    It's times like this where I wish I was born earlier, so I could have gotten a chance to experience the Slizers and Roboriders, and heck, Bionicle's beginning. I feel like such a kid saying that, but it's true. To this day, I have yet to experience what the Slizers and Roboriders have to offer. I don't think it'll be quite as meaningful as it could have been back in the day, but it sure would be nice to at least hold one.

      While I didn't grow up with them, my brother did, and he had a few.
      And even the boxes.
      We thought those boxes were like their ships, and you know how the boxes have sorta landing gear or something near the opening?
      I thought those were to put at your belt.
      It helped that in the box there were slots for discs.

    I love the sets from the late 90s to the early 2000s, because of them being so experimental. I love the edgy and sleek, futuristic, industrial design. Lego really risked a lot in that time period and they managed to pull it of like nobody else. Also, the edginess makes the whole thing so cheesy, that it becomes awesome.

  • @Vrahno
    @Vrahno 7 років тому +94

    The experimental and out-there nature of stuff like the Slizers, RoboRiders or early Rahi endlessly fascinates me. The designs and story concepts thread the line between creativity and "lazily slapping parts around some play gimmick and calling it an alien robot/vehicle/animal/all of these at once". Sets like the Tarakava don't really resemble anything, but to me that makes them more interesting than some of the later, more "realistic" Rahi or a generic humanoid Titan. There's something to be said for those crazy environments and monsters they put on the background art too.
    I suppose these designs are emblematic of how Lego at the time was taking risks and throwing random stuff at the wall to see what sticks.

    • @TobeWilsonNetwork
      @TobeWilsonNetwork 5 років тому +5

      Vrahno I used to just stare at those backgrounds and wonder what the hell was going on in that world. Guess we never really found out but then Bionicle came along, books and all. I agree that it would be something else to open up a Dust Roborider and have that be your first experience with technic.

      The Tarakava were the only Bionicle sets from 2001 which I actually owned, and I never owned the Slizers or RoboRiders. I was avid fan of the theme for several years, and ended up with at least one set from each complete year except '02 for some reason.

      Depends. G2 Bionicle did constraction right. They looked interesting and were complex in their own way.
      Herofactory imho was constraction done wrong. The sets were basically dull dolls. Over time they ended up looking more and more like the G1 Bionicle sets than their own theme.
      It kind of ruins a theme when the only step forward is to go to another theme that did the same thing better. The other constraction themes before the Bionicle reboot were not perfect, but clearly evolving into what we got from G2.
      The new starwars constraction sets i gotta say are really well refined. I never would have thought of constraction being used to makes something so humanlike, but It does a really good job. It is clear that LEGO doesn't want to give up on constraction and if the new starwars sets do well the system can go back into it's own theme.

      @LilithLonelyHeart 7 років тому +1

      @The Gray Kirby you know third party have 2 issues, one is that their popularity depends on popularity of licensed franchise, so they are selling well as long as the franchise is doing well ok Star Wars is a franchise hard to kill but last few movies and overall changes in lore done when it was passed to Disney caused many fans to look at it way less serious, just hoping it won't be as bad influence as it sounds when i'm talking about it but... you never know until it happens. Other issue with these is that they are much more expensive than made on their own ip as they have to share profit with owner of the licensed franchise what means people have to pay more but LEGO don't get more, and often higher price can strongly discourage from buying. Shortly saying yes Risk is worth trying.

    If anyone thinks stuff like classic Contraction wouldn't appeal to kids, let me address
    about two weeks ago, I was with my Grandma on vacation at a flea market and we saw several toy booths. One of them had a boy eyeing a set of two loose Roboriders and he seemed to have fallen immediately in love with it. He asked his mom and he got it. He probably is enjoying it right now.
    Even if things like Bionicle G2 failed, that doesn't mean there aren't kids who like any Constraction sets, but it seems they are fond of the pre-CCBS style system sets more than CCBS it appeared. I guess because you are actually having a gimmick to build with which-while G2 Bionicle did try-I think kids like more than just arm swinging and actually want to build something with more substance with an action gimmick for combat with friends for instance yet still be physically stable at the same time unlike G2's easy to lose masks

    • @DaimosZ
      @DaimosZ 7 років тому +1

      I honestly do not know. It seems kids like the old Constraction style over the CCBS one (not that I hate CCBS mind you) because it feels closer to Lego sets they might get in box and build rather than having an exo skeleton already made for you. Bionicle G2 tried to expand it but imo ended up failing to catch American kids interests which is why the Line died prematurely.
      I guess kids like the style of Meccano and Erector toys because you have to build them completely from scratch but once you make it they have a sense of satisfaction and pride in making it. With CCBS and HF/Bionicle G2 they had occasional gears and levies to make but it didn't appeal to kids probably because it lacks a complete thing to build. It seems like in Star Wars CCBS they are trying to avoid that mostly but personally I'd like to see a non-CCBS original constraction line. I actually had a good idea for one back in 2014 with a sort of hybrid between Roboriders and Slizers with giant robots and humanoid synths battling the 5 Wickings (Wicked Kings) with their bodies and their vehicles which could fire off weapons to duke it out with the Wicking's armies which I guess would be a good idea for a plot

    • @DaimosZ
      @DaimosZ 7 років тому

      I'm referring to how the intended demographic sees it (kids)
      I personally love it but I can see why they don't sell well with kids, not to mention their pricetags make them unaffordable for them

    • @DaimosZ
      @DaimosZ 7 років тому

      probably us older fans it seems. I don't know of any 7 year old (referring to my cousins as reference btw) who owns any CCBS sets (they have the big figs of Marvel and DC characters though) and perhaps older fans can afford the sets and appreciate them more than younger kids did

    Bionicle has influenced and inspired me in more than 1 way, my love for writing and my skill of writing came from Bionicle, heck I read the entirety of 2001-2005 in 1 day, not to mention it got me into the MOCing community, plus it gave me a new outlook on life and how we are not alone and that in comparison to the universe we are small but together anyone can do either great things or give into our insanity, and chances are if it wasn't for Bionicle I wouldn't be who I am today, my first truly good story was a Bionicle fanfiction, I have an entire blog dedicated to achieving my MOCs, sorry if it sounds like I'm fanboying... because I am Bionicle is not just a toy line, heck it's not even just a lego theme, Bionicle is an experience not to be forgotten, its experience with something that we can all learn from, never give up.

      The 2000s were a stellar decade to be a constraction fan. Growing up I had gen 1 Bionicle along with Exo-Force and Knights' Kingdom. These three themes each offered wildly different takes on the "buildable action figure" concept, and that variety was amazing.
      Sadly, now that CCBS is dead constraction seems to be a thing of the past. The Minecraft bigfigs are pretty fun but I can't think of many other modern examples.

    • @FireFury190
      @FireFury190 3 роки тому +1

      @@kumatorahaltmanndreemurr Considering how many mechs Lego puts into their original lines I'm surprised they haven't brought back Exo-Force. Given that the whole line's theme is mechs. But I guess it just isn't as large a brand to reboot like Bionicle is.

    I remember having one of the Slizers back in the day, but that was a few years after I was born and I didn't have all the pieces. (At least I don't think so) I wanted to try to use its parts to make my own Keetongu MOC, but I ended up taking it apart too.
    Also, I really enjoy this series. It's interesting to learn about the old LEGO themes from before I was born in 1999 and afterwards. I really enjoy Planet Ripple, but I think this series was worth making. You don't have to spend so much time developing new episodes every 24/7, but honestly, all I can really say is, do whatever you want to do from here on out.

    Fun fact: Around 1998-1999, Lego was working on releasing a Technic video game. It was apparently an exploration game where the player would explore and alien world, collect bricks, and upgrade their own vehicle. Unfortunately, the game got scrapped when Lego Media lost faith in the developers. This actually makes me wonder if it was going to tie in with Cybermaster, Competition, Slizers, or even Roboriders to help complete the lore. It also makes me wonder if there was a Technic Constraction line made for 1999 instead of Throwbots.

    I've been watching a few of these LEGO Rewind videos now and I'm impressed with the attention to detail you have dedicated to following the developments of each product line, especially in this video. It's quite fun to hear about the Slizers again (never knew them as Throwbots though). I only had a few of them (definitely remember getting the Jungle Slizer first) and I was honestly quite fond of them. Even as a kid, I couldn't help but notice the similarities Bionicle had with them but that certainly didn't make me fall in love with them any less.

    I think I remember being really into the Slizers when they were a thing, but not so much the Roboriders.
    One weird thing I do remember about those was how one of the pictures you would get on the collectible wheels looked an awful lot like an enemy from Quake 2...
    Guess choosing that to base a face off makes sense if it's supposed to be "metal". Though, when you think about where it comes from, it's surprising it's that industrial metal and not more like viking power metal. :D
    I guess it's not the last time Lego would have a thing for industrial metal either, though.
    I vaguely remember the competition line too... I think I had some fun putting those together and taking them apart and figuring out how those extending arms actually worked.

    You know, I remember an old lego mania magazine that mentioned that the Throwbots were built by aliens in a distant galaxy and after ages of self-maintenece, became their own species. I wonder how this would have come across in comics or animations, especially in the old Flash animations that Lego used to do in the early 2000s?

    At 2006, the Bionicle designers clearly focused purely on form, with the only function being an entirely separate toy launcher that was just slapped on.

    Slizers and (to a lesser degree) Roboriders are very nostalgic to me. I was kinda sad when they got replaced by Bionicle, especially since (ignoring all the lore and focusing on sets themselves) Slizers were definitely more varied than Toa mata.
    I still remember the day my parents bought me my first Slizer, Judge. I eventually got most of them with the exception of Fire, Ice, City and Spark of the mutants.
    Few months ago I rebuilt them and put them on a shelf, although I'm still missing some parts of Blaster and I have no idea where Millennium is.
    Out of Roboriders I had Onyx, Dust and those four mini sets.

    I'm really glad you've made these videos. I feel that my interest in Lego decreased after Bionicle G2 ended, but these videos are so interesting that they basically reminded me why I loved these toys in the first place. This is why I look forward to any type of content you produce and I can't wait to see what else you have in store.

    I was thinking about a new toy line and story that would pay tribute to all of Constraction’s history. Call it "Bionicle Generations"; and despite the title, it's a mega crossover of all the Constraction themes from Championship to Bionicle G2. (through small sets under the "Stars" class, even stuff like Chima and KK2 is included) Each figure uses an improved version of the G2 Bionicle system with more support for old parts. Launchers would compliment other functions with Slizer engineering, with mostly the generic launchers being used (think the Zamors, stud launchers, plate launchers, flick-fire, and Championship missile), but the Kanoka and Rhotuka might be fun to resurrect.

    You know, if you look at the artwork for the Roboriders canisters, you'll see that some of the virus-spawned creatures look a lot like what you see in Bionicle's early artwork. For example, the cracks in the wrecking balls attacking Power look a lot like the cracks in the black stone the Matoran use to represent Makuta Teridax. There were even plans to make elemental creatures like that for the Toa to battle, but they scrapped them. Personally, I'm glad they did, because the Rahi were awesome for back in the day!

    Fond my Rock Slizer and Power Roborider... In a goddamn drug store. Chose the latter because he had arms. By the time I went looking for Onyx to make the combiner, they were out of stock (and discontinued).
    Major props should be given to the artist(s) who drew the Roboriders' backgrounds. As a kid, it made me wish I could have those as my playground. xD
    Such sweet memories... ;-)
