My impression of fancy hotels in China, is that they are flash when first built, but degrade fairly rapidly due to a combination of almost zero maintenance and poor craftsmanship.
My impression of fancy America is that most of Americans are homeless and drug addictive,as I passed by Berkeley CA and saw many homeless people soaked in weeds smells in the train station .Make sense.
I worked in Shanghai for two years. I used to wear a suit and tie to work, but as soon as I got back to the company apartment in Pudong Liu, after a shower. I would change into polo shirt or T-shirt and shorts. Then off the The Red Lion ex-pats pub in Wéifang Liu. In those two years, I drank a lot of Tsingdao and got extremely good at pool. Thankfully, although the company apartment was basic, the AC was ice-cool.
Unfortunately, in China, maintenance of buildings stops after they are built. I stayed in a 4 star hotel in Zhuhai and the same phone situation happened to me.
Last month I stayed in Thailand in a Le Meridian Resort for $80/night which was 5 Stars by any standards and had service quality above everything you will get in Europe or America for double that money. You notice that the Thais actually work very hard to make you feel welcome and comfortable.
The reason for hotels in China having a Glass to look from the shower to the actual room is so that the guy can make sure while he is taking a shower, the lady of the night does not empty his wallet and run.
Same here. For the last 15+ years I live in the Netherlands, but I was born in the ussr, so I know very well what's going on there too. If we take countries like North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, South Africa etc. out of equation as a special case and agree that no one should live there at all, only Russia would be the worse place to live than China. But those two powers are heading the completely opposite path, while China is notably improving and developing itself, Russia is degrading and hopefully falling apart. Communism is evil, that's enough to say, because each and every country that has or had been contaminated with communism, must either heal or die. China is obviously healing, it still has a long way to go, but it is at least heading the right direction.

My condolences, ADVChina. I'm staying at a Sheraton hotel right now. It's not five-star, but neither was yours by the looks of it. I truly don't understand China's half ass approach to upkeep. Maybe that's not a very popular tourist attraction and thus they just go cheap. Popular ones got tidier places. As for upkeep, well, let's say that many of these places might chose to build awesome things to get government support or just to get more stars to brag about. And then, well, the demand is not high enough and they have to go cheap. Also, that bacon is like, well, sure in China we don't have a lot of different types of bacons but, it's just not hard at all to at least buy real bacon XD Those "bacon" can't even fool Chinese people I think XD
It looks like a nice location, but that is definitely not a five star hotel. You would probably pay about $70-$80 (USD) for a room like that in the US. And even then, the room would be nicer. At least the AC and telephone would work properly, and there wouldn't be mold all over the walls.
I used to watch this channel for more insight about my home country. But now, it's the vibe between you guys that keeps the channel vibrant. Much like Top Gear/Gran Tour. Even if you guys one day decide to leave this place behind, as long as you stick together, I am pretty sure this channel will keep coping. Sad that prozzie is going away tho.
Just finished watching "Conquering Southern China". Thank you for the excellent adventure. I did the circumference of Taiwan in '92 before there were actual roads in many places. We were on dirt trails for a good portion. It was the hardest I've ever worked to have some of the best time of my life.
I know this is old and you guys aren’t even in China any more, but thought I’d chime in anyway. In my 26 years of traveling in China, I have found that there are two levels of star ratings in China, even under Western flag brands. There is the Chinese five star and there is the Western five star. There is a massive difference between the two. Often when the hotel is new, it is indeed a five star experience, but as many have stated in the comments, no maintenance is done after construction is completed in many cases. As the building deteriorates, so does service and everything else, but the star rating doesn’t. The exception is in some of the larger cities that cater exclusively to a Western audience and are under a premium flag. Then they seem to maintain a fairly good level. You will pay a large premium for that though. A true five star in a major city is as expensive as London or Manhattan.

I find your insights into China from foreign expats' perspectives are really interesting and I can't help but keep binge watching you channel. Folks, I had a similar experience in the Sheraton Xinbei in Changzhou a few times. The first time I went there, it was almost new, the rooms looked nice and everything was fine, other than traffic noise which wasn't too bad given the location of the room. The second time, it was a disaster. The room was so hot, I called the maintenance man not once but twice. He said (like CmIlk) that the room was centrally set and I said if you can't fix it, I am moving out and will demand a refund or I'll write to SPG (the central chain for Sheraton, Westin, Meridien, W, etc) and complain. So the guy scratches his head and makes a few adjustments, which apparently affect the entire floor. The temp went from about 27.5 degrees C to about 24.5, which was still hot and stuffy but not unbearable. Next day it went back to 27.5 degrees, and I moved out. I am also a lifetime gold card member of SPG and got a superficially nice club room but the temp was miles too high, and it was on a major intersection and the entire time I heard the traffic, and that involves constant horn usage, 24 hrs a day. If they had bothered to double glaze the rooms that could have been avoided. Just to comment on the chains. The chains rarely own the individual hotel - they are operators, not owners. Sometimes the hotel is directly owned, particularly Hilton, but by far the most common practice is that they are privately owned and they sign up with a chain for a management contract, using their branding and marketing systems. I have stayed in hundreds of Sheratons and other SPG properties and they are generally fine. I could also give you examples of disasters with other chains, though I do agree with one commentator that in Asia, Hilton are generally more consistent. But that isn't a blanket rule. As a general rule in China, I find that the chain hotels in the second tier cities are not as good as in Shanghai for example, but even then, you need to check the place out (I use TripAdvisor) before booking. I also try and find hotels that are either new, or else have recently been renovated. The comments about no maintenance are also partly true in the rest of Asia, and the locals often don't understand why you make a fuss about paint peeling off, stained and dirty carpets, or whatever.
Marriott properties in China in general are better than SPG, but there are not as many as SPGs and Hiltons. Chinese people, especially those above 40s, do not like AC to be turned below 26 and I fucking hate that. The domestic flights sometimes get intolerably hot and there are still people asking for blankets. Same apply to drinks, too. Many places will serve your soda and beer in room temperature.
I finished traveling in China with my mother. We stayed in "4 Star" or "5 Star" establishments. Winston's experience with the awful, undercooked bacon at breakfast was exactly spot on. AC in these premier establishments was hit or miss. Even in Shanghai.
I stayed in a Chinese hotel, the extractor fan in the bathroom was a disgrace. It was hanging from the wall with wiring exposed. There was evidence that botched attempts had been made fix it with mastic in the past. I photographed it to show the reception desk. They showed complete indifference. The Chinese may well be building at an alarming rate but the quality is bad.
I.M. Pei, one of the most famous Chinese American architects who designed the BOChina tower in HK, also designed a five star hotel near Beijing not long after China opened up to the West. He wrote about his frustrations in his autobiography. Particularly when he went back to see it a year or two later, it hadn't been very well maintained, to say the least. If you want to vlog on this subject, then you need to go stay in the White Swan in GZ. I visited it in 1985, though we stayed in a guest house across the street. It was like an island of luxury, then even with its own self contained power generation facility. It's always been maintained to an international five star standard and was one of the first five star hotels in China. In the 1980s, local Chinese weren't allowed inside the White Swan. How times have changed. Now the locals are the ones with the money.
Great stuff guys. I really like the work you two put into your videos. It's certainly given me a better impression of China than anything I've ever seen or was taught back in school (US), and I'm almost 50 years old so that's a few years now. I like that your videos are frank conversations of life in China, and about the people of China. Most westerners just focus on the totalitarian government of China and its suppression of the Chinese dissidents, while they ignore the facts of daily life for the average Chinese citizen. You two make videos that don't make China out to be a utopia, but focus on the richness of Chinese culture, the lives of regular people, and you also bring to light the negatives that are a part of Chinese culture as well (The lack of caring about public property, the sometimes over the top nationalism, scams, etc.) without making it a preachy political bullshit opinion piece. Sorry this is so long of a comment. I hope you read it because I want you to know how much I appreciate the work you guys do. I feel if a westerner, or anyone non Asian for that matter, wants to experience Asian culture, India, Hong Kong, and Japan are the best options, India being the cheaper option. Japan is modern and capitalistic, so you know you're in one of the best places in terms of comfort. They have a lot of tradition too, so it's definitely going to be a great holiday. India has lesser technological development, but you get to see so many cultures there. Moreover, if you stick to big cities and 4-5star hotels, you'll have a great time here too. The biggest perk in India is they practically have most of the first world country's amenities for a fraction of the cost and they speak decent English there. Hong Kong is a good option again, same as Japan but culturally different and hong kong being better than japan cuz they speak English there too.
Vietnam is very cheap, amazing and quite comfortable don't leave it out. India is... just ,well...India. Its a bit like marmite, I loved it but plenty of people hate it. Cant speak for Japan or Hong Kong. Hopefully ill go to Japan this year though so ill know better then.
They (Sheraton execs) know damn well how their Chinese hotels are. It's the norm in China, so they're not going to do anything about it. It's all about perception. If that is what a 5 star hotel is normally like in China, then that's just how it is. What if there was a country that thought that a U.S. 5 star hotel was crap? That's what the U.S. feels is a 5 star hotel, so they're not going to change the 5 star hotels in the U.S. to conform to the ones in that country.
This hurt Sheraton's reputation, Sheraton is a world wide company, unless this is a fake Sheraton, I think it is possible, because China can counterfeit almost any thing, may be Sheraton already pulled out and this hotel's owner simply kept their name.

Considered Huizhou is a relatively backward city in China (ranked 62 in China), in most major cities 5 star hotels should be much better than this one. Also, Sheraton is not really a luxury hotel chain in China, Hilton will be much better.

They do not bother about maintenance for obvious reasons. There is no artisan spirit in present day China, all is about quick bucks and branding huyou （忽悠）from consumers.... Shenzhen is alreading degrading from a mere 30 over years of development. The declining rate is astonishing! This is what u get when everything are monopolized by a government body who is afraid of open market and fair trade competition.... The super rich are already leaving, cos' they know they can get the real-world standard of qualities and services beyond the WALL... ADVC guys, don't try to alert em' to make things better, they won't give a hoot....
I've had a very similar experience in Beijing at a Holiday Inn. I know that's a budget hotel but it paled in comparison to its U.S. counterpart. I've also stayed at a Marriot and Four Points in Suzhou and those were actually very nice.
I stayed at the Howard Johnson Havana Resort outside of Guangzhou once, and it was similar. As was a Marriott in Shanghai. On the other hand, the Beijing Friendship Hotel - a four-star state-run hotel from the '50s - had impeccable interior and exterior, and a fantastic breakfast! I think a whole lot of it just depends on management, and when the hotel was built.
Ha ha _ great video! I had a company put me up at a five star hotel in London Mayfair. It was appalling! I would have got a far better experience at a three or four star that was putting in a bit of effort and not charging a fortune for every little extra - there were absolutely NO extras apart from the usual bathroom toiletries. No free tea/coffee making in the room. There was even an inflated charge for a jug of drinking water. Andy the service was super snooty - maybe I shouldn't have arrived with a backpack. A three/four star is a much better deal - more honest, better service and probably a more amiable clientele. And more likely to have freebies like a chocolate on the pillow and free coffee/tea/water. Totally enjoyed the video though guys, so it was definitely worth your money.

I went to a 5star in Shanghai cities center around 100uss each night and was awesome. The room bigger than my usa 1br apartment and the service was amazing. Much more beautiful than that room, Japanese smart toilet, livingroom and bedroom, shower box and bathrub etc

I am with Winston on this on , you have described every hotel experience I have had in 4 years going back and forth in Vietnam . That hotel very well could have been in Ho Chi Minh , Hanoi Halong Bay ...etc. .
Putting the aircon down to 5 degrees in a humid environment is asking for trouble. The cooling coils will freeze the water in the air and potentially block airflow through the coils so your cooling is reduced drastically.. As a result no aircon!! Don't go lower than about 18 degrees and as it cools down drag it up to 21-22.
That has got to be the worst Sheraton Hotel that we have seen except for Hawaii and that was a bit yuk have stayed in a few in Malaysia and Singapore very good so so sad thar you didn't get to stay in something really nice for your ***** stay 😟. Stay safe and enjoy great video in again
The Sheriton in Poipu Beach on Kauai was FANTASTIC!!! I stayed there 3 days and never wanted to leave. Every afternoon at 5 PM they had hula dancers perform and served free Mai Tai's. The main restaurant had absolutely wonderful meals. They had a private beach and a huge pool. I'll never forget those 3 days. Pure paradise.
I will say this. I moved to China as a teacher in 2014, knowing 0 about China. I didn't read a lonely planet book, I knew little about Chinese history and culture, nothing; I don't really even like 'western Chinese food' especially. And I certainly never saw an ADV vid/vlog. I think if I had, I may not have bothered. I've had good times and bad times here, and it's been a fun and interesting journey discovering it on my own. I'm glad I did my own way and hadn't met any cynical expats until maybe the third year. I'm not saying I disagree with the stuff you say, but I'm glad I never heard it at the beginning. All said, your vids often make me chuckle and that is a good thing.
I stayed at a 5 star Sofitel in Schenzen, as well as the mission hills hotel in the same place, then the mission hills in Hainan. I have to say I was highly impressed with the quality of the hotels and rooms as well as the plethora of meal options, one thing I found odd was that the drinks in the room fridge were cheaper than in the hotel bar, so we just got them to replenish the room fridge all the time.

It could be a 4 star hotel. However, if so, then they were LIED to about the hotel's rating in the brochure, or by travel agent, or the hotel's booking/webpage, which is also a Chinese trait (misrepresentation)
I'm normally a big fan of these videos, as a foreigner with 8 years of experience of living in China I think you guys have great perspective and knowledge. However, I have stayed at plenty of great hotels here in China- both Western and Chinese and I have to say you must have sought out this particular one of your videos. The one I stayed at last weekend was a great example of a beautiful Chinese hotel (Soluxe in Guangzhou if you want to check it out)- incredibly clean, palatial size rooms, buffet breakfast that served foods from all over the world-much nice than your cheese platter Winston lol and great facilities such as indoor pool, huge gym and sauna. It is true you can get 5 star hotels for a fraction of the price you would pay in your home country and for the most part you won't be disappointed.
Sorry to tell you that, International Sheraton experience was ended in the year 2015 and all members new and old got there membership cards to go Four Points by Sheraton from 2015 so, we Sheraton members are not allowed to go to Sheraton

I definitely sure they only focus on the crap things about China. There are tons of five-star hotels that are more attractive than this one. It has been common sense that the quality of high end hotels in China are much better than that of in US. If u travel both places frequently, u will know it.
I have travelled in China and all across America and I have only come across one high end hotel in China that comes anywhere near the high end American hotels. The last time I was in Manhatten we stayed at the Marriott on Lexington Avenue close to 49th street, far superior to the Marriott we have in Nanning. China really has no idea what a five star hotel should be.
substandard repairmen are not just in China. I had to have my phone jack (I'm still landlined) repaired and the guy came but fixed the jack in the back of the apartment, the one we don't use; he got angry when I pointed out he was fixing the wrong jack and refused to fix the right one (we finally had a friend come and do it). When the freezer in our refrigerator, only a couple years old, stopped working, we had the repair guy for that manufacturer come in with an attitude since he had to deal with a female instead of a male, spent hours looking and fiddling, then replaced the Freon thingy and adjusted the legs saying that the reason why the freezer had stopped working was because the door wasn't completely closing and sealing out the kitchen air. Problem was he made the legs in the front of the frig lower than the back legs so the door now swings open and you have to slam and then make sure the door has suctioned tight. Even to me, I pointed out that the front legs ought to be higher than the back so gravity helps make the door want to close all the time but the guy gave me the "if you weren't such an idiot I'd grace you with a reply" look. I needed to get on with my life so I just had him leave. Both the frig and the freezer doors always swing wide open when you open them, even if only a crack, and what the hell was that with replacing the Freon part except to charge a few hundred dollars for something that didn't need to be done? Our mailman too is Chinese (all these service guys have been late middle aged non-American born Chinese) and he tends to shove a bundle of those junk mail ad newspapers in our mail box to get rid of them, and if he delivers a package he'll phone but won't say squat, just heavy breathes for a few seconds. The work ethic is so horribly bad.
I'd recommend the Shangrila Hotel chain in China. As near as a 5 star hotel and service in China as you'll get. The food is definitely better 'much much' than that hotel there. Things generally aren't broken in the rooms, but standards and prices do differ depending on location. As for the Sheraton in Huizhou, I think you're paying for the view and that nice balcony.
A family relative of mine who's part of Human Resource Hospitality Association in Shanghai (can't remember the name exactly tbh) once told me Sheraton hotel's management was failing and falling apart. They can not compete with domestic Chinese brands anymore because Chinese hotels are much newer, much more luxurious and their target market aim not only at international /domestic business travelers but most importantly - Chinese couples. They are big percentage of the population, willing to spend money and they are the reason why some of those features in the hotel room exist as you see in the video. A quick tip for finding great hotels when traveling in China is to simply ask the locals (preferably local friend, if not find someone in luxurious shopping mall) which hotel they know has recently constructed and secondly which has the best hospitality.
In Malaysia, after the imposed alcohol tax and other stuff that i'm not really aware of, the consumer price of a pint of paulaner at MYR 25 (USD 5.92) is considered cheap.. i only got that price for purchasing in a bundle of 3 pints. Otherwise, they usually set you back for about MYR 30 (USD 7.10) or more for a pint of paulaner.
I was in the Crowne Plaza in Qingdao and had the same problem with my AC there. After a ton of yelling, complaining, and things of that nature, i finally found out that while i have an AC control in my room, it's not connected to the system, it was actually centrally controlled, so, it's likely that you have the same thing. That control panel doesn't do anything but tell you the temperature, and give you the impression that you have control over your environment. Next time, try Wanda.

Thing is, there isn't an international quality standard for hotel star ratings and they differ depending on local quality of life, location, et cetera. For example, a 5 star hotel in a remote city is probably more in line with a 3-4 star hotel in bigger cities. Comparing a 5 star hotel in a city like Shanghai to a 5 star hotel in a 2nd - 3nd line city in China will show the difference despite being the same 'star level'.
Marriott China Hotel in GZ is a proper 5 star only $120 a night with great breakfast and a proper electric blind on the window. The area they went to is a tourist area some months the hotels will have two guests sometimes packed out. Its hard to keep staff levels right and miles from any clubs and other places, This means you get the local untrained staff that cannot get jobs in the city 5 star hotels. Meals are expensive everywhere in that area. Plenty of new hotels in that area would recommend the Meridian its just been built looks great. Where as in the city's the staff are quite happy and better trained. You can get that quality of hotel in Shenzhen for around $30 easy. Plenty of good restaurants.

Same here. For the last 15+ years I live in the Netherlands, but I was born in the ussr, so I know very well what's going on there too.
If we take countries like North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, South Africa etc. out of equation as a special case and agree that no one should live there at all, only Russia would be the worse place to live than China. But those two powers are heading the completely opposite path, while China is notably improving and developing itself, Russia is degrading and hopefully falling apart.
Communism is evil, that's enough to say, because each and every country that has or had been contaminated with communism, must either heal or die. China is obviously healing, it still has a long way to go, but it is at least heading the right direction.

My condolences, ADVChina. I'm staying at a Sheraton hotel right now. It's not five-star, but neither was yours by the looks of it. I truly don't understand China's half ass approach to upkeep. Winston's description of breakfast was hilarious! The cheese platter and "bacon" had me LMAO! Prost, dudes! That was fun.
Maybe that's not a very popular tourist attraction and thus they just go cheap. Popular ones got tidier places. As for upkeep, well, let's say that many of these places might chose to build awesome things to get government support or just to get more stars to brag about. And then, well, the demand is not high enough and they have to go cheap.

It looks like a nice location, but that is definitely not a five star hotel. You would probably pay about $70-$80 (USD) for a room like that in the US. And even then, the room would be nicer. At least the AC and telephone would work properly, and there wouldn't be mold all over the walls.

I did the circumference of Taiwan in '92 before there were actual roads in many places. We were on dirt trails for a good portion. It was the hardest I've ever worked to have some of the best time of my life.
I know this is old and you guys aren’t even in China any more, but thought I’d chime in anyway. In my 26 years of traveling in China, I have found that there are two levels of star ratings in China, even under Western flag brands. There is the Chinese five star and there is the Western five star. There is a massive difference between the two. Often when the hotel is new, it is indeed a five star experience, but as many have stated in the comments, no maintenance is done after construction is completed in many cases. As the building deteriorates, so does service and everything else, but the star rating doesn’t. The exception is in some of the larger cities that cater exclusively to a Western audience and are under a premium flag. Then they seem to maintain a fairly good level. You will pay a large premium for that though. A true five star in a major city is as expensive as London or Manhattan.

I find your insights into China from foreign expats' perspectives are really interesting and I can't help but keep binge watching you channel. I know Mandarin/Cantonese/Fujian but I still find the differences between mainland Chinese and Malaysian/Singaporean Chinese amusing. Keep doing what you do mates! Love you guys.

Folks, I had a similar experience in the Sheraton Xinbei in Changzhou a few times. The first time I went there, it was almost new, the rooms looked nice and everything was fine, other than traffic noise which wasn't too bad given the location of the room. The second time, it was a disaster. The room was so hot, I called the maintenance man not once but twice. He said (like CmIlk) that the room was centrally set and I said if you can't fix it, I am moving out and will demand a refund or I'll write to SPG (the central chain for Sheraton, Westin, Meridien, W, etc) and complain.
So the guy scratches his head and makes a few adjustments, which apparently affect the entire floor. The temp went from about 27.5 degrees C to about 24.5, which was still hot and stuffy but not unbearable. Next day it went back to 27.5 degrees, and I moved out. I am also a lifetime gold card member of SPG and got a superficially nice club room but the temp was miles too high, and it was on a major intersection and the entire time I heard the traffic, and that involves constant horn usage, 24 hrs a day. If they had bothered to double glaze the rooms that could have been avoided.
Just to comment on the chains. The chains rarely own the individual hotel - they are operators, not owners. Sometimes the hotel is directly owned, particularly Hilton, but by far the most common practice is that they are privately owned and they sign up with a chain for a management contract, using their branding and marketing systems.
I have stayed in hundreds of Sheratons and other SPG properties and they are generally fine. I could also give you examples of disasters with other chains, though I do agree with one commentator that in Asia, Hilton are generally more consistent. But that isn't a blanket rule.
As a general rule in China, I find that the chain hotels in the second tier cities are not as good as in Shanghai for example, but even then, you need to check the place out (I use TripAdvisor) before booking. I also try and find hotels that are either new, or else have recently been renovated.
The comments about no maintenance are also partly true in the rest of Asia, and the locals often don't understand why you make a fuss about paint peeling off, stained and dirty carpets, or whatever.
Marriott properties in China in general are better than SPG, but there are not as many as SPGs and Hiltons.
Chinese people, especially those above 40s, do not like AC to be turned below 26 and I fucking hate that. The domestic flights sometimes get intolerably hot and there are still people asking for blankets.
Same apply to drinks, too. Many places will serve your soda and beer in room temperature.

I finished traveling in China with my mother. We stayed in "4 Star" or "5 Star" establishments. Winston's experience with the awful, undercooked bacon at breakfast was exactly spot on. AC in these premier establishments was hit or miss. Even in Shanghai.
When he mentioned the AC, I instantly remembered about 99% of the hotels I stayed at in China having had inadequate AC issues.
I stayed in a Chinese hotel, the extractor fan in the bathroom was a disgrace. It was hanging from the wall with wiring exposed. There was evidence that botched attempts had been made fix it with mastic in the past. I photographed it to show the reception desk. They showed complete indifference. The Chinese may well be building at an alarming rate but the quality is bad.
I.M. Pei, one of the most famous Chinese American architects who designed the BOChina tower in HK, also designed a five star hotel near Beijing not long after China opened up to the West. He wrote about his frustrations in his autobiography. Particularly when he went back to see it a year or two later, it hadn't been very well maintained, to say the least. If you want to vlog on this subject, then you need to go stay in the White Swan in GZ. I visited it in 1985, though we stayed in a guest house across the street. It was like an island of luxury, then even with its own self contained power generation facility. It's always been maintained to an international five star standard and was one of the first five star hotels in China. In the 1980s, local Chinese weren't allowed inside the White Swan. How times have changed. Now the locals are the ones with the money.
Great stuff guys. I really like the work you two put into your videos. It's certainly given me a better impression of China than anything I've ever seen or was taught back in school (US), and I'm almost 50 years old so that's a few years now. I like that your videos are frank conversations of life in China, and about the people of China. Most westerners just focus on the totalitarian government of China and its suppression of the Chinese dissidents, while they ignore the facts of daily life for the average Chinese citizen. You two make videos that don't make China out to be a utopia, but focus on the richness of Chinese culture, the lives of regular people, and you also bring to light the negatives that are a part of Chinese culture as well (The lack of caring about public property, the sometimes over the top nationalism, scams, etc.) without making it a preachy political bullshit opinion piece. Sorry this is so long of a comment. I hope you read it because I want you to know how much I appreciate the work you guys do. I'll end by saying fuck all those comments by people with their glass hearts and their shitty comments. Keep making videos. *:-)*
I feel if a westerner, or anyone non Asian for that matter, wants to experience Asian culture, India, Hong Kong, and Japan are the best options, India being the cheaper option. Japan is modern and capitalistic, so you know you're in one of the best places in terms of comfort. They have a lot of tradition too, so it's definitely going to be a great holiday. India has lesser technological development, but you get to see so many cultures there. Moreover, if you stick to big cities and 4-5star hotels, you'll have a great time here too. The biggest perk in India is they practically have most of the first world country's amenities for a fraction of the cost and they speak decent English there. Hong Kong is a good option again, same as Japan but culturally different and hong kong being better than japan cuz they speak English there too.

They (Sheraton execs) know damn well how their Chinese hotels are. It's the norm in China, so they're not going to do anything about it. It's all about perception. If that is what a 5 star hotel is normally like in China, then that's just how it is. What if there was a country that thought that a U.S. 5 star hotel was crap? That's what the U.S. feels is a 5 star hotel, so they're not going to change the 5 star hotels in the U.S. to conform to the ones in that country.
This hurt Sheraton's reputation, Sheraton is a world wide company, unless this is a fake Sheraton, I think it is possible, because China can counterfeit almost any thing, may be Sheraton already pulled out and this hotel's owner simply kept their name.

Considered Huizhou is a relatively backward city in China (ranked 62 in China), in most major cities 5 star hotels should be much better than this one. They do not bother about maintenance for obvious reasons. There is no artisan spirit in present day China, all is about quick bucks and branding huyou （忽悠）from consumers.... Shenzhen is alreading degrading from a mere 30 over years of development. The declining rate is astonishing! This is what u get when everything are monopolized by a government body who is afraid of open market and fair trade competition.... The super rich are already leaving, cos' they know they can get the real-world standard of qualities and services beyond the WALL... ADVC guys, don't try to alert em' to make things better, they won't give a hoot....

I've had a very similar experience in Beijing at a Holiday Inn. I know that's a budget hotel but it paled in comparison to its U.S. counterpart. I've also stayed at a Marriot and Four Points in Suzhou and those were actually very nice.
You should complain to Sheraton Headquarters, hope they see this and do a surprise inspection on that property

I stayed at the Howard Johnson Havana Resort outside of Guangzhou once, and it was similar. As was a Marriott in Shanghai. On the other hand, the Beijing Friendship Hotel - a four-star state-run hotel from the '50s - had impeccable interior and exterior, and a fantastic breakfast! I think a whole lot of it just depends on management, and when the hotel was built.
Ha ha _ great video! I had a company put me up at a five star hotel in London Mayfair. It was appalling! I would have got a far better experience at a three or four star that was putting in a bit of effort and not charging a fortune for every little extra - there were absolutely NO extras apart from the usual bathroom toiletries. No free tea/coffee making in the room. There was even an inflated charge for a jug of drinking water. Andy the service was super snooty - maybe I shouldn't have arrived with a backpack. A three/four star is a much better deal - more honest, better service and probably a more amiable clientele. And more likely to have freebies like a chocolate on the pillow and free coffee/tea/water. Totally enjoyed the video though guys, so it was definitely worth your money.

I went to a 5star in Shanghai cities center around 100uss each night and was awesome. The room bigger than my usa 1br apartment and the service was amazing. Much more beautiful than that room, Japanese smart toilet, livingroom and bedroom, shower box and bathrub etc

I am with Winston on this on , you have described every hotel experience I have had in 4 years going back and forth in Vietnam . That hotel very well could have been in Ho Chi Minh , Hanoi Halong Bay ...etc. .
Putting the aircon down to 5 degrees in a humid environment is asking for trouble. The cooling coils will freeze the water in the air and potentially block airflow through the coils so your cooling is reduced drastically.. As a result no aircon!! Don't go lower than about 18 degrees and as it cools down drag it up to 21-22.
That has got to be the worst Sheraton Hotel that we have seen except for Hawaii and that was a bit yuk have stayed in a few in Malaysia and Singapore very good so so sad thar you didn't get to stay in something really nice for your ***** stay 😟. Stay safe and enjoy great video in again

The Sheriton in Poipu Beach on Kauai was FANTASTIC!!! I stayed there 3 days and never wanted to leave. Every afternoon at 5 PM they had hula dancers perform and served free Mai Tai's. The main restaurant had absolutely wonderful meals. They had a private beach and a huge pool. I'll never forget those 3 days. Pure paradise.

I will say this. I moved to China as a teacher in 2014, knowing 0 about China. I didn't read a lonely planet book, I knew little about Chinese history and culture, nothing; I don't really even like 'western Chinese food' especially. And I certainly never saw an ADV vid/vlog. I think if I had, I may not have bothered. I've had good times and bad times here, and it's been a fun and interesting journey discovering it on my own. I'm glad I did my own way and hadn't met any cynical expats until maybe the third year. I'm not saying I disagree with the stuff you say, but I'm glad I never heard it at the beginning. All said, your vids often make me chuckle and that is a good thing.
I stayed at a 5 star Sofitel in Schenzen, as well as the mission hills hotel in the same place, then the mission hills in Hainan. I have to say I was highly impressed with the quality of the hotels and rooms as well as the plethora of meal options, one thing I found odd was that the drinks in the room fridge were cheaper than in the hotel bar, so we just got them to replenish the room fridge all the time.
When I went to Shanghai I stayed at the Howard Johnson at I would give it 5 stars.

I'm normally a big fan of these videos, as a foreigner with 8 years of experience of living in China I think you guys have great perspective and knowledge. However, I have stayed at plenty of great hotels here in China- both Western and Chinese and I have to say you must have sought out this particular one of your videos. The one I stayed at last weekend was a great example of a beautiful Chinese hotel (Soluxe in Guangzhou if you want to check it out)- incredibly clean, palatial size rooms, buffet breakfast that served foods from all over the world-much nice than your cheese platter Winston lol and great facilities such as indoor pool, huge gym and sauna. It is true you can get 5 star hotels for a fraction of the price you would pay in your home country and for the most part you won't be disappointed.
Sorry to tell you that, International Sheraton experience was ended in the year 2015 and all members new and old got there membership cards to go Four Points by Sheraton from 2015 so, we Sheraton members are not allowed to go to Sheraton

I definitely sure they only focus on the crap things about China. There are tons of five-star hotels that are more attractive than this one. It has been common sense that the quality of high end hotels in China are much better than that of in US. If u travel both places frequently, u will know it.
I have travelled in China and all across America and I have only come across one high end hotel in China that comes anywhere near the high end American hotels. The last time I was in Manhatten we stayed at the Marriott on Lexington Avenue close to 49th street, far superior to the Marriott we have in Nanning. China really has no idea what a five star hotel should be.
substandard repairmen are not just in China. I had to have my phone jack (I'm still landlined) repaired and the guy came but fixed the jack in the back of the apartment, the one we don't use; he got angry when I pointed out he was fixing the wrong jack and refused to fix the right one (we finally had a friend come and do it). When the freezer in our refrigerator, only a couple years old, stopped working, we had the repair guy for that manufacturer come in with an attitude since he had to deal with a female instead of a male, spent hours looking and fiddling, then replaced the Freon thingy and adjusted the legs saying that the reason why the freezer had stopped working was because the door wasn't completely closing and sealing out the kitchen air. Problem was he made the legs in the front of the frig lower than the back legs so the door now swings open and you have to slam and then make sure the door has suctioned tight. Even to me, I pointed out that the front legs ought to be higher than the back so gravity helps make the door want to close all the time but the guy gave me the "if you weren't such an idiot I'd grace you with a reply" look. I needed to get on with my life so I just had him leave. Both the frig and the freezer doors always swing wide open when you open them, even if only a crack, and what the hell was that with replacing the Freon part except to charge a few hundred dollars for something that didn't need to be done? Our mailman too is Chinese (all these service guys have been late middle aged non-American born Chinese) and he tends to shove a bundle of those junk mail ad newspapers in our mail box to get rid of them, and if he delivers a package he'll phone but won't say squat, just heavy breathes for a few seconds. The work ethic is so horribly bad.
I'd recommend the Shangrila Hotel chain in China. As near as a 5 star hotel and service in China as you'll get. The food is definitely better 'much much' than that hotel there. Things generally aren't broken in the rooms, but standards and prices do differ depending on location. As for the Sheraton in Huizhou, I think you're paying for the view and that nice balcony.

A family relative of mine who's part of Human Resource Hospitality Association in Shanghai (can't remember the name exactly tbh) once told me Sheraton hotel's management was failing and falling apart. They can not compete with domestic Chinese brands anymore because Chinese hotels are much newer, much more luxurious and their target market aim not only at international /domestic business travelers but most importantly - Chinese couples. They are big percentage of the population, willing to spend money and they are the reason why some of those features in the hotel room exist as you see in the video.
A quick tip for finding great hotels when traveling in China is to simply ask the locals (preferably local friend, if not find someone in luxurious shopping mall) which hotel they know has recently constructed and secondly which has the best hospitality.
In Malaysia, after the imposed alcohol tax and other stuff that i'm not really aware of, the consumer price of a pint of paulaner at MYR 25 (USD 5.92) is considered cheap.. i only got that price for purchasing in a bundle of 3 pints. Otherwise, they usually set you back for about MYR 30 (USD 7.10) or more for a pint of paulaner.

what bugs me is they always call up to check the room to make sure you didn't take anything from the room when you check out, even at a 5 star hotel.
I was in the Crowne Plaza in Qingdao and had the same problem with my AC there. After a ton of yelling, complaining, and things of that nature, i finally found out that while i have an AC control in my room, it's not connected to the system, it was actually centrally controlled, so, it's likely that you have the same thing. That control panel doesn't do anything but tell you the temperature, and give you the impression that you have control over your environment. Next time, try Wanda.
For almost 500 USD in Eastern Europe you can book a 3 star decent hotel for a whole week with everything included

When you guys pull up the lid of that fancy, shiny, warming tray I was expecting to see some type of delicacy underneath, but all of the sudden... peanuts!... I'm dying... I can't stop laughing ;)...
Thing is, there isn't an international quality standard for hotel star ratings and they differ depending on local quality of life, location, et cetera. For example, a 5 star hotel in a remote city is probably more in line with a 3-4 star hotel in bigger cities. Comparing a 5 star hotel in a city like Shanghai to a 5 star hotel in a 2nd - 3nd line city in China will show the difference despite being the same 'star level'.
Marriott China Hotel in GZ is a proper 5 star only $120 a night with great breakfast and a proper electric blind on the window.
The area they went to is a tourist area some months the hotels will have two guests sometimes packed out. Its hard to keep staff levels right and miles from any clubs and other places, This means you get the local untrained staff that cannot get jobs in the city 5 star hotels. Meals are expensive everywhere in that area. Plenty of new hotels in that area would recommend the Meridian its just been built looks great.
Where as in the city's the staff are quite happy and better trained. You can get that quality of hotel in Shenzhen for around $30 easy. Plenty of good restaurants.
