  • How to make a DIY solar panel for your solar powered plane project with laminating sheets and oralight. This is the most tricky part of this project: how to make it strong, light, flexible and efficient. We found a method for the encapsulation and we share it with you.
    The shopping list:
    Laminator - amzn.to/2pyaM1o
    Heat sealing tool - amzn.to/2pAH2kY
    Oven liner - amzn.to/2pATjWU
    Solar cells - s.click.aliexp...
    Tabbing wire - amzn.to/2pynxsx
    Welding tool - amzn.to/2ploidj
    Oralight - amzn.to/2pAxp67 (transparent)

    You should look into CIGS cells rather than crystalline silicone. They aren't as efficient by area, but they are less than half the mass per unit energy.

    Hello everyone,
    I see you are soldering each solar cell, to the next one, using 3 (three) independed nickel strips from the one (negative) tab of the cell A to the positive tab of the opposite cell B. I would like to ask what would happen if instead of using the independed stripes, someone will use the provided dogbone which interconnects all three tabs of the one cell as it has a vertical stripe in the middle. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using each approach? Thank you.

    or you can get the cells as thin film and skip everything else. No glass, no break, all one piece to begin with. It also comes in huge rolls, so you could cover the wings of a passenger plane too.

    I was wondering, why didn't you put the Oralight sheet on the cells, then put the oven liner inside the laminator? Couldn't this produce a nicer finish and get rid of the air bubbles?

    How much light energy is lost through the Oralight (sp)? I'm glad you didn't use the laminating surface very nice work. My Dad and his brother "trapped" many animals in the 30's in Skull Valley, running trap lines the full length of the valley.

    Why not laminate both sides and you used that "oralight"?

    • @SolarGliderProject
      @SolarGliderProject  5 років тому +1

      Oralight on both sides is too fragile. Laminating sheet on both sides is too heavy and it cut UV from the sun.

  • @piteoswaldo
    @piteoswaldo 7 років тому +2

    Why didn't you use the laminator to also cover the top part? Have you tested it?

    • @SolarGliderProject
      @SolarGliderProject  7 років тому +4

      Yes, we tested it. It makes the panel losing half power. Laminating sheets are designed to protect documents from UV. If you can find non-UV resistant laminating sheets tell me where I can't find them. And it's heavier than oralight too. With our solution, you get the best of both worlds.

      That depends on wich cells you are using. These days best cells provide up to 3.6w per cells in best conditions. How long ? Sun, clouds, date... Hard to answer but 3 hours before and after noon give you a very good power.

    Does this plane use batteries as well as solar? I was just suggesting to another solar plane builder that supercapacitors might be exactly what you need to store enough energy for the times that you need boost and to store extra power available from the solar panels when the plane is not consuming any current under glide.

    • @SolarGliderProject
      @SolarGliderProject  6 років тому

      +izzzzzz6 Hi. Capacitors are an interesting technology, but we are more in focus of optimising energy with the new arduplane feature : thermals hunting.
      We need to study capacitors specs to see if it's good for the project. Thank you for advice.

      if water doesnt damage solar , u should use it.

    •  7 років тому +4

      If you are worried about water damaging your cells, you can use 99.9% isopropyl alcohol (I am using it for applying protective films on LCD screens) It also has an advantage of quickly evaporating through microscopic pores in the film surface. So even if you don't get all of it out, it should get out over time

    Will laminator works with EVA foam?

  • @patrickobaldo883
    @patrickobaldo883 7 років тому

    You could omit some of the steps if you prepare the materials correctly. 1) Have the laminating sheets separated and pre-cut (including the solder points), 2) have the Oralight film heated with the rest of the parts (this may even be better than manually ironing it on, and removes the need for liner.) Nice project though.

    • @JeanJacquesBoe
      @JeanJacquesBoe 7 років тому

      Patrick Jerome Obaldo Thank you. We have tested these options : oralight in the laminator don't works at all. I had to disassemble the lamitor to remove the oralight inside. And the iron is done before putting the oralight not to burn it.

    • @patrickobaldo883
      @patrickobaldo883 7 років тому

      Hi Jean, that's good to know. Didn't think that Oralight would get stuck inside of the laminator. How about enveloping the whole laminate-solarcell-oralight sandwich inside of the liner before laminating?

    • @JeanJacquesBoe
      @JeanJacquesBoe 7 років тому

      Patrick Jerome Obaldo for that cell have to be soldered before laminating and the laminator do not like it. And if we solder after laminating oralight will be burned. By the way i'm sure the process can be optimized, keep suggesting your ideas.

    • @SolarGliderProject
      @SolarGliderProject  6 років тому

      +Grespino 1 hello, potentially yes, that's why we solder cells after laminating. The surface need to be totaly flat not to damage cells. But even with some cracks, solar cells work perfectly.

    Bonjour j'aimerais essayer de faire un simple panneau solaire pliant. Je trouvais l'idée de la plastifieuse très intéressante et facile. Mais j'ai lu dans les commentaires que les films standards font chuter le rendement des cellules, d'ailleurs un commentaire disait avoir une baisse que de 5% avec un film trouvé au hasard, qu'est ce qu'il a de particulier ce film ? Et sinon est ce qu'on peut plastifier de l'EVA ? Apparemment c'était trop lourd pour votre projet, mais j'ai pas ce soucis. Merci.

    • @SolarGliderProject
      @SolarGliderProject  4 роки тому

      Bonjour, le standard pour protéger les cellules c'est un film d'eva que l'on chauffe en faisant une aspiration pour le plaquer contre les cellules, il y a des vidéos qui montrent bien le procédé. Pour un avion c'est trop lourd. Effectivement le film pour plastifier les documents est conçu pour arrêter les UV afin de protéger les documents, c'est donc vraiment pas adapté pour le solaire, en tout cas d'un côté.

    • @antimondialiste4805
      @antimondialiste4805 4 роки тому

      @@SolarGliderProjectMerci pour votre réponse. Pour en revenir à ce commentaire qui annonçait une baisse de seulement 5% avec un film de 25micron, il devait vous envoyer les références de ce film trouvé par hasard dans une papeterie, c'est peut être la finesse du film qui limite les pertes. Je pourrais utiliser un film épais de 150micron ou plus sur le dos pour la rigidité solidité et un film léger en surface pour rendre les pertes tolérables ?
      L'oralight fait 36g/m² et donné pour 22microns est ce que c'est pas en partie sa faible épaisseur qui permet de pas trop nuire au rendement des cellules ? Merci.

    • @SolarGliderProject
      @SolarGliderProject  4 роки тому

      Bonjour, il faut faire des tests, c'est comme ça que nous avons fait des choix. Je n'ai pas trouvé dans le commerce ni sur internet le film idéal pour plastifier des cellules solaires.

      We haven't seen it on internet, just in our local printing houses. I can send you as much as you want... But, we're not that happy with it yet. let us first understand what is the problem with it. After few of days flight we have noticed that some cells have micro cracks. To my surprise it was not affecting on power generation. But we think that lamination could be the reason with different shrinking coefficient.
