'The Brawn GP story wasn't a fairytale' - F1 debate
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 бер 2019
- It's been a decade since Brawn GP rose from the ashes of Honda and started its remarkable journey towards a Formula 1 world championship double, with Jenson Button taking the drivers' title and the team in Ross Brawn's name fending off the traditional giants on the grid. But was it really David slaying Goliath, as it is often remembered? Stuart Codling presents his argument that the Brawn BGP 001 was the result of hundreds of millions of dollars of development while the team was still Honda in 2008, and the fact it only narrowly won the '09 title isn't as impressive. Edd Straw counters that the human side of the story and how close the entire team came to closing cannot be overlooked. Who is right? You decide.

Then last two minutes summed it up perfectly. Nobody outside Brawn believed it was possible...
Brawn achieved the impossible. BGP-001 is quite possibly the greatest F1 chassis ever created.
"Oi mate that qualifying....let's put up an irrelevant video to distract people from recalling what we said about Merc and Ferrari."
Loooooool
Embarrassing to have these guys still sitting there. What do they actually know more than 80 percent of knowledgeable fans?
I'll be surprised if all of those videos hyping Ferrari up are not *deleted* by lunch time. 😂
"Don't be fooled by Mercedes' sudden turn of pace" they said. lol
I came straight here to the comments section expecting your well delivered shade sir. They earned it.
RIP to your 'predictions'
So true lmao
Erm... Considering the engine and gearbox it was designed around was missing, and the Mercedes one was wedged in there, then yes it was a miracle
similarly sized engines don't require any miracles for installation.
@@stevev6002 the chassis and bodywork weren't designed around it like everyone else's car, and lets not forget the lack of in season development because there was no money to, and luck, played a role
@Joel Schembri Yes the Merc was the engine of the field, but the car was designed around a different engine. It meant that the weight distribution wasn't quite right. Had that chassis been designed around the Merc engine it would've been faster still.
Brawn inherited a great car that cost a lot of money but they did not have the funds to develop it during the season.
The others caught up in the end but just a bit too late...
khasmir666 exactly.
Even Christian Horner himself said it best. Red Bull and Sebastian had a chance to catch them but they ran out of races
I wonder if Autosport ever read their comment sections.
Do they hell
Brendan I wonder also.
I wonder if Autosprout will still be in existance in 5 years time. Yes they get some exclusive content sometimes, but 90% of their “news” can be found at motorsport.com, crash.net etc for free. Not worth paying the money for anymore, shame really as i remember the good old days when the magazine was something i looked forward to buying each week. Oh well, times change.

Because it wasnt. They bought a £300million+ car for £1
@@andrewsimmons323 £300m car for a pound now that's a fairytale

It was a fairytale simple as that. Jenson & Rubens were only weeks away from being unemployed & without a drive. It was a miracle Brawn got that team running with that Merc v8 shoehorned in the back.
I still remember watching testing & they were 2 seconds quicker than anyone. How can you say it wasn't a fairytale success?
Lol and how much were mclaren, ferrari, williams etc investing?.... no one expected this yet here are these clowns now talking it down.
Can my mum work at Autosport please, she knows nothing about F1 too so she'd fit right in.

I knew a mechanic from the team, as far as he was concerned the team was done and never expected to be on the grid! The guy was in tears when talking about the situation as it was his lively hood. They were confident about the car but never in their wildest dreams did they think it would actually win races let alone dominate at the start.
Ive never heard of this huge amount of money before....no different to the other top teams so i cant get my head round this video! After the ferrari arse licking and now this i may just tune in for the comical factor.
Autosport is that kid who reminds the teacher that the homework was due in today when they forgot about it.
It was an underdog story, they had last minute call ups a tenth of the budget, no development across the season. If it wasnt as fast at the start it would have been 'just another runner'...
underdogs with a major advantage all season. a superior car developed by honda.
@@stevev6002 major advantage that other teams also thought of with the double diffuser eg Williams and Toyota and others didn’t think was legal.
I think a company that makes hair dryers winning the world championship IS a fairytale in my book
You mean Braun, not Brawn 😉

All that we remember is that Ross Brawn came back from a sabbatical and helped Jenson Button to win his only world 🌎 championship.
And, as far as I'm concerned, the Brawn interlude has to continue to be the greatest story in all sports!
Where is Hollywood, or even the local movie 🎥 companies!
We like Brawn... We like Button... What we don't like, is Autosport gassing about Ferrari and down playing Mercedes. -_-.

0.7 Seconds back? what a great start to the season, right?
Bahrain is where the real season starts for Ferrari 😅 hopefully 🤐
Frankster I really hope so! Honestly I am tired of this! "Ferrari is 0.5 seconds ahead of us!"
This season is F1 last chance! 2021 cars do not look really great in my opinion!
They changed the rules to improve overtaking but the commentators constantly say "Melbourne is a track where overtaking is difficult."
First step was it to improve the cars ability to follow each other more closely. The second step should be to improve the race tracks.
PD Racing TV Last year they had a huge gap in quali aswell, we can wait until to bahrain to see their real potential.
Rainer You are right. But it is quite devastating, don't you think so? But yeah, let's keep our hopes up high! Points are being earned tomorrow 💪
Bryce Peters Why would you call him like that? Honestly it is a bit ridiculous. Sure you may think that, Mercedes will win both titles by Austin and that they are the only real team but there is no need to call @Rainer those names! We all love and resepct the sport! That is it what connects us! So let's be respect full and enjoy the season!
After banging on & ON about Ferrari all throughout winter testing and even wearing us out with a last minute video yesterday called "Ferrari is Holding something Back" you have nothing to say after this afternoons HAMMERTIME in today's qualifying?
So wrong with your expert 'knowitallisim' lets go back ten years to this... #change the story
Those 2 idiots thi k they can change f1 history with their bullshit theorys 😂
Q3 just ended and apparently Ferrari is still sandbagging these commentators are jokes all winter testing trying to convince us Ferrari was faster
@Руслан dude if I was you I would be asking for lotto number but it too late now ✌
ferrari didnt unleash its true powers remember 2018 the ferraris were 7 to 8 tenths behind on hamilton pole and boom won the race so idk they should be saying that
To be fair, Merc's miraculous pace could be track specific, very much like last year. Melbourne is just one of those tracks.
@@gigasigma8373 you sound delusional
@@Bananektdu and you sound that you never watched f1 like ever i watched f1 for 10+ years so you are the delusional one
I bet Mercedes laughing at your videos after that quali
Rizki Adriansyah Last year it was exactly the same. Wait until a usual race track
@@rainys8223 Wait until what? Mercedes beat them by only 4 tenths instead of 8? You guys are so delusional. Every team except Mercedes doesnt deserve to be in F1.
@@rainys8223 C'mon mercedes won both world titles last year. They struggled with tyres last season that isn't going to happen this year.
Gtfo of this sport fucking fangirls. This community is trash.
Bryce Peters Dude what I wrote was a fact, it was exacty the same and after australia it was a close fight. Vettel botteled the whole season, that‘s why they won both WC.
Why you talking shit it was an amazing car a and miracle that they won
wasn't the Brawn without a KERS while the other teams had time to develop and run KERS? it shows how huge the aero advantage must have been with Brawn
Why not even mentioning Rubens? His F1 career was over, at the end 2008. Bruno Senna was going to replace him. Then, suddenly, Honda pulls the plug and Brawn calls him. They need an experienced driver, one that can help to develop the car and get points consistently. Rubens goes back to F1 and wins two races, being one in Monza. That's an interesting part of the story too.
Danilo Albergaria he won both his races the second half of the year, after no development. Don’t know what happened to him in the first half of that year, I ranked Rubinho higher than Jensen, but when it counted he was the one the came 2nd.
Rubens is one of the best drivers to never win a Championship.
No matter what some people say about the car development,so many people who didnt have a job a few weeks ago, competing against red bull, which had a bigger budget and much more stable team, coming together and winning the first race of the year,Constructors and Drivers Championship is an amazing fairytale.
I know the whole Brawn story and I still love it; it doesn't have to be impossible to be lovable. It was still among one of the most unlikely and wonderful things that has ever happened in F1. Ross Brawn didn't walk on water, the Brawn BGP 001 wasn't shaken out of a cereal box, but the whole team and car and project could've so easily died in administration, or come back in a form that didn't operate to the level to take the title. I also feel it was the heart of Button's prime, his peak as it were, and he did sublime things in the car that were great to watch. I will always remember the Monaco 2009 qualifying lap as being quintessentially smooth and fast.
but your predictions were a fairytale
the little guy looks like he could actually sit completely inside body of the big guy
Blackstone Daze ther were actually three guys originally on that sofa and the big guy ate one.
If you want accurate predictions just go for the opposite of everything these guys say.
Again. You guys are absolute nut jobs. What happened to Ferrari?? Posting such a random story. Ofcourse it's a fairytale. They had a last minute setup and no progress throughout the season. Still they took both championships. It's something that might never happen again and guys just wanna run it over.
Shailesh G K He complains about the sense of making the video now, at the season start, just to get rid of the fact that their bold predictions were all completely wrong.
All I can say is I hope this type of “surprise” remains always possible in F1, I love the ingenuity of design.
People always talk about the double diffuser but that wasn't the cars only trick.
The Brawn's front wing was also very well developed. It had far more winglets and other parts to take advantage of the new Y250 vortex than it's contemporaries. Y250 becoming the name of the game in aero for the next decade.
As for the diffuser Newey mentions in his autobiography that they knew about that loophole since the 90s but 2009 was the first time anyone tried it, because they all rightly assumed that if they had tried it years earlier it would have been banned immediately.
It was a political shtick on Mosley's part to allow the Double Diffuser because it pissed off McLaren and Ferrari and was causing such a great shake up of the grid.
One of the counters to Brawn's car was product of lots of money and only possible bc. Honda was so far down in 2008 is: well Red Bull also got there by spending effort and money for 2009, didn't they?
the Monologue by Edd Straw in the end is pure gold. It wasn't a fairy tale but the human story is astonishing
Fun (only) question for Autosport,. which 1). Car. 2). Livery 3). Driver and 4). Team would you put together for the best looking, fastest, most point-scoring F1 team's car and driver set-up?
I'd put the 2007 McLaren chassis/car, with the Brawn GP 2009 livery, with Ayrton Senna or Gilles Villeneuve in the seat in the 1988 McLaren team.
Just for fun. :)
Did the ferrari drivers do a le mans start before qualifying, because the autosport experts said their car was easily the fastest
The most crucial thing was Ferrari, BMW, Renault and McLaren focusing on KERS too
"FERRARI ARE HALF A SECOND AHEAD" lol no one seems to know what their talking about
The front wing video just "this creates vorticies to create outwash" on everything
FullOilBarrel I think they know what they‘re talking about, but predicting a teams pace in pre season is like lottery. Most likely merc won‘t be 0,7 sec ahead the whole season, cuz last years australia quali they also were 0,65 sec away 🤷♂️
The point of the front wing is to lead the air in the best possible way around the car. How you shape it extremely dictates your speed and cornering ability. This season has been heavily focused on the balance of downforce and drag aswell as tire degradation management (separate issue). Ferrari's car followed a different downforce philosophy (low downforce and low drag) and suffered thru major reliability issues throughout the season so far. Mercedes opted for a more balanced approach with an arguably more reliable car. Should they have won so many races? No, but they did. As outsiders we don't see the truth, just our own interpretation. Ferrari are not where they are supposed to be and we can only speculate as to why.
You guys don't know what you're talking about
Hey it seems your Ferrari fanboys analysis failed, better luck next time.
Mercedes 💪
well atleast ferrari has better fanboys then freaking fanpussys mercedes has
@@gigasigma8373 wow you showed them how mature your are
Wakanda Foreva good job showing how mature you are 😂
As I recall, Brawn found a major loophole in the rules and the rest of the teams could not redesign their cars to incorporate it.
laser158689 double diffuser...the other teams tried to copy it then it was banned
The Double Defuser bearing Brawn was a badged SA09 adjusted for a Merc engine. The Honda chassis was dumped.
I love how the first guy is basically like, "well, I should probably try and offer some sort of counter point?" So he opens with a negative. Then, for the rest of the interview, he proceeds to just heap praise on the story ;)
What's with this video? Where're your guys in Australia telling us how Ferrari are way ahead of the field and Mercedes have it all to do?
I agree with my fellow big man, BUT, I DO believe something like this will happen in F1 again! Maybe not the car but a driver taking an underdog team to the title! Schumacher did it with Benetton twice let's not forget!
That guy is at the peak of human physical fitness
What a beast.......
and don't forget a truly amazing driver in Jenson Button !!!
Yes make a completely unrelated video , to what is happening in F1 right now , just as the season started make a video about a car from the past , don't comment about the fact that u busted our balls about Ferrari which ended up being 0.7 behind Hamilton in qualifying although u kept saying otherwise.
Very baffled at the timing of this type of video being released.
Fairy tail all day long. I mean look at the cast: The Boss of F1 Bosses (Mr Brawn), The unlucky English gent who had the skill but never the car (Mr Button) and who can forget the nearly man, F1 Legend (Mr Barrichello)
The teams winter melt down and then rise back to the front of the grid. The backstage war of the teams. This season has it all and will be talked about for as long as we still have F1 in the world.
I'd like to know more about the Mercedes involvement in all this, because at the time their ties to McLaren were almost as a factory team.
Mercedes did own about 20% of McLaren
What would you give to have another Brawn type story unfold in 2019 in lieu of another Mercedes WCC?
I just don't like how people say the team didn't exist until weeks before the season. It absolutely already existed. The argument that it was 'a team with nothing' is so wrong, when in fact the team started with everything and is the reason they won. They didn't have the money to develop the car over the season etc, but they started with such an advantage they didn't need to. The only thing truly interesting to me about this story is the seemingly easy championship win that Honda could of had.
This is the Leicester City Epl win for formula 1
AUTOSPORT is holding something back.
Need an engineering story on that couch.
sick of these commercials every 2 minutes..
What a great way to piss on the chips lads, it was great watching brawn and button that season and then you play it down classy.
So one guy says they spent 300mil on dev and r&d … Ferrari, McLaren, Renault,Toyota all spent even more on that season.. Mostlikely Red Bull as well. And you talk down the Honda to Brawn Gp effort to keep people racing... That is just low…
There was only the small teams that did not spend that much money, most of the back running teams did change their last season budged into next years dev work allso in 08 .. only difference was that Honda had bigger budged that they could move into dev for 09 car and combine it with original 09 budged.. Same story is still happening to this day… teams that write of the season at mid point, move their budgeds around to try to make best of it on next season. I do not see that as any valid point to lessen the achievement .. at all.
It was the perfect storm of events so i would call that a fairy tale, it is literally the equivalent of mclaren winning the title this season.
You should have more coverage on Indycar
With all the uncertainty going on with the team before the 2009 season even started, how can it not be considered a fairytale no matter the funds put into the car? Look at the job cuts and pay cuts that so many had to take.
If I go with my heart, I’m with Edd. Great work, team! Superb
I'm more and more amazed by these ridiculous videos autosport are putting out.
Is that sofa on the right way longer than I think?
they are forgetting one thing that the brawn car is still racing and its not a one off car the brawn car was just renamed its now Mercedes racing team with Lewis Hamilton racing the car
Therefore so is the Stewart and the Jordan and the Ligier. Seriously Ben - Shut the fuck up and stop making yourself look daft.
Straw.... one of the least appropriate surnames you could imagine....
Honda paid Buttons contract value in full as compensation for breach of contract then, on top of that, Brawn paid Button a retainer less than the Honda contract, so he got paid twice in 2009. Not really a pay cut that, is it?
Seeks odd for Honda to spend 2008 focusing on 2009 then fall out
F1 just posted a fairty tail brawn story lmao
Brawn GP - ex Honda - is effectively the foundation of the current Mercedes F1 dominating team. Yes, the current Mercedes car is completely different, but the people are mostly the same.
enzochiapet the ppl are the same? Are they actually

So what we've learnt is it's not valid to throw everything you have into winning a world championship..
Props to Brawn. I remember that year but I’m not interested in this video Edd Straw. I want to hear your comments about Qualifying at Melbourne and Mercedes.
Only time I cried because of another man's achievement. Button fan from beginning and still love watching the victory celebrations. God dam fairy tale to me.

They should make a movie about it
I met a guy a few years back that claimed he worked for mclaren .we talked about the brawn car and he told me Brawn and redbull had acquired high temperature plastics from nasa wich brawn were developing and using as a diffuser . Brawn because of Richard Branson and his airlines naturally had the upper hand whilst red bull were still learning ....

Why does everyone get so animated and sometimes abusive! This is just punditry, it doesn't matter. I don't watch football, but I'm sure the pundits give baseless opinion at times. I know they are journalists, but they are also enthusiasts, which might colour their views. I found this video interesting and covered most view points and didn't come down on one side or the other.
To call it a fairytale disregards the effort of the people behind the car, so I'd say it's a great story of perceiverence.
If the car had never raced, it would always have been the car that could have or should have. Its like the brabham fancar. Its the car that should never have excisted, but it did!
I'm sure every F1 fan has a 1:43 scale Brawn BGP 001 sitting on their shelf.
