Songs of Home: Folk Songs and Holiday Tunes of Lincoln’s America with Ranger Max and Ranger Danny
Whether we can return to our homes for the season or not, holiday music connects us to memories of loved ones and cherished places. This was as true in the Lincolns’ time as it remains for us today. “Songs of Home” will use the musical performance of 19th century songs that evoke home - such as “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” “Simple Gifts,” and “Good King Wenceslas” - to offer connections to visitors on the themes of home and holiday traditions of the 19th century.

Totally. How much he would’ve done in his second term. Like giving Blacks the right to vote, reforming Bureau Of Indian Affairs and federal Indian policy since he called for it in his two final annual messages to Congress, and his leniency to the Confederacy would’ve had Reconstruction much better.

Per WestEgg inflation calculator, $1 in the 1850s is about $35 today. $1.50 per week is about $55 today. Even with room and board, that is a terrible wage. I'm sure they had to work more than 8 hours per day too. It goes to show that prior to the middle class emergence during the Gilded age, most people were very poor. In 2024, our money goes a whole lot farther for food (thanks to government subsidies), but not for footwear (in this video's example). Sugar is about $1 per pound (1850s equivalent price is more than 3 times that). Non-fancy coffee from Costco starts at $6 per pound (still less than 1850s). I'm sure I could find some nice slippers for $35. But if she means the modern equivalent of dress flats/loafers, then no (fake leather doesn't count). And even on sale, I don't think I could get a good pair of leather boots for under $100

"By the people and for the people" is true if you are talking about the SOUTH who VOTED in overwhelming numbers to leave.....But like an abusive ex-husband who finds his wife, burns her house down, drags her back and chains her to the bed the "Union was saved." Stop glorifying a politician that invaded his own country and waged "total war" on his politician. Lincoln and his generals are war criminals.

Sometimes in life we have to live in the deepest valley before we can experience the mountain top. Of course the trick is to keep going through the darkness even if it looks very dark

2:31 Bob did NOT join the army in 1864, it was February 1865. 2:44 Bob did NOT witness the surrender. He and the other junior officers had to wait outside. 3:33 Bob did NOT get his law degree from Harvard. He only attended one term, dropping out to join the army. He attended classes at the Old University of Chicago and read law at the firm of Scammon, McCagg & Fuller. He obtained his license in February 1867.

He locked up a journalist for failing to include a prayer for his success, didn't bother to free slaves in areas under his control and over all was pretty awful. Why is he held up as this saintly figure?

@@rekit7351citation needed for this. He didn’t free the slaves in northern territories during the war because he didn’t want them to succeed as-well. It was only after the war that this was done . Because overall he was pretty great.

@@TmanRock9and don’t forget to credit Dr Leale for trying to keep Lincoln alive. At least Lincoln was more proactive in keeping the nation than the other two previous godawful presidents have. Sure he was controversial when he was alive but still, his death doomed the nation even further and why things aren’t going well for minorities. A lot of this can trace back to James Buchanan’s disastrous failure to avoid the Civil War and reduce tensions between both the North and South; instead, he openly supported the south by giving them weapons, which is the key reason why the South was more prepared than the North. If Buchanan hadn’t done that, we could have likely had a 90 day war. The Civil War was clearly Buchanan’s fault

This ignores the elephant in the room: EACH STATE WAS MADE A SEPARATE SOVEREIGN NATION, BY THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. And Lincoln LIED about this, saying that they NEVER WERE, as his sole legal argument of national union. So he's basically right alongside history with Hirohito, Hitler, and Hussein; who all claimed other sovereign nations, as their own, to falsely claim national authority over them, and justify their illegal invasions. However the USA was NEVER a sovereign nation-- unlike Germany, Japan and Iraq.

He’s not even close to those and no the state had no right to secession and they shouldn’t either. Good riddance to the traitorous south.

The thing that confuses me is all the wall-to-wall carpeting. I thought wall-to-wall carpeting came into vogue in the 20th century. How would Mrs. Lincoln have kept it clean without a vacuum cleaner?

"I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on equal terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior. And I as much as any other man, am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race." -a. lincoln 4th debate with Stephen Douglas charleston, illinois. Sept. 18, 1858
