- Take a tour through one of Calgary’s oldest neighborhoods, and check out some of the more interesting historical landmarks in Victoria Park.
PLEASE READ THE NOTES FOR THIS VIDEO
This video only focuses on a certain area of Victoria Park, and does not include all the heavily restored and renovated brick and sandstone buildings in the area. I know about other interesting buildings in the Beltline as well, and I will focus on them at a later date.
The history I give about Victoria Park is super condensed, but if you would like to know more about it please visit the local history room at the downtown location of the Calgary Public Library.

RIP Enoch Sales House 1904-2019
Blendeture damn
Enoch Sales was a great uncle of mine. He was the son of my 3rd great-grandfather, George Alsop Sales, who moved to Calgary from Merlin, Ontario. The Sales family originally emigrated to Kent County, Ontario from Yorkshire, England.
Thanks for sharing. Many people in Calgary wanted to save the house; however, CMLC did nothing to protect it.
My grandparents lived in the yellow house when they came here from Germany. My grandma hated it. The other renters were rough she says. She still complains about it. She once hit a drunk renter with a 2 by 4 because he wouldn't let her in the front door. She also talks about having to share a bathroom and washing dishes in the tub.
My great grandmother did the same only in Winnipeg. The drunken boarder was dealt with by my great grandfather.
Lived in Calgary for 50years. My Aunt’s house was right across from where the Saddledome is today so I am familiar this area.born in 1942
We lived right down there where Olympic way is now about circa 1970 -1971 I was 3 I'm 50 seen a lot of weird shit there man thanks for showing this brings back great memories awesome
First neighbourhood we lived in when we emigrated to Canada as refugees , in 1957. We lived in a house just 2 down from the Stephenson Grocery (don't remember if that was it's name then) The "Rundle" hospital building I remember as having Nursing Sisters going in and out all the time. The building had a very weird fire escape chute at the back that us kids would climb up and slide down. We also lived in two other houses, one across 12 Ave from Vic Park Elementary, the other kitty-corner to the school. I loved living in the neighbourhood. Easy as pie to sneak into the Calgary Stampede at the time too. We knew all the little holes in the fences. Loved the video. Thanks for the memories.
The demolishing of the hospital is easily one of the most disappointing things Calgary could have done, especially considering most of any historical landmarks left are few or demolished as well. That building was beautiful, regardless the fact it may not have been serving a purpose at the time. They could have at least saved it for a later date where refurbishing it for another purpose would have been beneficial. The architecture and structure was great. I'm all for moving forward in the means of progressing a new city, but it's pretty sad when all the old architecture that built the city was at its expense. Now all we have are pictures and that's literally it.
RIP to the old yelliow house - It burned down this year (2019) fir those who didn't know
Ben Petros fuuuuuck I didn’t know
My grandma had lived in a house few doors down from the old yellow house it’s no long there but you can still see where it used to be 😔 it saddens me as to how much the stampede has taken away from this historical area and just made more parking lots 😒
That’s Crazy I didn’t realize how legit neighborhoods were torn down for parking lots 👀
@@jamesprovost2602We have it in England,Government building paid for by local residents and 30 years later sold for £1 pound as a parking lot,One off many rip offs where locals pay millions in rates and tax and later sold to a private developer for PEANUTS
Enoch Sales home burned down today, February 2nd 2019. Tough to see one of the last remaining residences in Victoria park reduced to rubble while Municipal developers wasted our taxpayers dollars on public art projects like "Bowfort Towers" or a Giant Blue Ring. Thanks for making this video when you did.
Eric Verdone Yes ..definitely ..sad that Enoch house wasn't restored by the city & made into a small museum or heritage bldg. for tours etc..sat dumped & dilapidated for years (drove by it daily ) Now its a Stampede party venue tent on the lot..
I'm a local photographer and take photos of most of these buildings. It's great to get more history on them from what I've been able to find. Thanks! And great vids!
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it.
Rest In Peace Enoch Sales house
Very nice documentary I miss living in Victoria Park
You make myself and others really excited about the history of the city! I hope we can preserve or repurpose some of these buildings so that others may enjoy them.
Thanks for watching!
I've recently made it a habit to watch your videos whenever I'm abroad for work and they make me homesick for this awesome city
I just moved to Calgary from Ontario... what an excellent channel you have here.
I stumbled upon this video....I no longer live in Calgary but when I did, my saturdays were spent wandering around neighborhoods trying to find cool houses and hidden gems in the city and I love your videos, just watched all of them. Subscribed and keep them coming!!!
Hi Kelsey. I worked briefly for Calgary Stampede driving one of their Mollies (motorized trolley buses) for school groups, other groups, and stampede events. One things I learned, during my time there, was that the red block building 602 (Stephen Grocery?) was bought, ready for contruction, out of the Sears catalogue. Yes, this is true. It was shipped west from Sears down east, by train, and put together on site, like Lego.
I find this fact amazing! For more information on this building, and Victoria Park's "Hundred Year Old Tree" being preserved in one of Stampede's parking lots, contact Calgary Stampede (Historian and/or Archivist).
Thanks for the info, very cool. I remember reading about this prefabricated homes made by Eatons or Sears in a history course I took at UCalgary. I think there's a few of them still in the city. I know someone over in the history department at the Stampede, I will connect with her.
@@kelsynorman Great! So glad I could help. I've always loved history and sites around Calgary and area really intrigue me.
The yellow house just burnt down, February 2 2019. 🥺
Thanks for doing this video. I've lived in Calgary all my 61 years and worked at the VP transit garage for over 20 and I've got to say, your knowledge and love for the city really shows. Well done!
Thank you for your kind words, when I get comments like that, it encourages me to keep making these videos! Thanks for watching, thanks for supporting!
As always man, your videos are fantastic and I stop everything I'm doing to watch them. Thanks for doing them!
Thank you!
As a newcomer to Calgary I find these videos a fantastic way to learn about the cities history. Thanks for sharing 👍
Welcome to Calgary! Happy to help you get aquatinted with the city. Also, thanks for watching.
I’ve always been curious of that yellow house.
Omg I live in Calgary!!
*YES FINALLY I KNOW WHAT HOUSE IS ABOUT!* I always drive by the house when I go to stampede
Love your videos! I work in the Victoria Park area (for the last 6 months as a Calgary newbie) and drive past these locations every day and have always wanted to know more about them but haven’t done the research.
I love historic architecture and stories and I find your videos to be very well shot; thought out; and detailed.
Love these videos! You should do one one the ever shrinking supply of historic Victorian homes along Memorial drive in the Hillhurst area
Thanks for the suggestion, I will add it to the list of potential videos!
As a Calgarian, I appreciate this! Keep em coming.
ive lived in calgary for over 20 years and i do know those landmarks and the general neighborhood. your video makes me think of victoria park completely differently.
My man love the vid. I use to party in that house i could tell you so much. I work forthe heritage foundation in calg. 😊
always love your stuff man, great editing
Thanks, I appreciate the support! Working on a new video now, should be out in the next few weeks.
in the Rivers District Master Plan there is mention of the 12th Avenue bridge being replaced at some point in the future
Very well put together video!
I work very close to the area of the yellow house and have been inside many of the buildings you discussed in the video. Knowing the history of them really puts things in context. I never would have guessed Oliver House was made with pressed concrete instead of sandstone
Awesome video. Having just moved here its great to learn more about the local history.
It’s sad that the yellow house is gone because someone burned it down at least that’s what I’ve heard, I used to drive past it every once in a while
Great video. Enjoyed this, and your other pieces very much. Great visuals, great soundtrack, well researched. Great stuff!!!
Hey Kelsy. If you ever do an update on Vic Park. Consider including the Imperial Liquor and Tobacco warehouse (now Imperial Lofts). Imperial L&T also had a shop on 8th Ave. I think the warehouse was built in 1905? I came across a Glenbow photo of the Alexandria hotel with the Imperial warehouse under construction in the background.
I was sad to see you did not include the beautiful Calgary Arts Academy youth campus building in this piece. The restoration/modernization of this building means its beauty is there for future generations to enjoy. It also marks the return of a public school to the Victoria Park area.
Hopefully in the next few years the schools presence in Victoria Park will expand with Elementary and High School classes joining the middle schoolers on the campus.
RIP yellow house
So glad you did a video on this!
Thanks for watching.
Kelsey, that was very well done and quite informative. Thanks.😎👍
I always wondered about that house. Keep up the good work!
Another great video! Thank you so much for sharing the history of the city with us!
I really enjoy making these videos, glad you folks like watching them.
What a great job. I really enjoyed this, hopefully you do more. Thank you.
Thank you! Make sure you check out my other Calgary history videos, which I think you will enjoy.
This was amazing thanks for doing this
Amazing Calgary . I love Calgary
Really enjoying these videos muh dude! I grew up in Calgary but have been living the Newfoundland & The UK for many years. Really enjoy learning more about my home towns history tho
And the Canadian Wild West!
Great video. Living near Victoria park in Ramsay, I really enjoyed learning the history of the neighborhood just down the street.
How is Ramsey doing? Is it getting better?
Thanks for doing this.
Kelsy, this is really good stuff!
Fantastic min-doc. Great work as alwasy!
Thank you, Samurai Fingers!
of course!
Great job.
awesome!
Can you do a video about the history of lindsay park and Dr.lindsay and his passion for health and fitness?
2:38 It's sad to say that this house suffered severe fire damage earlier today at the time of writing this. (02/02/2018)

Well done K.N. !
Have taken so many photos of that place.
Well done.
Thank you!
Bravo 👏👏👏👏👏
Everything is gone now. Not one house left! Just the grocery store building. We lose so much history.
In my opinion, if the Stampede owns these properties, I think they should help to save them. These buildings are a part of Calgary's history and could easily be put to use as a location for local vendors, for the Stampede itself as well as for locals. Art galleries, local artisans, and the like would give the area color and benefit everyone. I know that if Stampede Park was to expand, they could then easily incorporate the buildings into its landscape.
Sick video
I live in Calgary.
So do I!
House caught fire and demolished
Thanks
I am a lot of people always wondered what was the story about Rundle ruins which I now have a name for.
I haven't driven past it for a little while and with the all the expansion going on with the Stampede and everything they want to do I hope they leave it alone
You share your research and love of the city in a fantastic entertaining way. That's a great skill! I hate to be that guy though, it's dilapidated, not "dilapitated"! (@ 2:35)
Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate the support.
One time I was inside of this old house ..my buddy told me taht owner is one very old Bulgarian man.. I don't know is this correct ..!? House that time looks like to me ``Haunted house`` very scary .woow! Thx for sharing this video & I shoot LIKE ! 😉 😊 😋 😎
The Enoch burned today!!
And holy moly that old yellow house is so old they have lead piping haha
That was a very cool neighbourhood before money and politics destroyed it.
Good fuckin work man!
i know the guy who owns the house... wont say who it is but i can tell you he's had a real problem keeping the junkies out.
This place was called rock central for years by local bands until it got shut down
You're thinking about the house next door, there is a photo of it at the beginning of the video.
Hate to say it... time for an update :(
Awesome stuff! Just saw your video suggested and nice to see a fellow yyc UA-camr. I’m just getting started on my channel...we should connect and collab if you’re interested!
Still no safe, reasonably priced housing, these old houses r our only hope
Bridgeland general hospital gone.
Yellow house is no more.
Too bad this house burned down conveniently when council was going to vote on what to do with it.
It's tragic that Calgary has allowed the Stampede to destroy Victoria Park.
