NS renewed their lease on the North Carolina Railroad between Raleigh and New Bern and soon thereafter starting running their thru trains over that route. They then shortlined the old NS main between Raleigh and Chocowinity via Wilson.
It varies. There are currently only two active customers on the western end of the railroad and through traffic into and out of Raleigh is seasonal with grain harvests. The most active customer on the western end of the railroad is in Zebulon and only requires service once a week.
Neverson is at the Hanson Rock Quarry. On the siding halfway down No.2 track is a machine with bush-hogs mounted on each side. It clears brush on the tracks, looks like it hasnt been in a while though. I go to quarry everyday.
CLNA does not switch Cargill. They deliver the cars to NS in Raleigh and NS switches them. You are correct about Bridgers and Hi-Cone being the active customers. And yes, the lime cars at Bridgers are unloaded via gravity on the short trestle.
They come to Zebulon once a week, and often make it as far as Wendell when Bridgers Farm Supply gets limestone. Otherwise, it's dead between Wendell and Raleigh.
Thank you for your information, if I may ask a couple more questions on operations in this area that you may know. Does CLNA switch Cargill in Raleigh via NS trackage rights? I take it the two active west end customers are Bridgers Farm Supply and plastics company ITT Hi-Cone? From Google Maps street views it seems hoppers of limestone are emptied via gravity on a short trestle. I think this makes for quite an interesting industry and really harks back to an earlier era of railroading!
I'd love to railfan this line, primarily on the western end (say Wilson west to Raleigh) in particular. Do you have any information on their train schedule or does it vary? I'm considering making this railroad the subject of a model railroad layout. Thank you for the great videos and keep 'em coming!
They didn't NS still operates those tracks (350-349-E26-E27 still go on those tracks between Raleigh-Selma-Newbern-Chocowitny). CLNA operates from Raleigh-Wilson-Chocowitny.
Trains N' Stuff nope however the only exception being in 2016 when hurricane Matthew damaged the North Carolina corridor via Selma with immense flooding and the old ns tracks remained practically unscathed due to being on higher ground
not to be negative but that may be the fastest you see a train go through there again....at least around here all shortlines have their mainlines less than 25 mph most are 10mph

cool vid. nice horn sound too.
Ironic to see a town named Wendell, HE HE HE :o) Nice video job!
Awesome! Has NS at all used the line since this footage taken almost 10 years ago? (Wow) Also, I subbed, keep up the good work.

Wow! An old DMIR engine...
nice, how far west does Carolina Coastal regularly come?
Don't you like old-school power? (Horn R/S3L?)

in my humble opinion, the SD9 needs a rebuild. replace the 567 with a 645 and they'ed be set. a new cab wouldn't hurt at all either
That's the least of their worry's....the electric trucks, self driving and follow the leader trucks will end shortlines fast.
DMIR
They need to get modern power. An SD70m would do just fine
Too expensive
