  • This video shows how to pickle magnolia petals. The flavour is similar to a mild pickled ginger with floral tones. A favourite in parts of England, Asia and Japan. It's very interesting in flavour but an acquired taste for some.

    Nothing is more beautiful than a magnolia tree I live in Arizona and when I went to Georgia and saw magnolia trees everywhere I was amazed, So happy you saved your blooms, love your videos

      Chester. We’ve been inseparable since he was 8 weeks, he recently turned 13 years old. Luv him thanks for watching. These were interesting to make and eat. Go great with sushi too.

    Where I lived in southern Mn. the Merrill Magnolia bloomed in April when the Forsythia bloomed. I never worried about frost issues, even tho we still had two months of threats .I found them to be pretty tough specimens. Your neighbors must have wondered, "what is that Suzy up to now". lol

      Omg Donna you’re right. I only had one bloom the prior year so I wasn’t taking any chances. The pickled petals are an acquired taste. So many cultures enjoy them so I was eager to try it for myself. I enjoyed them most with sushi. Enjoy your magnolia tree, it’s really spectacular just to look at. Thanks for watching.

    Magnolias are ancient and thus primitive as they exhibit their floral parts as free (not fused to each other), equal (petals and sepals are alike although in different positions and are referred to as "tepals") numerous, spiral (the tepals are arranged in a spiral rather than on the same plane) and hypogynous (the stamens and pistil sit above the tepals). Just a note from your friendly neighborhood plant taxonomist in Morgantown, West Virginia.

    Is this called a tulip magnolia?I have thr white ones,but want the pink tree.

      Hi there. I believe mine is called a “ saucer magnolia”. I’m in Ontario ; Collingwood, Zone 6a: 23.3°C to -20.6°

    So you can use our southern magnolias. The big trees? I know they are different from the Japanese magnolias? I can’t wait to find out

      I have read you can. But it’s alway wise to double check with your local department of agriculture, they will know specifics to your area. Better to be safe

    Did this last with a recipe that did not use water . I am wondering why a recipe would not use water . I will use your recipe next time.
