  • Happy #NationalParkWeek! On this #TransformationTuesday, we will be looking at the transformation of the Lincoln Home over its 182 year history.
Although today the Lincoln Home has been restored to how it looked when the Lincolns left it in 1861, it a lot has changed both inside and outside of the house over the years. The keys to the Lincoln Home have exchanged hands from the Lincoln family to several tenants, including the Tilton family (1861-1869), George Harlow (1869-1877), Jacob D. Akard (1877-1879), Dr. Gustov Adolph Hermann Wendlandt (1879-1883), and Osborn Oldroyd (1883-1887); and was then deeded to the State of Illinois (1887-1971) by Robert Lincoln before being established as a National Park Site in 1972. In between then, the house has undergone several restorations (in 1955 and 1987-88) and plenty of paint jobs. Inside the house, the décor has changed several times throughout the decades, as the new insight, artifacts, and research has emerged to help best tell the story of the Lincoln Home.
In this slideshow, get a glimpse into the changing look of the Lincoln Home over the years--from when the Lincolns left, to when it was run by the State of Illinois, to today! Have you visited the Lincoln Home or another National Park Site in the past? How has it transformed since your last visit?
