You need a Patreon, get paid for this high quality instruction. You can still use UA-cam but I would pay for live q&a’s, early access, discord community perhaps critiques and narrated process vids that show start to finish stuff.
Just finished listening and watching ALL of your videos (while drawing of course), I've been lost for while on where I should be going with my art but going through your channel I've decided to try making a comic and seeing what happens next. there is fear, there is anxiety but i'm sure it's better than not having a goal at all. So thank you Tim for everything you've done for this channel.
How is your comic going? Did you persevere on it?
I'm going through the same thing right now. I just started working on mine, I'm working on the first few pages right now. It really pushes me out of my comfort zone, especially for backgrounds, but I'm learning so much.
@@estherbjerga523 Sorry for the late response, I just saw you comment. thank you for asking!
So far I've drawn over 50 pages. my first comic was 12 pages long. It was ok as I've learned the basics of making comics from it. despite how "bad" it looks I'm glad I did it. Its called 'Roving girl' you can read it online on the website 'Manga Plus Creators'.
I've also drawn a 40 page one shot for a local magazine competition, this one I'm honestly very proud of since it really pushed me to the edge with its deadline and all, and I've learned so much from it. I'm allowed to publish after they announce the results which should be anytime around this or next month.
Right now, I'm planning a 16 page one shot for the 'Silent Manga Audition'. This one is going to be very tough since I have to tell a complete story without using any speech bubbles, a pure test of artistic skills and visual story telling.
@@scriptyshake Good luck!! You'll face many challenges but it's worth it trust me! there is a very rewarding feeling once you're done with a page. it's hard to explain, but i'm very addicted to it, I sure hope you well be too.
@@RakanMaghey, I just wanted to say that I checked out your manga on Manga Plus Creators "Roving girl" and honestly, wow, I aspire to draw as good as you, its amazing, I know you said you aren't that happy with the result, as it was your first comic, but holy, its amazing, and if that's your start, you'll do incredible in the future, keep it up!
Didn't expect a David Finch mention. He's definitely a great artist in terms of compositing shots with light and shadow. Great video!
Couldn't agree more!
Your videos are EXTREMELY helpful! Keep it up!
23:50 wow. Wow. Love this work
Another great video my dude!
G'day Tim. Great video. I feel like I have a pretty good process for drawing my backgrounds in comics. I can pencil a page with detailed backgrounds in a couple of days. For me that strikes a balance between quality and speed. Where I start to struggle is when it comes to adding colour. My first page blew out to a full week of painting and I'm still not happy with the results. I hope this is something you'll cover in a future video.
Very interesting. This content helps me. Thanks.
Just started this series and I'm excited to see where it goes.
I'm so excited for this series of videos! backgrounds are definitely something that overwhelms me, so it was great to see the different examples you showed and how the level of complexity adapts according to the role they play in the piece! Thank you very much for sharing these videos, I hope you are doing well!
Tim, this vídeos are amazing, thanks a lot.
Thanks!!
Whenever I think of backgrounds, Blame! by Tsutomu Nihei always comes to mind. There are often long stretches of a character just moving through the very detailed environment with little to no dialogue.
Definitely one of my favourite manga of all time. The method of storytelling isn't for everyone, but I highly recommend it anyway.
In french comics the Artist is the first credit the scénariste, the "writer" comes second. ;)
Indeed!
You sir are doing GOD's work and Scientific facts in display here both at the same time. Thank you!!!!
Thank you!!
Yeah!!!! The series I’ve been looking forward the most is now here!
Great video! The thought process aspect of it could be the first or the last topic in a series like that, but I do think thst it makes much more sense to make it the first one. Thank you for not only giving us what would give more views (“Hot to draw X” videos) but what would make us go the farthest.
Maybe you could introduce a similar thought process video on yiur other ongoing series at the end, like the Anatomy Drawing series.
AFAIK UA-cam creators can also change the thumbnail of their already posted videos, so you could use that to number the videos in the series and make it easier for people to follow each one.
I’m the one that always bothers you for a rock drawing video, so that is one of my suggestions again, rock texture is far from obvious and making rocks different when there are very different scales of it in the same image is always a big challenge for me.
You could also touch on how to draw VXF, like water, splashes, rain, explosions, mist, clouds, wind etc. That might me a video series of it’s own, but I think this is even more overlooked in Art Teaching than backgrounds themselves.
I’m looking forward to this series, I was missing a new video already! You got me hooked to learning and improving! Thank you so much!
nice class, bg is like a bass in music. thanks for the video, greetings from brasil
For another good manga example, Asano Inios work (particularly Dead Dead Demons DeDeDeDestruction) has some amazing backgrounds. Hes said in interviews that the backgrounds and establishing a strong sense of place are crucial to him developing the story.
Great video again. Wondering if you can include some later bleach manga panels and show why the LACK of backgrounds later on work so well with the character expression, thanks.
Great ideas! Thanks!!
Hello teacher!!! Greetings from Mexico; I would like to ask you about the possibility of making a video, talking about some route to learn comics or manga in a traditional way. Since it is an ambition that I have proposed for a long time, but my improvement path has been slow and bumpy. Doing a lot of drawing from life... a lot of fundamentals that don't integrate quite well... I would just like to know your advice about which path and rhythms to follow. I would be infinitely grateful. Thanks for your content.
This is really helpful. I am going to order some of those comics featured in the vid
Awesome! Thanks Ibrahem!! Glad this one was useful
Hi Codex..look forward to this series of lessons. Always hated buying a comic with to many one color backgrounds, made the characters look like they're standing against a painted wall. Hay,on your home page there's a section that says more about this channel? It's empty, you have alot to offer people maybe say something to welcome/spark curiosity, add more than just a colored wall to their mind.. I do (Slot'zzzz)to that's my slot car channel,my(Art What?) channel is weak,ha. So don't be confused it's(that guy)
Hey, do you ever plan on putting your tutorials in book form!! I really appreciate your content🎉🎉
take a shot every time Tim says "again" XD. Sorry, jk, excited abut this series!
I remember hearing this in one of his vids and I can't stop hearing it. It ruined them for me 😅

Sorry I'm kinda new to your channel so there's one thing I can't quite wrap my head around ... .Why is that comic book in French ? xD
He works for the franco-belgian comic market.
There are maily 3 large markets for comics: USA, Europe (mainly french speaking) and Asian (mainly Japan). Each one has very particular audiences and with that comes different needs, possibilities and time per page turnarounds and even though he's australian, he has felt that the french speaking market was the best fit for him.
He has another youtube channel where he daos more podcasty videos and there is one where he talks about his journey. It's called: "E9: How Long It Took Me To 'Get Good' As A Professional Comic Book Artist." You might want to listen to that to get a better understanding.
The most difficult background I have to do are forest, I get the citys enviroment, easy... dont know why.. hehehehe.
Haha yeah, it’s all about what we are comfortable with.
I ❤ your voice, if I had your number I would never not call you.
lol :)
