    This video pushed me over the finish line . I ended up buying one of these . Then after 4 driving seasons traded up to a 991.2 gt3 and was blown away at how they managed to make something so good , even better . I’m now in year 8 of daily driving gt3’s and it never gets old ! I’ve only had pdk’s but am seriously thinking about throwing my hat in the ring for a 992 gt3 Touring but they seem to be in limited supply again . Lying on my death bed someday , I’ll look back at a handful of highlights in my life and having been one of the lucky ones to have had these cars will definitely be on the list . But ….. after eight years of driving these cars , I must say that Chris Harris has an uncanny understanding of the balance of these cars . His effortless drifting is something to behold

      .2 is really not that much better, it’s just more reliable engine, as far as performance goes, only those tracking them hard can really tell the small difference 👍

    • @bernardrubble8703
      @bernardrubble8703 Рік тому +1

      @@genegade that is as one thing I noticed right from the start . I was a bit worried about the engine fire issue of the .1 but what really pushed me towards the .2 was the amount of glitchy things with the .1 . I had to replace both mufflers , not at the same time , because of malfunctioning sport exhaust , they broke the studs off of the resonating chamber between the mufflers , luckily under warranty , with towing that was 13k, I had a Solenoid go in the PDK and got an error message not to drive , another 6 hour tow to the nearest Porsche Dealer at the time , the engine lid locking mechanism failed , couldn’t get into the back to clean or add oil which I had to do several times between oil changes . It’s been 6 years but I know that I’m forgetting some other issues . After these repairs were done , I’d have to drive down with my wife ( 5 hours) and pick up my car . By the end , Porsche transported my car back to me to avoid the hassle of us picking it up . Im happy to report that the .2 has not had a single issue and is in my opinion a 15-20 % better car considering improved performance, upgrades to PDK etc . I put it back on the road in 4-6 weeks time !

    The thing I have always liked most about CH reviews is that he not only talks the talk - but he demonstrates his points with exquisite car control that makes other commentators look like armchair experts. I love seeing someone who knows what these cars represent actually driving them in the way I imagine myself being capable of doing, all the while knowing that if I stumped up the coin to buy something like this I'd never get it sideways for fear of writing it off.

    Drove this last month. Trust me boys, once you do, you'll NEVER EVER care that it doesn't have a manual 'box ... the PDK in this thing, I have no words. Even for those of you who've sampled the exemplary units in the 991 Carreras and 991 Turbo models, it's an entirely other level. And that engine...I really have no words what I experienced. You just have to try it and you will understand. I didn't even get to the chassis yet. It literally feels like you're putting on an Ironman suit. Pretty sure Robert Downey Jr. has one of these by now.

    • @aguilpa1
      @aguilpa1 8 років тому +4

      Sorry but a GT3 and really any 911 should be available with a manual. It doesn't matter if most people are to unskilled to drive a stick and choose the PDK, the manual should still be an option and just saying no, it's going to be PDK only is a shot in the foot to Porsche and a slap in the face to the tradition of what a 911 was and the people who have supported them.

    • @raheeb1

      I bought a cayman gts with the manual. It is awesome i love it when theirs no traffic, but in traffic, i hate to admit it, the clutch starts to feel heavy. i drove a dual clutch cayman and it was quick, quicker than a manual but the manual even at slower speeds is more fun than the pdk. the 6 speed gears and clutch are as smooth as butter, the best I've ever used, but the pdk is smooth as silk. that's the difference, so make your choice and live with it. have a good one, mates.

    I can completely agree to this. Sometimes when you drive a manual on a the mountains, it almost feels like a rally stage, with the continuous gear changes and heel and toeing. Some might object to this but I think the PDK transmission gives a more controlled and fluent feel, giving you time to get proper braking and cornering. If you ride sports bikes, you'll know what I'm on about.

    I have a manual 997s and I recently drove the 991s with PDK. I most say that the only thing I liked about the PDK were the downshifts. Changing gears up with the pedals was as boring as you can imagine, almost pointless because they change so quickly that it feels like constant acceleration, rather than the exciting inertia of a manual. Yes, it was quicker than my 997s, but I only noticed because of the numbers on the speedometer and not because I felt it. In my opinion, if you want to feel that you are driving a sport car, get it with manual. If you care about the numbers, then get a PDK.

    About the PDK gear box and manual gear changes: all evolutions in history were met with dislike. I noticed that first with mobile phones (using a mobile phone in public was frowned upon, nobody saw the need for it and look at us now...). I believe the reason PDK-like gear boxes are so controversial is that we are used to using our right (or in the UK/Japan/etc left hand) to shift gears. It feels different and hence weird.
    But what if it is factually better? I mean: nowadays automatic gear boxes actually improve on fuel consumption and they can shift faster than any human being could. We don't double clutch anymore, we left air-cooled engines behind, engines are run by computers now, and so on, and so on...

      The real issue with those who want a manual is that they want the challenge of changing gears themselves. No one who understands the technology would ever claim to be able to operate a manual transmission on par with a PDK or even close, but the challenge of trying has been taken away and that's a shame.

      pete g I have both a manual and a dual-clutch car in my family and you're right, dual-clutch doesn't compare to a real manual in any way. Sure, you may be choosing when the car shifts but you're not involved in the shifting process at all.

    The PDK is a double-clutch auto-manual with no central shifter - that doesn't make it an automatic, in US terms (it doesn't have a slushy torque converter). I don't see why all the fuss, the shifter has moved behind the wheel, plus you get faster double-clutch gear changes. Though in an older car i'd prefer a classic "manual" no doubt.

    • @thaik56
      @thaik56 9 років тому +5

      It doesn't have a manual clutch, it's not a proper manual, end of story. The moment the car starts to assist you be it partially or totally into your shifting, it's an automatic, at least to us, purists.

    • @ricomichel
      @ricomichel 9 років тому

      You're right about the "loss" of a manually operated clutch, but to me this purist stuff is just silly. All race cars (like F1, Le Mans, etc) have paddle-shift, so - whatever. Btw, you can't be a purist and call the PDK an automatic; that's not very serious

    • @thaik56
      @thaik56 9 років тому +9

      Éric Théoret Purist isn't about speed, it's about feeling, driver involvement, and ultimately fun. PDK. DCT and all these are fast and efficient, nowhere nearly as fun, it's just a robot doing the job for you. I drove a F430 and a Gallardo to around 110MPH once, god was it boring without a clutch, even if the car had lots of torque and gave you that kick everytime it shifted (single clutch), it's boring because I wasn't the one doing it. Even if DCT are quicker, more efficient and never make fail to shift properly and quickly no matter how many times if shifts, it's boring because you're not responsible for it. It's as if while you're about to shift, someone comes and along saying: "hey man, let me do it for you, I'll shift quicker than you'll ever be able to do"
      If that dude existed, I'll be saying: "hey man, who cares? I'm the one driving, let me have the fun of doing it"

      sevenseasvoyager Right. My intention was to point out that the PDK (or Ferrari's F1 or VW's DSG…) has nothing to do with what is called an automatic gearbox in the US. You can use it just like a manual gearbox (only it's faster). But you're right that it's not completely manual neither.

    Nah, doesn't need a manual. A GTS? Absolutely. Hell, even the turbo should still have a manual. Those are just fun cars to drive, without the stone cold seriousness of a Porsche race car. But when you develop a car to destroy the track, you can't put a slow, obsolete gearbox in it for the sake of sentiment. If you want that engaging feeling, buy a Porsche that isn't designed to set records, because it's clear you're not designed to either.

      Van Der gaurde I can see why it would, yea this car would be just as fun with the manual, but at that point you're just pissing away money for a cool wing and some fixed back seats. Don't forget, this car is mildly affordable, compared to what it's competing against, so price can become a factor to most 911 buyers, and dropping the extra dime for a GT3 just to have the performance of a GTS doesn't seem sensible to most people.

    • @Still_Strugglin
      @Still_Strugglin 8 років тому

      +SideWays8Productions if you think this has the same performance as a gts, it goes without saying that you have no clue. I work for Porsche, which is meaningless to you I know, but the gt3 is worlds ahead of a gts. I was a manual only guy when I came to the company but the pdk is so amazing that I now prefer it. Don't criticize based on Internet specs.

    • @SideWays8Productions
      @SideWays8Productions 8 років тому

      94nitemare First off I doubt you'd be saying you work for Porsche if you really did. It doesn't take manufacturer employment to learn more about these cars than the average leasing broker who drives these every day can. If we're going by credentials, I'm a sales broker in NYC...just about all of my 911 clients have become close friends of mine and own more than just 991's.
      Second, I never said the GTS had the same performance as the GT3. I was implying that giving the GT3 a manual transmission will tone it down to the GTS's level of performance, because whats the sense in having the extra HP and torque if you're still gunna be lifting off throttle to shift? Even with the cornering advantage the GT3 has over the GTS, you won't be able to use it to it's full potential if you're braking sooner and longer to rev match into a corner. Even if Sport mode rev matches for you on the manual, it'll still take longer to get back on throttle afterwards.
      The GTS is the fine line between the softer base model and the harder GT3's that offers both sharper performance, and a manual transmission. Because like I said before, if you want that engaging feeling, buy a Porsche that isn't designed to set records, because it's clear you're not designed to either.

    • @SideWays8Productions
      @SideWays8Productions 8 років тому

      ***** not necessarily professionals, just people that understand that in order to outperform everyone else and set records and win races (which is what the GT3's are designed to do), you have to sacrifice sentimental aspects like a manual transmission. It doesn't take a professional race car driver to understand that lol

    I hope that 4 wheel steer has an off setting. It would be a shame to spoil the ability to drive like a hooligan and take every curve sideways. Other than that, awesome. I'm glad they made the rear as gorgeous as they did, because that's the view most other similarly-priced cars are going to be seeing when trying to keep up with it on a track day. Something lovely to look at in frustration. And I'm not even a total Porsche fanatic. I'm more of a Mercedes girl.

      Dennis Simons Yeah, upon later research I found that out. I have amassed quite a bit of disposable income to treat myself to a nice machine after 30 years in the aerospace biz, and the new 911 GT3 is definitely in my top 3 right now.
      I especially like the way they made it so that pulling back on both paddles at the same time is like putting the clutch in, and letting go is like dropping the clutch, where on other paddle shift cars as we know, doing so would just put the car into neutral. It's a shame there is no full manual option anymore, but at least a driver has that. And they finally fixed the stick so it behaves like the shifter on a true sequential 'box: Pull back for an upshift and push forward for a downshift.

    • @SondeBeeches
      @SondeBeeches 10 років тому +8

      He's talking about the philosophy of what a gt3 should be and what it should represent. The gt3 is the ultimate expression of the 911 and should be the most exciting and involving. Some of that involvement is lost when you no longer have a manual. Solely having a pdk represents a massive shift in what the gt3 is (which was exclusively manual in its whole history), and he's not sure, as good as the pdk is, if it is right to exclude a manual.

    • @Baerchenization
      @Baerchenization 10 років тому +1

      SondeBeeches Porsche says that 80% of their GT3 customers use the cars on track. And the PDK beat the crap so much out of the manual version during development that they decided not to sell a manual - it just wouldn't be competitive, and it would miss the point of building a fast car, if even Porsche test drivers can't do a competitive lap with a manual GT3. So there, the manual gear box is dead. (personally, I have never driven an automatic even for 100 meters in over 20 years of driving, but I'd want this car with PDK anyway).
      The GT3 is the ultimate expression of performance, not the ultimate stronghold of the manual gear box... some people seem to miss that ;)

    • @SondeBeeches
      @SondeBeeches 10 років тому +4

      Baerchenization True a pdk is faster, I'm not arguing against that, but a manual is more involving. That's one of the points Chris is trying to make in the video. Not everything has to be about ultimate performance.

It almost drives it selves a solves a lot of problems it selves which takes away a bit of the driving experience. On the other hand you can push yourself a lot harder which makes the car a lot harder to drive the minute you loose control over it.

    Seeing more and more car companies give in to the lazy, paddle shifter using pussies makes me nauseous. I hope that there are any companies left that say: "use a proper manual gearbox or fuck off." At some point, it's worth losing money to not let the majority ruin it for the true enthusiasts. At the very least, always offer a proper manual gearbox. There are a ton of advantages to having a clutch; you can push start your car if the battery dies, the theft rate is something like 70% less, you have much more control over the car, and you have a lot less people asking to drive your car.

      its also denying the fact that now the technology is that there are auto systems that shift faster than any human could and paired the right way with everything else its faster and better. Sure I'll admit the human to car interaction is lessened but you cant deny the technology coming out these days. You really think the hypers cars of today would be just as fast if it was a manual gearbox? the acceleration numbers would surely be slower even if its only by split seconds.
