In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to Neal Morse Band for the first time.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

First off, anyone who was in a band that was deemed “too progressive “ by the labels is ok by me. Second, I’m a classically trained musician and I’ve been playing and listening to “progressive music” for 48 years. This piece just may be the finest composition and performance that I’ve ever heard. Ever. I won’t go into the virtuosity of Eric Gillette, (lead guitar) or the incredible arrangement by all the band members or the beautiful opening motif or just how difficult it is to play something like this. So, with or without that said, I recommend you listening to this a few more times and letting it get into your psyche. I may bring tears to your eyes at times and make you laugh out loud in others. I’m not saying that I experienced this, oh no, not me.
Or did I? Well, at any rate, this is incredibly powerful and beautiful. I’ll just leave it at that.
Oh yeah, Neal Morse is verging on genius territory with this one…

Heard this performed live last night in Seattle!
    Absolutely astounding musicianship.
Love Neal and his group of saints, even mighty Mike ..got myself Neals setlist, Mikes sticks, and a signed 12inch tom-head with all the bands Mike has played in.
It was a great night of music at a GREAT venue, the Triple Door.

I missed you, ma fren! I may not get time to watch every single vid, and some I may just watch and fall asleep before coming up with a good comment, but honestly, just seeing your notifications in my feed every day or so puts me at ease, knowing you're still there crankin' out the content is a comfort. I don't know if I'm making much sense, but not having seen you for a while really did affect me- I was starting to get worried. 😭
So awesome to check out this new vid! You take care of yourself and your family, ya hear?

It is so sad that people can't absolutely love such kind of brilliance in music. They probably love to be bored to death by 3 minute 2 or 3 chord shit ( I like that as well), this is truly some of the greatest music made in rock history or in music history ever. Give yourself time to learn to appreciate and to love it by listening to this more so you can get used to it. Not liking the many changes and the fast playful parts of this is crazy to me. That is like ordering a big meal and just eating and appreciating the potatoes of the whole meal, insane to me to realise this. This is close to perfection, or is it even perfection??? Mayb yes.

Nice reaction. Hope you enjoy your NMB journey. You mentioned Russian Dolls at one point to describe the music. I wonder if you were subliminally influenced by the following lyric from the vocal acapella section in the style of Gentle Giant:
    Hidden deep among us
    In covers of the wintertime
Playing with the reasons of who you are
    Russian dolls are
Dissolving in every layer of the rhyme
Closer than the distance the near that's far

      @grahamkey8496 2 роки тому +1

And 123! I agree it got a bit choppy in the middle. Possibly because this album was more of a group composition, whereas earlier Neal Morse/NMB albums were more fully formed by Neal himself before taking them into the studio. You could try the albums "Similitude Of A Dream" which really needs to be listened to as a whole, or from the album "Sola Scriptura" you could maybe react to each track starting with The Door which features an astonishing solo from the one and only Paul Gilbert. Sorry it's another 30 minute track but well worth the effort.

    Comment 123?
I agree with your assessment of this song. It could have been an amazing song, even EPIC but it lost its way in the 'showoff' parts. Someone needs to tell Neal that not every idea that pops in his head needs to go in the song. If the song had a consistent arch it would have been like a modern Stairway to Heaven or something like that. I just see wasted potential trying to be a little TOO artsy.
You gotta do the song 'Broken Sky/Long Day' from the album 'Similitude of a Dream'. That is one absolutely epic track, brother!

A heart for my comment, well just being nice, ok. Just liking the simple quieter parts is like cutting all violin, piano virtuosos away from the whole pieces if art. Mourning about it being far too much. All those great classical, baroque or jazz, folklore composers were all wrong??? Come on.
