He didnt use to have a lot of money back then, had to sell it to enjoy a variety of other cars. Im sure if he owned it now he wouldnt think of selling it, unless it was worth a ridiculous amount of money.
I've lost count of how many times I've watched this video, each time I grow greener with envy at you having the opportunity to own such a masterpiece of a car. One day hopefully, one day. . .
I could never bring myself to sell one of these. It is however an investment car, and money talks. Granted he would have made more had he hang onto it a little longer, but he certainly wouldn't have lost anything. What Ferrari did he go for again? FF was it? Also, thanks for making this video pop up again, it never gets old!
This rare beauty will appreciate like mad in the next 10-20 years and its the most purest driving experience money can buy. I still cant believe he traded this for a 599. (I don't hate Ferraris)
Still watching this video years later. Honestly probably my favourite piece of automotive journalism. It's just as stunning as the first time I saw it.
This video is immortal. The last 911 with a Stick... It totally beats that video of the old guy with the two F40's who drives them like an old chap. The way Chris drove this car in this video, plus the car itself, is Immortal. Porsche. There is No Substitute.
Schleberger You're missing the point. It's the last manual 911 RS variant-- New RS's will always have PDK. Perez failed to specify the variant but he has a great point.
IMHO, probably the best UA-cam automotive video to date. People will only have to look to this particular video 20, 30, 50 years from now to garner the best understanding of a legendary pure everyday drivers car in the day or circa 2011. Thank you Porsche, thank you Chris.
Watching this video and having seen a few before from Chris Harris, I start more and more to think of him as a poet. A "the pure style of driving in not downsized real cars poet"! Most of us viewers are as much of a car maniac as he is, but the pure NA engine fascination, he really did express it with this video - without banging the car constantly to the rev limiter! Great job, very great job! I like this guy and his videos only because he can be so fascinated by any car that might hit the right button in him!
This vídeo 5 years ago made me realize that I needed to sell my 997 carrera 2S before depreciation was too bad. I wanted a GT3 so bad, and luckily was able to get my hands on a Cayman GT4 brand new, but still to this day (still own the GT4) I want a 997.2 GT3 or GT3RS they are so special, of course a 4.0 liter RS is simply unreachable.
John Gagnon Yeah, and 20-30 years from now we're gonna look back at this nostalgic piece of engineering like we do with the 959 or F40... true classic.
Charles Perez I'm guessing he was leasing it for a sizeable amount of money. In another video, he mentions that he sells the Porsche so he can lease a Ferrari. Also I think the insurance in the UK is crazy.
the sequence starting at 5:29 - the car wash. Nice. Then a slow motion drift with serious quality of image....that is some fantastic shit. Good job Chris.
I do respect your opinion on cars, Chris, and I understand that Variety is the Spice of Life, but I think you'll come to regret selling this. Stone Cold Classic.
I guess he had not bought them, because he had a one years test car - now the car is back to Porsche, refurbisht and sold as used car or part of their race driver program. You can rent a 911 GT3 as pure race car. But you have to realy drive races with them. Porsche offers you the car and the maintaince and spare parts. But tthsi service is not cheap - but if you find some advertising partner, it can be payable to drive at the Porsche cup, etc.
Drive team - you guys have truly NAILED the auto media segment. I've been a fan of your past content through it's various forms, but the pieces for the Drive channel have been phenomenal! The shots, the editing, the commentary, the music - everything is near perfect and is a pleasure to consume. Please keep up the good work! I will continue to spread the good word of your efforts to other fellow enthusiasts.
+The Jkghfg He has money he has a Ferrari and he tried to by a new GT 3 RS but he couldn't get one. And he's not paying the mark up they put on a used one. Well used with 15 miles on it but they still want 389 to 398 grand and the car went for 189 grand from the dealer but he couldn't get one from a dealer they were all sold out..
There's not so much talking in this, but when there is, it's meaningful. That's why I enjoy this series. I love Top Gear, but when I need to relax, I watch this. This truly captures the quiet intensity within the cars.
Looking at past Porsche's and their tendency to appreciate many times their initial cost decades later I would dispute that statement. This car will be worth more than what it was brand new in 20 years - that's a given.
A. Shaw they were made in limited edition of 600 cars. Once the PDK floods the market, this will become a collectible. Manual Ferrari 599s are already gaining in price.
Really love this video. You can tell from Chris's genuine presentation style and emotions evident on the face what this car is. Love those slow motion drifting shots too underlined with the ethereal music. Maybe a bit passe in 2016 but the emotion still holds true
such an incredible car. no other gt3 will ever be as pure and as raw as this one. Chris you were very lucky to own one. I bet you still regret selling it
I have never seen a video that get's across my love of cars in such a cinematic way! A car should be a pantomime! Loud, beautiful and entertaining! It doesn't have to be fast, I just has to make me happy and fell like I'm a child again!
This whole winter storage thing people do with nice sports cars is so foreign to me. I mean I get it but living In Southern California it's always sunny and nice 😊😋
Chris - kudos for putting it in a showroom. One of the only ways people like me can appreciate this machine. I saw one in a showroom in London Ontario (Canada) and it was one of 2 in the entire country. I'm talking a city with a population of about 400,000... it was a big deal. It deeply impacted me being able to see this thing in the flesh. Europeans are a lucky bunch when it comes to the cars that roam their streets.
Chris Harris manages to make me watch every video more then once and make every car sound awesome despite it's flaws where as Matt Farah manages to draw me in and then piss me off. Chris captures the magic that is in cars and that makes him great.
me either. better car, better engine and not to mention stick shift is better than paddle shifters any day. Analog over digital for me.There is just more driver involvement that way especially on a car like that.
Because he couldn't keep up the monthly repayments for long. He said this himself. He got the 599 as it was 40 grand cheaper and the best supercar he could get for the price.
This video have the best camera angles/views/shoots EVER in hole of human history... EVER!!! Not only on YT, but on TV as well...best camera work & edit ever! My fav is 4:07! If you don't, would be very great to make that as wallpaper, please! Greatest review thing you've show us, Chris!
+Blake Felice OK guys I guess I haven't seen them all. All I meant was, the few I have seen he's kicking it out eating up tires making them less and less effective and killing lap time but I guess I'll be quiet. Happy New Year folks!!!
This is such an awesome video. Hope it gets featured, hope EVERYONE including non car fans gets a chance to see it, i hope by the end of the year it has at least 100,000 views. This channel is 10 times what Fast Lane Daily was, thanks to Chris Harris and Matt Farah and Leo and Alex Roy all collaborating together to make one awesome car enthusiast channel. This is truly great stuff guys, keep it up.
That must've been one of the best hosted, filmed and produced pieces that I have ever seen on UA-cam! May I even say better than what the last couple of series of Top Gear have offered.
This beautiful car in this gorgeous landscape! And the showroom comment, what did I expect? Well I guess something more serious but this ... this is awesome.
In my opinion this has to be the greatest 911 ever just on the engine alone. I would love to drive that car just to feel what that N/A 4 liter engine with that output feels like. Not a huge fan of Porsche but God that engine. Chris, perfect choice man.
Still amazing to watch 10 years on..
Same here, end of august 2023,
12 years on
Same here I was 20 when I first seen this now I’m gonna turn 32😊
still cant believe he sold this thing. I feel like there is no better car for him. this car is the best representation of all chris wants in a car
Yeah I can't understand it either.
He didnt use to have a lot of money back then, had to sell it to enjoy a variety of other cars. Im sure if he owned it now he wouldnt think of selling it, unless it was worth a ridiculous amount of money.
@@LoL0assasinspeet well they do go for something like 400-500k these days..
Yeah, I think that Mark Webber told him he was a loon for selling it.
Mr.BigBoss7 where do you get these numbers from ? You can buy a very good manual gt3 rs for under 180k
That drift @5:59 is poetry. Beautiful video, I come back and watch it once a year. 997.2 is my dream car.
Still watching for the millionth time in 2019
And now in 2020 brother
@@tannermerrill amen brother
Agree almost 2021
...and 2020 December
September 2021, can’t get enough of it.
This video really stood the test of time. A phenomenal work of art. May this never be forgotten.
I've lost count of how many times I've watched this video, each time I grow greener with envy at you having the opportunity to own such a masterpiece of a car. One day hopefully, one day. . .
right? I've watched it countless time, too.
Barry # Chris sold one to get a Ferrari. Big mistake in my point of view. This Porsche is gorgeous and sounds perfect.... master piece.
It was a 599. I also would never sell this car, it's my favorite ever. But he had his reasons.
Get the new 991.2 gt3! Not quite the same, and not cheap, but 500 hp 4.0 that does 9k rpm and a manual! Much more reasonable
the 997 gt3rs 4.0 is absolute automotive royalty, as is Chris Harris for that matter.
This rare beauty will appreciate like mad in the next 10-20 years and its the most purest driving experience money can buy. I still cant believe he traded this for a 599. (I don't hate Ferraris)
I don't think he had a choice. It was just a little too expensive for him to handle.
SondeBeeches And the 599 is cheaper to maintain??? (I'm not being ironic, just wondering)
Definitely not, it's probably more expensive than the porsche. I think he got rid of his 599 too.
pancon5 Most likely most expensive to maintain, but cheaper to buy in.
Whats more JDM Toyota or Nissan agreed 100%
Amazing! Love Chris Harris and the cinematography is epic! Really excellent job guys! This one is going in my favorites!
Still watching this video years later. Honestly probably my favourite piece of automotive journalism. It's just as stunning as the first time I saw it.
Here for the yearly rerun, every time it starts to get cold I just can’t stop thinking of this video.
This is one of my fave movies on youtube all the time, love the atmosphere and this music... love my GT3Rs4.0... love you Porsche.. and thank u Chris!
Because you got a 4.0...
hahaha and what about your porsche 918? :P
***** Yeah, because someone who owned a 4.0 would never think to watch videos of them on UA-cam.....
Still one of the best car videos ever made. I watch it about once a year.
12 years on and still a fantastic video.
Clean low mileage 4.0 cars now close to half a million 😳
This video is immortal. The last 911 with a Stick... It totally beats that video of the old guy with the two F40's who drives them like an old chap. The way Chris drove this car in this video, plus the car itself, is Immortal. Porsche. There is No Substitute.

Would rather have this than the new 991 GT3. Guaranteed to be a collector in the future, even with miles on it.
I think it is already a collector car, haven't prices shot up to the $300k range?
John Gagnon Yeah, and 20-30 years from now we're gonna look back at this nostalgic piece of engineering like we do with the 959 or F40... true classic.
John Gagnon yes.. there's 2 on ebay for $330k and $360k
this was the highest performing production gt3 that was still made with a manual transmission iirc?
TickleMeShlomo lol
How could you possibly ever sell this car??? That is just above and beyond me
That was a car that your Son might inherit... If he deserved it. A car to pound your chest on. A car to drive - every day. I would have never sold it.
Charles Perez I'm guessing he was leasing it for a sizeable amount of money. In another video, he mentions that he sells the Porsche so he can lease a Ferrari. Also I think the insurance in the UK is crazy.
Kind of hard to keep a car you can't afford, chief.
He didn't sell it because he didn't like it.
Charles Perez You wouldn't have a choice if you couldn't keep up with the payments and couldn't afford to pay for a car like this in cash.
***** Thats ridiculous. I bitch and moan because I have to pay $1500 Australian dollars annually.
Still one of my favorite videos on the entire internet

the sequence starting at 5:29 - the car wash. Nice. Then a slow motion drift with serious quality of image....that is some fantastic shit. Good job Chris.
I feel really sad watching this. RIP Hans Mezger

I do respect your opinion on cars, Chris, and I understand that Variety is the Spice of Life, but I think you'll come to regret selling this. Stone Cold Classic.
Chris Harris, being able to capture the essence of driving since 19xx. Thank you!
I hope he uses this Top Gear Money to buy this weapon back! What a mistake to sell!!
What a video...
This is true motoring journalism!
Well shot, well edited, music well scored, and BRILLIANT narration/review/overview by Chris Harris!
You should have kept your 4.0 RS Chris, even the high mileage cars are going for 300,000£+ at the moment while they were only 130,000 new.
Remind him again. I'm sure he hasn't that for at least.. oh, say.. a whole 2 minutes? What do you think?
Nue Gai He sold the 4.0 RS and bought a 599 GTB... That's the worst swap ever.

Last gen of the manual GT Porsche, good investment
Should never call a car an investment.
I know what you're saying. But fundamentally, it's a car meant to be driven, not a piece of art waiting to appreciate.
A. Shaw Get over it, anything you can buy then sell can technically be considered an investment. Cars just happen to be an investment that we enjoy.
Came back to watch it one more time...still the best automotive video on youtube. Pure art.
this is Chris Harris personal gt3
