That point about looking away to judge the value of the color on your pallet knife just blew my mind! Excellent!

"painting vertical strokes in background create less glare" is this also the fact when painting is dry?

Donna Sheehan Yes, when you take into account final varnish. You can see masters use intentional horizontal strokes for light to hit objects for max reflection... similar to impasto effect for jewelry highlights.

Is this the method John Sargent used when painting his portraits? I understand he stood away from his canvas to view the model and color, then went up to the canvas to put down his strokes of paint.

This is a very rigid-scholar approach. Nothing loose about this. Could be said Sargent approach was a masterlike approach on this, much more freedom, not as rigid as this is raw sight size.

I don't know if I must say thank you for the lessen or just add what is really bothering me with this painting. Please don't take this the wrong way. in a time where everything is politically correct, one must just shut up and say nothing to avoid people crying or something. 1. I truly thank you so much for making this available online, to the institution and to the painter. 2. Wouldn't the painter agree that this painting is missing a big element to kick things off and provide this necessary (starting) focal point giving the pleasure to the eye to travel pleasantly around the whole painting? ? by that I mean, the composition. Suggested solution would be: a tea spoon. a silverware thrown in the middle of the painting. Not only the students will learn a wonderful skill of painting metal but the painting would sell or be part of the institution as a probably one of the nice pieces. This piece serve a purpose to just teach. A reply would be appreciated. Thanks you
