Defenetly don’t use impact. It’s not the impact driver that cause the problem is the fact that there is not enough wall on the bolt sides to engage the socket positively . I had to thin my outside diameter of my socket and faced the end , and built a “soft jaw” to grab the piston while loosening the bolt. You do not want to nick or damage the piston. I also get an upgraded bolt from Dr Vanos so that it would be easier next time. The most difficult part of the process, to me, was to install the Vanos back on the cam. It took me 6-8 tries till I felt like it was correct. Also when I refreshed mine, I walnut blasted the ports on the Vanos housing also, this cleans it right up. Make sure there is not blasting residue left though as you do not want this on your engine. On your TDC, I used cam lock block and the pin to lock the flywheel. This would ensure you are always at TDC. Loving your channel by the way..
mount it on a vice with soft jaw liners before cranking and by hand ofc, no impact lol. beisan sells a modified socket that has better contact so you don't risk rounding the bolt, cheap and well worth it imo.

What about the timing of this setup? Is this like the stock one, TDC, cam blocks, etc.? I think if you use another cam (not a set, just one), your timing would be changed, not like stock.
Luckily, I had an expert in the area that I had no clue was so close to me. If I had been patient I could have saved some mulah but all and all I have a far better understanding of the vanos. Your videos have been a huge help in my rebuild thus far. Thanks for that.
I have a brand new single vanos purchased from dr vanos. Customer overheated the 525 so badly they cracked the head. So it's not getting done. Anyone need a brand new part, msg me
