Back to the Future works for 1985. It feels like 2025 would be odd, and going back to 1995 wouldn't work as well. Yes, there are differences, but not as many as between 1955 and 1985. My dad was 3 in 1955, and I was 3 when Back to the Future came out in 1985. So we have the 30 year difference in age that Marty and his parents had. The 90s didn't have that innocence/naiveté that the 50s had. Remaking Back to the Future just doesn't work the same. I guess they could go back to grandparents' time rather than parents' but that would be weird. I guess I don't view the 90s as all that nostalgic.

@@jarosbodytko6462 Of course I do. There are avant gard, independents, the musicals, I watch them all. But we were speaking to blockbusters here which as a genre used to be great and have been trending downward the last few years.
The backbone of the original Ghostbusters story was about entrepreneurs starting up an improbable company that became successful. Anyone who has run a business recognizes all the issues: getting financing, paying expenses, getting clients, dealing with government regulation. It's much more than just the ghosts, and it really can never be recreated.
Exactly! I keep saying this as well. It’s about a bunch of blue collar type guys messing around with each other and somehow becoming successful. Half the time they are trying to get laid or goof off. There’s a lot of sexual and witty jokes in there. It is NOT a family themed movie, kids just happened to love it. So constantly forcing these to be family films is making them lame. Even Afterlife looked like a lame Hallmark version of the edgy comedy the original was.
It shouldn't be recreated, because the original already did it. Problem is, that the original is a certified classic so people always compare every sequel to the first film. As a consequence when it's too new, it's not enough like the original, and when it is like the original it's nostalgia bait; Ghostbusters films are always unfairly judged 🤷🏾♂️
I really didn’t think it was this bad. Nothing will ever compare to the original but this one was fun, I liked the beginning, it had more laughs than Afterlife, some of it felt forced but I still liked it. Going to see it again tomorrow.
In every Ghostbusters film if you are not Bill Murray or Signourney Weaver you show up in parts, and that's it. This is true for Afterlife as well with some characters being gone for more than several scenes at a time, or not nearly being as central as you might think. With Villains it's different every film, Gozer is barely in the first film (she gets way more in Afterlife), Vigo is revealed to the audience, but it isn't until midway that our heroes even have an idea it's the painting. What I'm getting at is that Ghostbusters films are often criticized for things that aren't even true for the other films. The wildest part is that people complain that every sequel isn't like the first film, but then dump on it for not being too much like it's insane.
I felt the relationship between the phoebe and the ghost was trying to go into a possibly live story but they didn’t want to pull the trigger 100 percent

I agree with you on the Patton Oswald thing, I'm pretty sure I audibly sighed when he came on screen because I knew it wasn't going to be important and he was just there because of who he is. They easily could have had Ray just know about the items Pattons character shows them and it would have made just as much sense and maybe allowed some more time for the final act to breathe
I propose we'll find out that Bill Murray agreed to do this movie for a certain amount of money and that agreement also specified some small amounts of time for shooting. Something like "maximum of 5 days for shooting, 2 days of reshoots and adr, and 1 day of promo" and that's why he's such an afterthought.

I really loved the legacy sequel. i echo all your (Dan's) thoughts on the most recent revitalization of ghostbusters, so i had high hopes for this one, if not cautiously high hopes. Bummed to hear this.
I'm exhausted by the old Ghostbusters' cast still being around. Just - Go - Away. Give the new franchise room to bloody breathe and survive on its own, if it can. Damn.
Absolutely agree. The worst part of the last Movie was when the old cast showed up and started saying lines mimicking or referencing lines from the first 2
I guess it's just a matter of feeling the same way in thinking bringing these old cast members back for fan clout often times comes at the expense of the new cast. It's both limiting and annoying.
I hate when movies try to present kids acting like adults. Afterlife had those annoying kids acting like no kids act. This movies looks to be more of the same. I'll pass.
That's a bummer. Ghostbusters is such a lightning in a bottle that you cannot recreate it without a strong thunderstorm. I wonder if the story would work better if it tried new concepts and ideas similar to the cartoon.
Honestly, I am starting to find these nostalgic movies kinda sad for how so many adults are latching on to their childhoods. It’s kinda pathetic how so many people can’t move on. Pop culture needs to move forward.
I realized a few weeks ago that the marketing of this film seemed non-existent. Between that, lack luster trailers and the late review embargo lift I was expecting this to be a stinker. Truly unfortunate. Thanks for verifying my fears (I guess….ugh).
Dan - you basically hit the nail on the head with everything you said about this film. Pretty much every point you made I was nodding in agreement with. For me, I feel that it's like an incomplete puzzle with some of the puzzle pieces strewn out on the table -- all the elements are there, but unfortunately a complete picture wasn't formed with them. It seems that the script could have done with a few more revisions and some more time on it to flesh some things out more, make further edits, etc.
Just saw it today after work and loved it. It really felt like an episode of The Real Ghostbusters. What I did like about it was it took the concept of catching ghosts somewhat seriously like the orignal film did, it didnt feel like it needed to deconstruct the Ghostbusters or wink at that camera that this is all a farce like the 2016 s*** film did. Though the film could have done with a lot more Murray!
The trailer for this never looked particularly good. It didn't seem to have a compelling reason to exist beyond memberberries. I'll be honest, I loved monster House, and I think they should have played to the directors strengths in that regard, confine the story and location to a single property where all hell breaks loose.
Not to mention the cash grab coat... To which are worn by knowbody. For any reason in any scene of the film.. Same coats people threw thousands of dollars away to just have... All this movie did for me was....... Crap. Anybody seem 10 bucks?
It's like a Star Wars movies, everyone that didn't add to the story were probably just famous fans that wanted a cameo. They should have just written a story that focused on the villain and the heroes and just added two quick cameos for famous fans but no more than that. It probably would have made the flow better and would have allowed more screen time to connect to the main cast.
Not really aGhostbusters fan, so was planning on seeing Late Night With the Devil this weekend. Guess that's probably the better call after hearing your review. 😅
Fans enjoy the films for more than just the Ghostbusters themselves. There are several we also enjoy, such as the lore, gear, and general busting adventures. Especially those of us who watched the cartoon. Having also been fortunate enough to see an early screening, I had the opposite experience of what you described and can't imagine preferring Afterlife to this film. I am eagerly looking forward to seeing it again! I believe your final rating was more revealing about your feelings toward the franchise than the film itself.
Great comment RE: Gale and Zemeckis. They have ended up beating everyone and everything else by simply doing nothing and allowing their fantastic films to live on - because they’ll never be beaten by anything new.
I hated Afterlife so based off that I know that Frozen Empire will most likely not be for me (despite being a kid of the eighties who thinks the original Ghostbusters is the best film to come out of the decade), so I will wait for this to hit Netflix where I can turn it off if I am not enjoying it. I did the same with Afterlife and turned that garbage off 45 min into the movie.
@heatheraggus7501 The thing is the 1st one was a comedy about some collage dropouts trying to make money. Afterlife and by the looks of it this one too are basically a bargin basement version of The Goonies
For me, it somewhat bugs me that they insisted on going back to New York City again, after doing pretty well in giving that small town a lot of character in the same way the original film did for New York City. Now they traded that in just because they want a more "cinematic" place to set the story. I will give credit at least that the main ghost has a cool design.
They could have upped the stakes by having it set in London, Cairo, Athens or some other city with a history to haunt it. Eccentrics abroad dealing with the local authorities would make the comedy easier to be distinctive and unforced.
I saw the film today 22/3! I have to agree with all you say with this review Dan! I found the film entertaining to a degree but nothing greatly impressive!
Personally, I always prefered Ghostbusters in serialised form. Why not make more Ghostbusters shows?? A live-action series that continues from the movies would’ve been better.
I'm assuming you're young. Regardless, the concept of a bunch of quirky people creating a business where they strap on proton packs and take house calls from fearful/annoyed callers to get rid of ghosts is ripe for a franchise viability. Not too dissimilar from the concept of superhero movies.
The poster just has so many people on it I was wondering how this film would fit meaningful interactions with everyone and sounds like it doesn't. Like you can tell from the trailers that Lucky is not in this that much but Finn Wolfhard being sidelined is also surprising.
Im seeing it this morning here in Australia in Gold Class. Booked my tickets a week ago and thisvreview makes me sad and has taken the plasma out of my proton pack! 😢
Watched it last night. Totally agree with your review. I felt sad at the end of the movie : so much wasted potential. It felt like they shot an early draft, and ditched the idea of hiring a script doctor in order to (MINOR SPOILER ALERT) : 1) fix the pacing issue, 2) get rid of all unnecessary characters, 3) ditch some of the fan service (ie; the baby Stay Puffed are useless, so is Slimer), 4) make the menace more tangible, by the time the bad guy appears I barely cared anymore.
I also saw this last night and I felt the same melancholy. I actually liked Afterlife and thought this movie would build on that good will. They can stop now unless really have a great script but I won't hold my breath.
This movie will not freeze your balls, its just a return to a normal world of ghost chasing but I am happy to see the family and the daughter interaction with a spirit and her little story, still I enjoyed this simple story.
I’m hoping we’ll see the end of a few franchises from Hollywood- ghostbusters, kung fu panda. A lot of series that feel like they’re on their last legs
Just passable film for me. Although I do feel it is left in a good place to continue. The big spectacle in the first 2 arent there to be serious, stay puft and statue of liberty arent serious like this bad guy which doesnt really work. I would pivot to the research lab and trim the cast. Focus on the comedy on their day to day smaller jobs.
There are......some.....bits in each of the Ghostbusters sequels that are genuinely fun but, imo, all the other films _really_ do is further highlight how good the original GB film is.
Thank you for pointing out things that were in the trailers but not in the final film. Please keep doing this for future reviews.

I really loved the legacy sequel. i echo all your (Dan's) thoughts on the most recent revitalization of ghostbusters, so i had high hopes for this one, if not cautiously high hopes. Bummed to hear this.
Same here.
God bless the bobs for preserving BTTF
I'm exhausted by the old Ghostbusters' cast still being around. Just - Go - Away. Give the new franchise room to bloody breathe and survive on its own, if it can. Damn.
Absolutely agree. The worst part of the last
Movie was when the old cast showed up and started saying lines mimicking or referencing lines from the first 2
I guess it's just a matter of feeling the same way in thinking bringing these old cast members back for fan clout often times comes at the expense of the new cast. It's both limiting and annoying.
@@SkuteI agree, them showing up was my least favourite part of the last movie and their scene just dragged on.
Good thing 99% of real Ghosbusters fans disagree with you!
Just saw the movie and maaaannnn did I want them to kiss in THAT scene. You know the one.
Had no idea this movie was coming out this weekend. Don’t understand how they turned a comedy about ghost exterminators into a big action blockbuster.
I like the hotel setup. You aren't yelling or talking really fast. It reminds me of the SJU days.
I’m not surprised by any of these points you have highlighted.
I realized a few weeks ago that the marketing of this film seemed non-existent. Between that, lack luster trailers and the late review embargo lift I was expecting this to be a stinker. Truly unfortunate. Thanks for verifying my fears (I guess….ugh).
Dan, thanks for the honest review. I was on the fence, I will be waiting for streaming.
Money is tight!
I was so excited after hearing your review for afterife. And I'm bummed to hear your take on this one
Thank you for saying is - FOCUS.
Thank you for your review. Sounds just like I predicted
Dan's ASMR is so relaxing and funny
The trailer for this never looked particularly good. It didn't seem to have a compelling reason to exist beyond memberberries.
I'll be honest, I loved monster House, and I think they should have played to the directors strengths in that regard, confine the story and location to a single property where all hell breaks loose.
This is really unfortunate, but not that surprising. I think I'll still have a good time with it though, but not expecting much.
Dang it. Trailer felt like it. Dan confirmed it. Headed to see it tomorrow with tempered expectations.
5:32 And the 2016 ?
I know they’re all gonna die but the only way they’re gonna pass on the torch
Not to mention the cash grab coat...
To which are worn by knowbody.
For any reason in any scene of the film..
Same coats people threw thousands of dollars away to just have...
All this movie did for me was.......
Crap.
Anybody seem 10 bucks?
oh, no!
what you thought of this one is what i thot of II and III.
I can’t even imagine.
Ghostbusters: Winter is coming....
Those deleted scenes need to be put in an extended edition...
I never even heard this was coming out
"no more GHOSTBUSTERS" was sound advice well before GHOSTBUSTERS 2
No. GB2 was great.
Yes. I saw both 😈 👍
Fans enjoy the films for more than just the Ghostbusters themselves.
Seeing it tomorrow with my homies
Yeah this is exactly what I expected honestly
Lacks thd New York dry wit of the orignal ....pretty mediocre .
I agree, Afterlife was just a generic kids action film
@@cuprashoe Couldn't agree more
@@cuprashoegreat description. It felt juvenile to me.
@heatheraggus7501 The thing is the 1st one was a comedy about some collage dropouts trying to make money. Afterlife and by the looks of it this one too are basically a bargin basement version of The Goonies
This is going to be Frozen Summer, the alternate subtitle used by Japan for Frozen Empire.
They call it frozen empire because the franchise is frozen in time
the last one kind of flopped(195 worldwide) so their is is no new fans flocking to it
For me, it somewhat bugs me that they insisted on going back to New York City again, after doing pretty well in giving that small town a lot of character in the same way the original film did for New York City.
Dude I can feel your pain. 😂
It genuinely baffles me that Ghostbusters is even a franchise.
Personally, I always prefered Ghostbusters in serialised form. Why not make more Ghostbusters shows?? A live-action series that continues from the movies would’ve been better.
Ghostbusters is one fun movie and a collection of bad to mediocre movies and shows that have no point in existing.
I'm assuming you're young.
Regardless, the concept of a bunch of quirky people creating a business where they strap on proton packs and take house calls from fearful/annoyed callers to get rid of ghosts is ripe for a franchise viability.
Not too dissimilar from the concept of superhero movies.
What a shame. I was hoping Afterlife got it recharged
They should of made the boogeyman as the main villain in the afterlife . EGON WAS TORTMENTED . That's why he moved his family.
F those reviews that just ruins your experience just watch it anyway
I just saw it. For me, Dan's review is pretty much spot-on with every aspect he brought up.
@@flybriur was garraka defeated I need spoilers
I absolutely hated the last Ghostbusters movie so I guess I will be skipping this one.
So, Bill Murray and the other Ghostbusters save the day against the ice baddie? And what happens to Walter Peck?
This movie was 100% garbage & ghostbusters afterlife was trash as well.
This movie will not freeze your balls, its just a return to a normal world of ghost chasing but I am happy to see the family and the daughter interaction with a spirit and her little story, still I enjoyed this simple story.
Out of character and Ghosts do not speak to people like Casper in this universe. ..
Thanks for the warning Dan.
“I don’t care if it’s good they have slimer and little marshmallow men” - ghostbusters fans
Oh muh memberberries!!
good video thanks
Thank you for the heads up, sorry it did not hit the mark.
I’m hoping we’ll see the end of a few franchises from Hollywood- ghostbusters, kung fu panda. A lot of series that feel like they’re on their last legs
I can tell in the trailers that most of the adult actors are just going about the motions.
Saw it. And I completely agree.
There are......some.....bits in each of the Ghostbusters sequels that are genuinely fun but, imo, all the other films _really_ do is further highlight how good the original GB film is.
