George I love your videos id just like to say I have a 520d bmw and your videos have been amazing I just cleaned my intake manifold and would not of been able to do it without your videos, keep up the good work I’ve also followed many other videos of yours for my car so cheers.
Great video. I'm glad the crush washer and o-ring didn't fix it. So often our first (or second or third) attempt at a fix doesn't work so it is good to se someone else have to persevere and keep at it until they find the fix. That's reality. Thanks.
I held my breath and crossed my fingers mate. From experience when things goes wrong with these motor you are looking at bank breaking sums in comparison to BMs. Well done.
Cleaning the tensioner could definitely fix a rattle on cold start George. I had the same issue on a motorbike a few years ago. It was much quieter and also it was more responsive and more power. It really made that much difference, probably due to the better efficiency of the valves.
Interesting find! I’d never have suspected a rusted through tensioner. I have a 911 of a similar vintage which has a very minor leak from one of the tensioners. I’d always assumed was it just the sealing washer but I’ll check the tensioner itself too! One day…. 😅
The spring inside these type of tensioner get weak with age. You could have replaced the tensioner while you were in there. Alternatively you can add a thin washer or coin at the end of the spring to increase tension on the chain. This may cure the start up rattle. Worked for me on an E39 a few years back. You may have more than one tensioner on that particular engine. I'm not familiar with Porsche engines.
Im going through all the Boxster vids again now that ive got an interest in buying one. Im subscribed to ur channel as i have a F22, BMW ! Whilst u were under the engine did u notice the starter motor ? Will it be easy to change ?
Great result with the timing tensioner George. Shame it wasn't a seal but you can't win them all and you know the tensioner won't need doing now. What's the plan for the rear window? Are you leaving the bumpers as they are with the towing straps?
@@GeorgeAusters Good man. I wonder if you can upgrade to the glass window. I think the later 986 boxsters had glass. I've got a 987 that has a glass window but not sure if they're backwards compatible.
I have owned several Boxsters and some rattled on start up and some didn’t. As long as it is only there for a second no problem. A lot of these cars do not get regular use and the thin oil used these days drains away from components. My tip if you want to avoid the rattle is to turn ignition key over a few times without firing up the engine. By doing this you are allowing oil to circulate prior to the stress of the engine starting.
Porsche's are weird pricing parts. When I had a 993 on a 95 plate in 2000, I found that out. Beru spark plugs.. £100, I paid £30 for the exact plugs at a local motor parts shop. While a new badge for the front cost £25. Servicing was cheap as the car was 5 years old. I never paid over £200 for virtually anything on the car.
@@GeorgeAusters ah - the mysteries of UA-cam explained! Great vid. I'm thinking of moving from a very well sorted MX5 NB to a Boxster, so I'm watching with interest.

The washers themselves are common for corroding but well worth checking the tensioner itself too!
Can't wait for the garage to be ready!!
A lot of saving needed!
Great fix George 🤩👍🏻
Cheers Richard!
Simple yet satisfying repair.
@@christos881 Thanks Chris, I agree.. Hopefully get it on the road soon💪🏼
What a pain but you got it sorted. Calipers look good too.

Well done mate, tensioner, no tension causing rattle, fixed no rattle.

@@seanpaul3050 Did you watch the whole video? I did replace the tensioner😅
@@GeorgeAusters I thought you just replaced the washer and O-ring. Anyway, I see there are at least two of these tensioners on that particular engine.
There are 3 tensioners on this engine
@@GeorgeAusters correct
😂
Well done great work😊
Thanks mate
George I can tell that I can hear timing chains rattling around engine block so please have a look to it
Hi George, is there an equivalent realOEM for Porsche? Is there a source that you can use to get part numbers? Thanks

I didn’t actually take note of the starter position unfortunately!
I've just checked now on youtube, a few guys doing it, and it seems to be accessed from above under throttle body, easy enough job
Good video, George 😊
Thanks mate!
One of those heart-stopping moments when the first "fix" didn't fix it! At least it didn't blow the whole budget.
Yeah I was like WTF

Exactly that! I want to get the rear window replaced and will likely be removing the towing straps👍🏻
@@GeorgeAusters Good man. I wonder if you can upgrade to the glass window. I think the later 986 boxsters had glass. I've got a 987 that has a glass window but not sure if they're backwards compatible.
@@kins888 The glass windows are much smaller so would require a whole roof replacement
Well done George 👍 How did you get the porsche logo so shiny and bright white on the painted calipers? Or is it a sticker?
It’s a vinyl sticker👍🏻

That’s weight saving for your tensioner head should be solid piece 😃
Porsche quality💪🏼
How did you get the white Porsche name back onto the calipers? Can you buy a decal for that?
Yes it’s a decal
@@GeorgeAusters Thanks. The calipers look brand new. Good job.
Glad the swap workwd! Was the rattle ar cold start also resolved?
Still seems to be a slight rattle but apparently it’s normal so I’m not worried about it

I’ve seen a few companies online but none are keen to record a video together unfortunately

How do we join the competition to win Teq Pro kit? I have exactly same issue with my callipers on my Boxster

How did you paint the calipers without losing the Porsche Logos in white? Did I miss a trick here?😉

didn't you do an oil & filter change last week?
Yes I did that at the same time👍🏻

Shouldn’t have painted the caliper mounting surfaces. It’s going to be ever so slightly crooked with paint on it
I was never going to mount them with the mating surface painted lol, I cleaned them off👍🏻
Jesus George moved on a bit from the cooper S engine build LOL
Yup!
Why would you even think about painting the calipers which looked ok before, while trying to fix an oil leak?
I did the callipers after fixing the oil leak don’t worry👍🏻

Oil fed pressure tensioner that’s why it had no tension
Yep, makes sense!
Bet its not game over. It wasnt last time 😂

Don't paint the mating surface of the calipers....
Much easier to paint it and then remove the paint afterwards👍🏻
