  • This is a video I produced to highlight the beauty of both the railroad and the fall colors of north central New Mexico and south central Colorado. It was filmed at various points along the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad during a week long stay in Chama, New Mexico in October 2022, and is dedicated to the men and women, past and present, who have and continue to help preserve and keep the history of Narrow Gauge Mountain Railroading alive though out New Mexico and Colorado.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is a National Historic Landmark that moves. At 64-miles in length, it is the longest, the highest and most authentic Narrow Gauge steam railroad in North America, traveling through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Rocky Mountain West.
To learn a bit more about the unique history of this railroad and its truly historic contribution to the development of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado, check the link below:

In 1999 my wife and I took her parents on this trip, riding from Antonito to Chama, in October also. We had several periods of snow and during one bout my father-in-law and I were out on the open gondola. i turned around and he had the biggest grin, from ear-to-ear. He was also deaf (WWII artillery accident) but he still enjoyed the ride immensely. Sadly, both have since passed away, but I still remember that trip to this day.

Thank you for sharing your memory of riding the train.
I have fond memories from riding with my father for the first time in 1975. Thank you for watching.

Rode with my dad behind #487 in 2000. He's gone now, as well. Memories!

Thank you, Anita! I enjoyed creating it.
Mountain railroading, especially in the San Juan Mountains, has held a special place in my interests since I was a child.

I've done the DSNGRR twice but not this one; gotta do it one day. I think you have the right idea for when to visit that area. I gotta push my trips back to September, maybe early October. Thanks for all the impressive Fall scenery, cloudy, rainy weather and all. And thanks for a fun virtual train ride!!

You should ride. Wonderful experience of what narrow gauge railroading was like in mountains.

I got the special privilege to ride in the doghouse on Cumbres & Toltec 484 on the photo charter to prove its effectiveness in tandem with a caboose

The video quality is outstanding! It was really cool to see the trains moving around the yard as well as the water tank being filled. Steam engines are quite remarkable to see, especially when operating. We enjoy seeing them at the Green Bay National Railroad Museum in Wisconsin.

It’s been forever since I’ve been to this area in the fall. I don’t ever remember the aspens being so vibrant. I first developed my interest in mountain railroading history at an early age in the Pikes Peak gold camp areas before discovering the railroads of the San Juans.✌️

@@tangenttrails it has been a great year for the aspens, north to south, they really put on a show. We love the rich history in the mountains, the conditions, ingenuity and sheer will power are intriguing.

You should go back. We stayed for a week there this fall and helped shuttle CDT SOBO’s to and from Cumbres Pass and around town. Beautiful place. We love eating at The Boxcar Cafe and Fina’s place with the 4lb breakfast burritos.
