one note for the plastic bin water tank method - use 3 bins stacked one inside another and the rims together will be rigid enough to prevent the sides from buckling outward.
I have a '95 200 hp offshore, it looks identical to yours. I had the very same issue you did, my telltail even turned to straight steam. The engine was very hot. I didn't even check the t-stats as I changed them two years ago. Instead, I pulled the lower unit first, checked the impeller and it was in nearly the same condition as yours. Found no other issues with it. I put everything back together (without changing the impeller as it was changed two years ago, too) and now it runs with no issues. My outboard had not been run in two years before this incident. I wonder if letting it sit for a long period of time somehow impedes the flow from the pump to the block, but I hardly know what it could be.
The impeller should be changed at least once every 2 years due to its crummy design. I was dumbfounded when I replaced a new impeller and everything worked fine. Son
I am from Argentina. I don't know if your problem was solved. I give you my idea. Many people change the impeller rotor but do not change the gasket that is under the pre-chamber. Not under the plate where the rotor rotates, I say the one under the plastic casing that is under the plate. Look for the exploded view in the workshop manual. There are times when the pump loses pressure there. I don't know if it is correct my translation and if my concepts are understood. Congratulations for you channel.👍
Poor water pressure will not be able to counter act the spring of the poppet valve. Removing the spring is a good test. Cutting a couple of turns of the spring will cure the problem until the right water pressure is restored.
I’m running into same problem with my 150 merc it overheated on me so I checked the thermostat and they were original so I replaced them haven’t tried to run it yet but now I’m nervous. Previous owner said he put new impeller in
I bet the bad thermostats overworked the impeller, causing it to fail. Then, after replacing the thermostats. The water circulates with left restruction..
good video, when you put the impeller cover on which way do you turn the drive shaft, clock or counter clock to seat the impeller? thanks in advance. Saw the fire video, hope you and your family are doing well.
Thank you so much for your videos, they've been very useful. I could use your help with something. I have a 1986 75hp 4 cylinder that is overheating but I can't locate a thermostat on the motor, nor in the schematics. Someone in a forum said that the 4cylinders don't have a thermostat?! Do you know if that's true? Thanks
Glad to see you got it fixed! Super annoying when you replace the part and check that off your list, just to find out its faulty - where do you have your temp gauge hooked up? is it from the port or starboard head, and how many wires? I am looking to add a temp gauge as well!
Thermostats only work during the fitst couple of minutes after starting the engine. Once fully opened is when telltale starts peeing water steadily. Poppet valve should start opening after 1500 rpm are being reached, but low water pressure (from partially clogged paths) may avoid Poppet valve to start opening at 1500 rpm but at much higher rpm. Some people have cut a small part of the spring at the poppet valve because a good spring tension was too much force to be counter acted by the lower than expected water pressure from partially clogged water passages. The next reason for overheating comes from a damaged electronic units by a bad sparkplug high voltage coil. Replacing all 6 coils and both control units, in this case, should cure the overheating problems.
Might not have been the impeller. Could also have been your gasket stack. If you had one wrong paper gasket or put one upside down or bottom gasket on top or vice versa, it can cause the exact problems you were having. Literally went through the exact problem you were have last month when I figured it out.
Getting more into my 1970 800. Just pulled lower unit. Surprise. Oil seal failed. Seems to be locked in forward. Coming from Mercruiser stuff. I should be able rotate lower shift shaft to test forward/reverse? Everything seemed to work before pulling. Just confused.

The impeller blades will take a "set" just sitting and can cause low water pressure.

Neutral.

Should be 2 or 3 bolts you remove below the internal harness. It should pop right off.

Waterflow issue. Easy. Son
Rounding off the 1/2sae trim anode with a 13mm then smashing on a 12 mm is comical.
Fake it till you make it lol.
The impeller that came out was cooked. When they bend it’s no good replacement was how they should be.
Poppet valve always is the steam and hot water pee
Water pressure gauge would have shown you the problem from the get go. Temp gauges are not to be trusted they are not immersed in the cooling water.
This engine does not have a psi guage for whatever reason. I suppose I could retro fit one.
Easy job mate, T it in to your poppit line that runs off top of block. Done
