Pat, i’ve been going back to where I started with watching your old videos and they are great but I notice how much you’ve developed it. One thing I notice is that you have totally eradicated the ‘err” and that must have been so hard. I sometimes video myself teaching and it surprises me how often I say ‘err’ ‘erm’. I don’t know how I’d get rid because it’s a nervous thing but well done on it because it makes the vids so much slicker. The cooking in this video is just fantastic.

Hi Mark, Yes the Rab Ridge raider is a great bivvy lightweight but with the hoop a bit more livable. Still like to use a basic bivvy bag sometimes in summer, get really close to nature then. Thanks for watching all the best Pat

Great video mate.... I used to take every bit of kit and the kitchen sink on wild camps!!!! But I'm now in the process of cutting right back and trying the light weight approach.. The bivvy looked very good... So did the food.. ATB - Marcus
Hi Marcus Yep I think we all start out with too much gear and weight but when those rucksack straps are digging into your shoulders for few hours sure has a good effect of making you reduce weight. I don,t go super lightweight as I still like a bit of comfort and like to be warm and comfortable at night.the food weighs a ton but its only a one way journey. all the best Pat
What fantastic views you have from there and so near to home, amazing that you might see as far away as Lincoln, thats about 50 miles away as the crow flies. I could almost smell the bacon, you can get British style bacon over here but only close to the tourist areas they dont sell it here here where I am in Granada!! Plenty of morcilla though!! I've a couple of questions - 1) where / how do you store your rucksack whilst sleeping ie inside or outside the bivi; 2) do you think condensation would be a problem for a long hike eg of several months duration; 3) is this bivi a side-opening one too? +130June Hi June There is not alot of room to store gear in the bivvy, small things like camera gear wash kit etc are ok . The big items like you say are the rucksack and boots, I store these outside the rucksack in a waterproof stuff sack a large one and also can put clothing in, my boots which will be muddy I also store outside in a smaller stuff sack, even in summer I put them in bags or they get soaked in dew, a cheaper and lighter method is a couple of bin liners.As for condensation if not heavy rain I sleep with door partially open seems to cure it. Depends a bit on the weather if still and damp then you get condensation if cool and windy, then not much condensation.This bivvy the Rab Ridge Raider it is just front opening and a bit awkward to get in, but light. The Rab Ridge Master a later model has side opening front and rear poles, more comfortable but a bit more heavy. Hope this helps and hope you enjoy your bivvying adventures, Pat
i should add, i always use a tarp ( DD hammocks lightweight small ) as my porch extension together with my Coshee 2 tent, works great, acres of space and a pretty good weight too.
I've come back to this video. One thing you said £200. For the tent why does it not have any ties at the foot end to make it stay up higher to allow better foot room. What do you think. I love your idea of the footprint to protect the bottom of the tent.
Pat, that ridge raider looks great. Have you ever considered using a small (lightweight) tarp as a porch extension, you could sling it over the pole in the ridge raider, that way when you come out of the ridge raider you are still under cover, you could even cook under there without getting wet. Im sure with your fabrication skills, you could knock up a small tarp in no time.
Matt Last Hi Matt yes did thing of it and good idea, but add the weight of the tarp and the weight starts to get to tent weight, so might as well take a tent, or I pick my bivvying days without rain, thanks Pat
i agreer Pat, BUT.. even with your ridge raider + tarp, weight wise it would be tent weight....BUT it would be comfort wise way above a tent on its own since they have a porch which is tiny compared to my 2.8m x 1.5m tarp
Took me a while to watch this one Pat. A great camp and not far away from home. I've never used a bivvy. Isn't it a bit difficult if you're trying to go to bed or pack up with one if it's raining? It's handy if you have a stone table and chairs right enought: I had that situation on Arran two years ago camping at a spot on the coastal path called Falling Rocks so I used a couple for table and chair :-). The only sounds I had all night was waves on the rocks and bird call.
Hi Terry I suppose you sacrifice comfort with weight with a bivvy and a more adventurous type of camping. Must admit I pick my weather carefully and tend to bivvy in dry conditions, Cooking in the rain not please t, some people have adviced a tarp Good idea but weight of tarp and bivvy why not take my tent. +moedem Hi there I know what you mean, sometimes I have bivvied on public campsites when gone away with friends who have slept in normal tent. I felt very vulnerable of a car running over me so made sure I bivvied next to a tree or car so protected a bit. On the moors where I bivvy on my own feel very safe as only a few sheep and deer about and tentd to keep clear of you. Thanks for watching Pat

Started a couple of years ago when I borrowed my wife,s small vidio camera to film the Lancaster flypast over Derwent resorvoir, then progressed to a SLR. Good way of letting family and friends know what your up to.

Anthony Kelly Hi Anto The bivvy I was using is the Rab ridge raider, Rab have a newer model called the Rab ridge master and as you mentioned it has a hooped pole at the bottom, this lifts the bivvy clear of your body but this extra pole adds more weight. I went for the Ridge Raider as I wanted to be as light as possible but with a bit of comfort. It's surprising what quality food you can cook with a couple of little stoves and it tastes great outdoors. Thanks for watching Pat

Hello pat great camp. Just wondering. The jacket you had on brand paramo . How did you get on with it? I had 2 and I find it hard to keep there water repellent to a good standard. I used the wash in bottles & spray but no way do they have that repellent when first few months of purchase. I done exactly what it said on the waterproof instructions. ???? Cheers Lawson
O defenatly meal is one of the best parts, have you tried doing steaks on a hot rock whilst out its unreal once you try it no steak ever tastes the same. no probs keep the videos coming
Hi thanks for comments,I try and reduce my pack weight as much as possible but I still like a bit of comfort. In summer months its easy to have a light pack but in winter everything is appears to be a bit more heavy

Hi Gary Yes its a great location for overnight camp. The camera I used was a Sony Alpha SLT-A37 which I find great for video, I try and uses a external mic as it tends to cut out the wind noise, and it is usually windy up on the hills round here.
i've just purchases rab ridge raider after watching your videos, so thanks for the review and advice. After watching this video, my question is how do you manage to get such good audio in those wind conditions?
+TheEnrieb Hi you,ve made a good choice with the bivvy, so easy to set up, light and surprisingly warm in cold weather. I film mostly with a sony SLR camera but with a remote microphone sometimes on the camera or on a long lead near to me, to reduce the wind noise a foam sock is over the microphone . The microphone came with a foam sock and I have bought them on ebay. Hope you have some great wild camps with the bivvy all the best Pat

+Stevo 1971 Hi Steve I,'ve never seen Lincoln cathedral but I have read that on exceptional clear days you can see it whether with binoculars not sure, I think its about 50 miles away the power stations at Ferrybridge and Drax are about 30-35 miles away and can be easly seen most days so it may be possible to see the extra 20 miles. Hi Patrick, what are your thoughts on wild camping in the Brecons, I've read that this is not allowed, but surely if you are tidy and respect others is this ok? We've got a kit list, probably too much, what are your thoughts on camping knives? are these required. Do you have a video on kit for a single night away?
Hi Andy, not familiar with the Brecons but like anywhere in the UK , apart from Scotland it accepted that you can wild camp as long as you camp late , leave early and nobody knows you have been there. I usually carry a knife, I carried a sheath knife for years then realised it was illegal so I carry a folding knife now, find it useful for a variety of thinks, most of my camps are just one nighter,s hope helpful Pat.

Hi yes we have the right to roam on majority of wild moorlands etc, wild camping is not allowed in England but everybody does as long as they are discreet and respectful to the landowner it is acceptable. There is still a lot of private farmland etc were you could only camp with permission, Pat
hi Richard if you go up Ringinglow Road out of Sheffield pass the Norfolk Arms pub after about a mile go right through a gate and walk up on to the moors for a mile that will get you to where I camped there are several area over looking the city of Sheffield in that area thanks Pat

It's handy if you have a stone table and chairs right enought: I had that situation on Arran two years ago camping at a spot on the coastal path called Falling Rocks so I used a couple for table and chair :-). The only sounds I had all night was waves on the rocks and bird call.
Hi Terry I suppose you sacrifice comfort with weight with a bivvy and a more adventurous type of camping. Must admit I pick my weather carefully and tend to bivvy in dry conditions, Cooking in the rain not please t, some people have adviced a tarp Good idea but weight of tarp and bivvy why not take my tent. Must admit once in the bivvy in cold wild weather it's really warm comfortable and secure, all the best Terry, Pat
Good to know they are warm and secure -I expect having a low profile helps in that respect. Being able to get online weather checks so easily these day is a real boon! Atb.

+moedem Hi there I know what you mean, sometimes I have bivvied on public campsites when gone away with friends who have slept in normal tent. I felt very vulnerable of a car running over me so made sure I bivvied next to a tree or car so protected a bit. On the moors where I bivvy on my own feel very safe as only a few sheep and deer about and tentd to keep clear of you. Thanks for watching Pat

Started a couple of years ago when I borrowed my wife,s small vidio camera to film the Lancaster flypast over Derwent resorvoir, then progressed to a SLR. Good way of letting family and friends know what your up to.

Anthony Kelly Hi Anto The bivvy I was using is the Rab ridge raider, Rab have a newer model called the Rab ridge master and as you mentioned it has a hooped pole at the bottom, this lifts the bivvy clear of your body but this extra pole adds more weight. I went for the Ridge Raider as I wanted to be as light as possible but with a bit of comfort. It's surprising what quality food you can cook with a couple of little stoves and it tastes great outdoors. Thanks for watching Pat

Hello pat great camp. Just wondering. The jacket you had on brand paramo . How did you get on with it? I had 2 and I find it hard to keep there water repellent to a good standard. I used the wash in bottles & spray but no way do they have that repellent when first few months of purchase. I done exactly what it said on the waterproof instructions. ???? Cheers Lawson

Hi thanks for comments,I try and reduce my pack weight as much as possible but I still like a bit of comfort. In summer months its easy to have a light pack but in winter everything is appears to be a bit more heavy

Yes its a great location for overnight camp.
The camera I used was a Sony Alpha SLT-A37 which I find great for video, I try and uses a external mic as it tends to cut out the wind noise, and it is usually windy up on the hills round here.
Why dont you get a PARA GLIDER and fly to the top of any moor super quick and adventurous..

i've just purchases rab ridge raider after watching your videos, so thanks for the review and advice. After watching this video, my question is how do you manage to get such good audio in those wind conditions?
+TheEnrieb Hi you,ve made a good choice with the bivvy, so easy to set up, light and surprisingly warm in cold weather. I film mostly with a sony SLR camera but with a remote microphone sometimes on the camera or on a long lead near to me, to reduce the wind noise a foam sock is over the microphone . The microphone came with a foam sock and I have bought them on ebay. Hope you have some great wild camps with the bivvy all the best Pat

+Stevo 1971 Hi Steve I,'ve never seen Lincoln cathedral but I have read that on exceptional clear days you can see it whether with binoculars not sure, I think its about 50 miles away the power stations at Ferrybridge and Drax are about 30-35 miles away and can be easly seen most days so it may be possible to see the extra 20 miles. Hi Patrick, what are your thoughts on wild camping in the Brecons, I've read that this is not allowed, but surely if you are tidy and respect others is this ok? We've got a kit list, probably too much, what are your thoughts on camping knives? are these required. Do you have a video on kit for a single night away?
Hi Andy, not familiar with the Brecons but like anywhere in the UK , apart from Scotland it accepted that you can wild camp as long as you camp late , leave early and nobody knows you have been there. I usually carry a knife, I carried a sheath knife for years then realised it was illegal so I carry a folding knife now, find it useful for a variety of thinks, most of my camps are just one nighter,s hope helpful Pat.
Hi Patrick, thanks for the response. Do you ever camp in a group or do you prefer your own company. A friend and me are going to the Brecons in November with our new Vango Banshee 300, not as robust as yours, but hopefully up the job. Good advice on the knife!

Hi yes we have the right to roam on majority of wild moorlands etc, wild camping is not allowed in England but everybody does as long as they are discreet and respectful to the landowner it is acceptable. There is still a lot of private farmland etc were you could only camp with permission, Pat

hi Richard if you go up Ringinglow Road out of Sheffield pass the Norfolk Arms pub after about a mile go right through a gate and walk up on to the moors for a mile that will get you to where I camped there are several area over looking the city of Sheffield in that area thanks Pat
