Mind The Gap was a Live online event raising awareness of mental health issues and support World Mental Health Day. We want to show how modelling and hobbies can help those struggling with their mental health.
Hosted by Mike from Hornby’s Signal Box the event included a mix of live and pre-recorded content from partners, collaborators and our in house brands.
During the live event we will raise awareness of mental health issues and show how modelling and hobbies can help during hard times.

Saw the layout in Chester Cathedral, loved it as did my two Grandsons. Had the pleasure of a brief conversation with Pete and he kindly autographed his book for me.
I thoroughly enjoyed the chat. I was born around the same time as Pete and was introduced to model railways by receiving a train set for Christmas in 1956. We were living in Germany at the time so the set was German outline. On our return to the UK, a switch was made to British items. I've never looked back and have had a model railway in some form ever since. Like Pete, once I started work I commuted by train for 30 years. I'm now retired but I always take a train whenever I can. Having visited the layout in Chester, I'm very pleased to learn that I can repeat the experience next year. I'm looking forward to it.
Likewise I had a Hornby Dublo 3 rail N2 tank with goods wagons set in 1953 at the age of 5, it must have cost a lot in those days although better built than the Tri-ang ones.
Watching Pete talking about his experiences with model rail is an inspiration and shows that the hobby is open to anyone from any background of any age.
Very interesting video. The hobby must be accessible to all especially the young more needs to be done to encourage them into the hobby including the prices railroad range is quite a good option but must be made larger.
Absolutely superb, could watch this for hours , my 1st train set , was a 2nd hand triang from a jumble sale in 1983 for 75p , I was so excited to get home , only to set it up & find it didn’t work , I sat for hours just pushing the loco round the track
Terrific natter between two kingpins of the hobby! Thanks to Hornby, We are privileged to enjoy running the OO Live Steam Roadshow at various events and the greatest joy is not necessarily playing trains but watching the faces and reactions of the youngsters who are actively encouraged to have a go and drive a steam train. Absolutely priceless to see and proof that the model railway hobby is far from dead, it just needs nurturing and feeding to the young ones as a real option to sitting and doing precious little with their expanding lives!! Well done to all involved!!!!
Great interview. Am lucky to live near Chester and visited twice. It was brilliant and as Pete said, seeing young children so excited was fantastic. Pete and others were great to talk to and unlike a lot of exhibitions you visit, they ALL made the public welcome and spoke with them. Normally, the operators just talk amongst them selves and not the public.

I’ve been listening to this chat whilst soldering point motors and found it very entertaining and remember my mother always saying about clean underwear in case you got run over. I travelled all over London on red rover and twin rover tickets most summer holidays from the age of about 10 years old . I would be horrified if I found that a child of mine had gone out on their own like that in this day and age. Well remember the party line telephone. Brought back some wonderful memories. Thanks for this I will have to watch it again. Roy.
Really enjoyed the conversation between these guys, nice to hear their passion for railways. Had chance to visit the Chester layout during the summer and talk with Pete Waterman, well worth the visit to see a great enjoyable layout running trains, so real…. Brings back memories of the stock running then compared to now. Well done all round for promoting a great hobby…

When I was a younger. Mum, Dad & Grandparents came together to get me my first trainset. it was the Queen of Scots train pack, Golden Plover in BR Green and 3 Pullmans...Still have them now. Now being older I've actually moved up a scale too 7mm, making that jump was hard to do, but I have enjoyed doing it as I am now building everything from buildings, to track, locomotives & wagons it's been an amazing and it's meant that I have enjoyed the hobby 100% more than I was just buying loco's and then running them.

I was introduced to train's by my dad he was a driver at Hull dairycoats and I remember him taking me to work with him and taking on a steam locomotive and it blew off steam and I ran out of the shed 🤣 I have now just started with a model railway well my friend and carer has and friend's have built it for me as I am now disabled with m.s and in a wheelchair but thanks for an interesting video

What a fantastic interview 👍🏻 Pete and Simon’s story’s are awesome 🤩 I can remember sitting in scrap engines at Barry island thinking if only I could of driven them for real 😂 I missed a lot of steam because I was 11 in 68 😫 Hopefully I’ll visit the layout at Chester next year 👍🏻

Pete hit on something Hornby has always missed: children relate to (modern) trains that they see in real life. As a kid of the 90s and based on the south coast, Hornby had that problem even then. Where are the Wessex Electric or the 444. If they can't build trains for a price point for children, at least make trains that are relatable.

Somewhere I watched Simon explain the basis for the very successful Smokey Joe locomotive being a photograph of the original locomotive with a chalked in name on the saddle tank. Shown to Simon by the dealer principal of Railmail of Watford.
Would love to find it again to have this important but of history on record.

It's not playing trains, It's a history lesson using models to tell the story.
Fiddle yards are always the best bit!
What I think you are saying is trains are fun providing they are modern.
I have documented on UA-cam more than once that my CV said 'loves cars and trains, hates trains' but why. When I was five or six Uncle Walt who drove a steam train between between London and Dover took me and my dad down to the engine shed. I climed onto the footplate, it was cold, smelly, and I screamed my head off. Dont think Dad every forgave me.
When are you going to update your 1/24 Spitfire and Hurricane, you could add a lot of internal detail to the existing tooling its metal off. And another idea I would like you to consider is DCC++ kits for the electronic lads.

The term 'train set' seems to be applied to a layout but I believe a train set is actually a package of railway stock that you would buy as a 'set'. Rather than buy individual items you buy a 'set' of wagons, coaches, plus a loco and possibly even some track and a controller. Therefore a layout I see as a scenic 'train set'.
The term I do object to is 'toy'. A toy is a vague representation of the real thing in both physical AND movement detail and is for kids. What I deal with are models. To model something in my mind means to represent something in 3D as accurately as possible at a smaller size to the original. Scientists will use models to study something, and those models need to be accurate, but only in the area they are studying. Railway modellers want full modelled detail. A true model therefore I see as something that is a smaller copy in both physical AND movement detail, but it saddens me to see many models are not accurate in the movement detail and very often I see them move like toys and I think this gives model railways a bad reputation and invites jokes about toy trains. I think a true model should have flywheels bigger (if possible) than the motor so that it is virtually impossible to make it move like a toy. A model should not have an 'off' button for modelled movement.
