Paul Simon (Simon and Garfunkel) wrote this about society in the 1960's as i recall. I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel and i actually love both versions. Simon and Garfunkel kind of sad, Disturbed version more angry. I encourage you to listen to Simon and Garfunkel version and also Disturbed live version as someone else mentioned.

David Draiman was classically trained to be a cantor but his heart took him another way, musically.

Simon and Garfunkel wrote this song around the time of the Vietnam War and President Kennedys assassination. It was a warning to the world then, but you could also think it was also talking about today with what's going on just now. I was born in 1959 and I remember Kennedys assassination. I never really listened to the song much but when David sang this, I actually felt the words.
I am a 64 yr old Gran and now a fan of Disturbed and they have many songs that have meaning to them and that's coming from someone who was an avid Donny Osmond fan growing up. Hi from Scotland. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Did Simon Have a Vision Back in 1964 when he wrote this song? Yes look at the world today people are lost in the Mobile phone world the "NEON GOD" They don't listen they don't speak, and they live in their own world.

The original song by Simon & Garfunkel was written in 1964 during the Civil Rights Movement. The song says that people weren't really talking to each other but at each other, hearing each other but not listening to each other, and altogether people really just making chaos. But the song says that music would unite people, as the lyrics said "people writing songs that voices never share", and this music video showed all the musicians coming together with the rest of the people for a resolution at the end

Take neon lights and put mobile phone/technology and the silence that comes from no conversation to share together. Cannot believe you didn’t realise this was written by Simon & Garfunkel, both visionary that this would happen, even 60 years ago. Please do research before you put out songs🤯

I love Disturbed! But now you should listen to the Pentatonix version. Simon and Garfunkel's version was like a sad warning. David's version sounds angry, like no one heeded the warning. When Pentatonix sings, it sounds like there just might be a little hope.

No-body talks anymore heads down into their phones talking without speaking....(text). It is a very good soulful rendition of the song.. in town earlier I watched people walking even with each other they were not talking just on phones, it does not matter if it is London , Rome, or New York it is same all over their neon god is google . It can apply to so much about us all in so many ways. Great review just no more singing...please!

I'm old enough to remember the original version from S & G back in the '60's. This version is not my cup of tea, to say the least. Another singer has his own version of this song out on UA-cam right now, and you need to try it. The artist's name is Dan Vasc. There's no comparing his cover with this one. He's a force of nature and can sing ANY genre he decides to. Do yourself & your viewers a favor and start reacting to his music- you won't believe what you hear!

I remember S&G and I've loved this song since the first time I heard it, I was about 13-14 I think. I've heard many cover versions, some good, some bad, but I really like this one because the original, and all the previous covers, were soft and airy-fairy. This version takes that and turns it into a dystopian viewpoint, decrying the way people have ended up.
This is not a quiet acceptance of how things are or will be, it's a cry of rage and pain that things should be this way. I think it works better this way, and opened up a whole new understanding of the song. And like it or not, you must admit this bloke's got a voice on him.
I'll check Dan Vasc, always open to new stuff, thanks.

I'm from the generation that was in our late teens and early 20s when the Simon and Garfunkel original came out. That will ALWAYS be the best version for most of us. Having said that, it will probably not be a surprise that I really do not care for this version. Just doesn't do it for me. There are a few other covers that do have my "approval", most notably the one by Peter Hollens and Tim Foust.

Paul Simon, who wrote the original, loved it, posted a link on his social media, and told the band that they now own it. I loved the original and still own that first vinyl with this song on it, but I get goosebumps every time I hear it. I watched a special last year honoring Simon with famous singers performing all his famous songs. At the very end Simon came out and performed Sound of Silence. He changed that rhythm of the song completely from the original poppy folk rhythm. Oh, and I’m a 74 year old grandma!!!
