Abandoned Street Kitten First Bath

- This is the first bath of an 8 weeks old kitten. I found him and his sister on the street and took them home. The vet said they are healthy and I'm looking for families for them.

Best way to wash a kitten is to fill a shallow plastic bowl fill it with water then bathe the cat in the bowl. Running water is really scary and doesn’t really do a very good job
Running water may be scary but a shallow bowl is not a very effective way of rinsing soap out of a cat's fur. The best way is to use a spray nozzle for rinsing.

This really isn’t how you’re supposed to go about bathing a kitten for the first time. It might not seem significant but it is these early baths that determine how they will react to bathing in the future. For this kitten, the water is dangerous (in their head) and the noise of the water coming out of the faucet and hitting the sink is scary. It is a rather loud noise and it is even louder for them because they are right next to it.
If you are going to bathe a kitten for the first time you need to think in advance. Let the kitten see water, maybe put a little bit of it on their body just so they get used to it. Eventually you will have to turn on the faucet but if you go too hard the kitten will be scared of the sound. Let them explore it by themselves. Cats are naturally inquisitive so if you wait a little bit and give them time to realize the water isn’t dangerous, they won’t fear it. Then the best option is to plug the sink and fill it with warm water. Slowly place the kitten into the water WITHOUT the faucet running. Now at this point they still might meow but it’s because they are confused, nor really scared and that is a huge deal.
Doing these things determines whether or not an adult cat will FEAR the bath or not. They still might meow but if you did this correctly as a kitten, they will just express their discomfort by meowing instead of clawing and biting and yelling and trying their hardest to get out.
