A Calgary Dream in Ruins

  • Calgary, Alberta has its fair share of intriguing houses. But for me, Calgary’s most interesting house ever, was an unfinished sandstone castle on the banks of the Elbow River. This is the story of Lindsay’s Folly, a Calgary Pioneer’s dream home that now sits in ruins.
Here is a map to all the locations mentioned in the video, go out and explore them: goo.gl/H564z8

We just moved to Mount Royal. The kids and I were just on a hike exploring the area and stumbled upon this curiosity. Thanks to you, we now know the story! Getting the kids interested in history is easier because of cool videos like this. Thanks!

Please keep making these videos! I love that somebody is making videos on tidbits of Calgary's history. I really enjoy your style; the easygoing music, use of dynamic and static imagery, as well as the animated portions blend really well together. The content is well researched and presented excellently. Whatever process you are using, keep using it!

Wow, thank you for the kind words, the support I have received for making these videos has been super positive. I am a recent Education grad who is now working as a sub in the CBE, so I research local history and create these stories when I am not subbing. When it comes to video, I am self taught, but I have a background in art and design and photography. I am just happy people are learning from these videos, and that they get excited about Calgary because of them. Definitely more to come, I have been working on the next one for the past few days.

Fantastic video! Having been born and raised in Calgary since the mid 70's, I thought I knew every nook and cranny because I used to spend a great deal of my time exploring from my pre teens (7 or 8yrs old) to my early 20s. A friend and I would walk or use our bikes all the way out to the city limits SW,SE,NW, NE, every off beaten track within the city, exploring in the bushes and even extremely old hidden underground tunnels we'd find. Wed be gone before sun up to sundown. Either we both had crappy parents because they never got worried, or it really was just a different time back then. We found some straight up scary stuff at times including remains on 2 occasions.. I cannot think that I'd have forgotten about this ruin! Either way thank you for this delightful find!!!
    Subbed!! :-)

    • @kelsynorman
      @kelsynorman  6 років тому +1

Hey, that's how I am now! I am always snooping around, exploring within the city on foot, bike, or car. Thanks for subbing, and thanks for the support!

Kelsy Norman Hey Kelsy!! For some odd reason I just received a notification of someone liking my comment. I am so sorry! I haven't been receiving any video's in my sub box either and I do have the bell turned on... Definitely going to see what I've missed.
Did you grow up here as well? Have you been to the Ink Pots at the top of Johnston Canyon? Not sure if it is true or not but I heard that the flood destroyed them. I seriously hope not!! Bad enough that my favorite lake Forget Me Not is just gone, as though it never existed in the first place along with a bunch of my favorite places to go...
I've been considering for quite some time since moving back here of getting my channel fired back up making a variety of Calgary and surrounding areas videos. I think it would be fun for me while being hopefully interesting to others. Think I only have 20 subs but thats no big deal. Hopefully people will find me. I remember the city skyline back when the Calgary Tower was the tallest building here and in Canada. Super cool seeing how much has changed for its 50th anniversary. (I'm not that old mind you...just turning 42 in 12 days)
Most definitely keep exploring and uploading! You make fantastic content. Happy Stampede!!!!
      YEEEEEEEE-HAWWWWW!!! (lol) 🐴🐮🐃🎡🎢🎶🏇🐎
Edit: Just noticed that UA-cam unsubbed me from your channel! Figure I better let you know incase it's happened to some of your other subs..

Interesting work. My family is from here and we have a building with our family name on it in what is now Ingelwood. Right next door west to the "Gary Theatre", which is now a Blues and Jazz club. My grandfather, Erastus, was a doctor and owned a few buildings in Calgary. The "Drum and Monkey" is a site of one of the buildings he owned also. It used to be a club called "Slack Alice's" . Nice video work, loved the history lesson. Thank you!

Wow, growing up on Stanley Drive us kids used to explore 'Lindsays Castle' on a regular basis. We also found a whole bunch of bones just south of the Castle tucked into the side of the hill closer to the river bank but above the pathway. I always wondered if it may have been a spot for a native buffalo jump. Great video and thanks!

I remember walking along that 'cliff' as a kid, and seeing very sparse remnants of stone here and there. It's so sad they renamed the Lindsay Park Athletic Centre after companies that paid thousands to get their name in advertising. Let's retain our heritage and keep the the names of historical figures (Alexander Calhoun, Dr. Lindsay and others) in public view.

Calgary has an utterly embarrassing record for not appreciating and subsequently razing its historical architecture to the ground for glass and steel. Having lived in Europe for 26 years now, I have a whole new appreciation for how Europeans have preserved their history....many places having been rebuilt from the ground up after devastation of war. Places like Dresden, Berlin, Warsaw, Hamburg, Köln, Belgrade, Budapest and many more reconstructed their treasured architecture to its original design and beauty. The communist era of Central/Eastern Europe did its best to uglify the cities it held its grip on for decades but even they knew the value if their historical treasures.
