably learnt how to say it before butchering the pronunciation several times on UA-cam 😂 now I know 🙌🏼

I did London to Paris in 2022 with Global Adventure Challenge. Beginning from Croydon, we went to Dover (over the North Downs, VERY hilly!), across the Channel to Calais and that was Day 1, 86 miles. From Calais to Amiens was day 2, 103 miles of lovely French roads (like glass compared to our potholed shockers). Day three was from Amiens to Chantilly, the lovely Hotel Mercure (the glitziest hotel a peasant like me was ever in), 63 miles for the day. Day 4 took us into Paris (and I thought London motorists were bad!). Rode down part of the Champs Elysee, met up in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower for the medal celebration, and then overnighted in Novotel Paris. 40 miles. Day 5 was a sightseeing day until we caught the Eurostar for the journey home. If they had asked for volunteers to cycle all the way home again I would have been at the front of the queue. By the way, at the time I was 74 years old. The best thing I have done in my life.😁

This sounds like an incredible trip… A core life memory indeed! You took the serious route… My route was a bit of a ‘freestyle’ bastardised from various things I’d seen.
I can imagine the north downs made for a brutal day - I found London to Newhaven tough enough!
Well done to you for staying active in your 70’s. I find excuses in my 30’s but I know the older I get the more important it is! Are you still cycling now? I need to plan another bike adventure soon.

I was lucky enough that friends drove to Paris so we got the bike back in a car on the ferry. I met some lads out there that just wrapped their bikes in blankets/rope they bought out there for the train. That did the job!

@@nathanhampshire8283 also, I’ve had a btwin, did a leg of the Tour de France on it… and it failed me. They’ve prob got way better than when I had one but I’m not sure they are made for touring / long rides. Also, the bike lock is just a deterrent… someone will take it if they really want to but when you’re touring you are never that far away from your bike. I was more worried about this in the planning than once I was doing it. The lock is just a deterrent, but made me feel better about leaving it on the odd occasion.
