Judging by the Russian dash cam videos, people seem to love buying Ladas due to the self driving feature. Too bad that feature doesn't work well, as that is what appears to be happening in all the videos.
The whole Chinese economics is very impatient or say '浮躁‘. Many businesses are targeting quick profits without investing in research or development. Chinese manufacturers are no exceptions. They just copy exiting foreign cars, sometimes probably only the appearance and sell for profits. There are no stability tests or mechanical tests and inside those cars are simply all sorts of low quality car parts put together. This topic can be easily extended to 'the vacuum in the protection of patents and copyrights'---'Why would any company spend money in R&D if others can just copy my research results?'
Aside from the time the Engine blew up on the Hi Way, and that time when the wheels fell off, and that other occasion that the steering wheel came off in my hands, .......apart form those incidents I'm perfectly happy with my Chinese made car. 10/10 for trying !!
The second VW dealership you rode past was not for imported VW cars, it is the second joint venture company in China, FAW-Volkswagen, made in Beijing. That is right, there are two separate Volkswagen JV companies in China making alternate models in the VW range. For example, FAW-VW makes the Golf model in Changchun and Audi cars, while SAIC-VW makes the Polo in Shanghai and Skoda vehicles. By the way, that car company you could not recognise with the Winged 1 logo is for the original FAW company, the original Chinese car company, thus First Auto Works FAW.
I had same question as why if China were as powerful as I heard so much about (at least economically) there weren't Chinese made cars in western countries. Now I know, thanks.
What more scarier is how Chinese drive. For safety wise, I really think if you spend same money on a Chinese car, you will get the same quality. But people always prefer cheapest one. In china, drive is like fighting, no matter what kind of car you drive. you may get killed.
I got to admit, this is the best and most entertaining content I have seen on youtube in a long time. I like SerpantZA videos, but the concept of driving bikes in China is very interesting and informative. I really hope you guys keep pumping out the videos, it is the best content I have seen in a long time.
most of those cars are 10 to 15 years behind for emissions and would add thousands to bring to north American standards it also costs millions to get each model certified. china will be the biggest polluter in a few years because of that.
"Great Wall" is another Chinese brand sold in Aust. I've only seen Great Wall small trucks/trade vehicles (maybe it's a sub-brand of one of the others and only offers trucks/trade vehicles), and I've only a few of them, but they are around.
My partner and I both own Chery J3's (A3) we love them, styling from italian studio Pininfarina, they handling fairly well, safe ( we know first hand, involved in a collision and kept us safe, so a bought another) and i really like the lack of road profile, keeps people guessing and makes it special, although I've seen a few others driving arou d the northern suburbs of Melbourne, I was actually looking forward to the Chery Arrizo 5 coming to Australia, but no new RHD Cherys.

alexaescht Haval is the only manufacturer out of those that I would call respectable. Watch out for their trucks in another 2-3 years - they're starting to get it going!
This year, my wife (chinese) and I bought a new car. She was adamant not to buy a chinese car. She felt chinese cars are too low in quality. We ended up buying a Hyundai.
thanks for the interesting topic. Just to clarify all foreign brands be they German, Japanese , French, Korean are joint venture productions with in most cases 100% local content of components, i.e. everything is produced in China. Beijing has not permitted any fully owned company by a foreign car / commerical vehicle maker. Many tier one and tier two automotive systems / component suppliers also are likewise in China to supply their auto maker customers from local production and some supply the chinese makers too, at least for some models. As you know only very high end or special cars/ vehicles are completely imported from foreign production as for now e.g. Porsche, Merc S-Class or the Maybach or most of the Merc SUVs , Ferrari etc. The luxury tax and import duties make these cars far more expensive in China than in western countries. A VW or SKODA made in China at any of the several VW plants has the same international quality as the same model produced at a VW plant in Germany or Slovakia or USA. The same applies to the locally made Merc C and E Class and BMW 3 and 5 series (JV with Brilliance). VW group has two different jv partners for example Shanhai VW started with the Santana that was never a success in Germany in the 70s and the other jv partner in Changchun made the Audi 100 later A6 Chinese version with the longer wheel base for more passenger legroom in the rear. ( same longer wheelbase models also for E Class Merc and 5 series BMW). All local chinese makers use modern production / automation equipment like jointed arm robots , machine tools etc. as any western or northern Asia (Japan and S.KOrea) plant would do. QC systems are mirrored from the TS /ISO standards, 6 Sigma continuous improvement system, as well as Japanese Toyota derived production process optimizations (Kaizen, Lean) with just in time or kanban supply of components to the car makers assembly lines. Chinese makers have also hired quite a few top experts from GM/Opel or VW management background, this mainly to create models for exports into western countries as the long term goal. Sorry for the many word. Cheers guys
yes way that is so for a number of years now. The old Santana was continued mainly for taxi reasons, that is an old technology yes with many facelifts and updated engines. That vehicle would not be anywhere else available apart from China. All other models are only slightly adapted to the Chinese market and absolutely have the same reliability and performance as the ones built at other assembly plants worldwide, be they Puebla Mexico, Chatanooga USA, Woilfsburg Germany, Bratislava Solovakia in Spain under Seat brand or S.Africa etc. The same can be said for the french makers PSA (Citroen / Peugeot that hugely invested and expanded their Wuhan factory) as well as Renault/NIssan, all the other japanese makers Mazda, Honda , Toyota that are traditionally clustered in Guangzhou area. Mind you japanese makers usually have international models adapted to the local market. But the quality is the same level as other models built in Japan for the domestic market. For VW for example the US Passat is not the same as the European Passat, it was desiogned specifically for the US customer and the road / speed requirements and the price target to compete in the US with Hondy Accord and Toyota Camry for example.
Chinese built cars by local makers are appearing in many developing countries of eastern Europe , Africa , S:E: Asia., as well as south/central America. Some high end ones have made test launches even in Europe and plans are there for the North American market. China is already building huge infrastructure projects in many parts of Africa, as well as supplying trains and busses for example. Many of these technologies are of course derivatives of licenses from western partners, as in the case of the so called local high speed trains in China.
do you know how many foreginer car's expert are working in China today ? do you know how many Chinese brand automobiles were manufactured in China every year ? 15 million , every year ! note ! I never seen any Chinese brand car has break down on the road ,at his over 100 vlogs . did you seen ? I also never seen any garage full of Chinese brand car I think the quality of Chinese brand car is very very good today
NONONONON, NO Chinese car so far. I remember 10 years ago, we laughed at Chinese phone, but now I love my Huawei. Maybe in another 10 years, they can make decent cars too.
Here in New Zealand Great Wall sells quite a few utes & SUVs. I considered one when I bought my current Toyota ute, but while I was at the dealership I saw a current year ute that had about 20,000KM on it and the seat was falling apart - completely worn away at the seams. I just kept walking and counted myself lucky :-)
Wrong on the comment about Japanese made stuff back in the day. I owned a 1972 Honda CB175 motorcycle and a 1979 Honda accord as well as a 1976 "Marantz" Stereo that were all made in Japan and definitely superior to any products made anywhere in the world then or now. Those and other vintage Japanese products are very desirable. You'll never say that about today's Chinese brands in the future.
They did not have the quality they have today, they dominate, a much more competitive world market. The problem was they did not have the durability, the cars would rust away in states where they salt the roads. American car of that time were complete POS.
right . japan wasnt bad per se and they included a lot of standard features on their new car but their steel wasnt up to snuff. However, they have improved materials later on in the 80s when they owned the production top to bottom.
what people meant with "back in the day" is their product after WW2. Only about after late 50s the quality of japanese product began to improve, in which pioneered by Toyota (if I am not wrong).
Isuzu Buyer "a 1976 "Marantz" Stereo that were all made in Japan and definitely superior to any products made anywhere in the world then or now" "The first Marantz audio product was designed and built by Saul Marantz in his home in Kew Gardens, New York." "2001, Marantz Japan acquired the brand from Philips and owned all overseas sales subsidiaries." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marantz Sounds quite American and Dutch to me. The Japanese copied and improved on the original, the Chineses appear to rip off and ruin the original :(
I owned a chinese made Chevy Malibu for 3 years and had no problems at all. Just gas and oil changes! Actually it looks assembled better than american ones. It was so perfect that i sold it for only a few thousand RMB less than what i paid for it 3 years ago!!!and after a long wait I just got my new chinese Honda Civic turbo. Construction quality is not as nice as the Malibu but it drives so much better!
A car made in China is a Chinese product, period. Even Though the brand itself is not Chinese. The same applies to the iPhone. Anything else is an arbitrary distinction, because if you factor in R&D even blatant copies of murican vehicles become murican vehicles, since r&d has been done in the USA.
Red phoenix There a difference. With products like iphone, westerns quality and durability is strictly followed. Real chinese companies follow chinese crap quality
One of the few things about China that I'm not proud of. China was once a place of innovation, and isolation under Mao has damaged that culture greatly. It only opened itself up to modernization 30 years ago and I understand the need to catch up with the rest of the world, but to see so many lots filled row by row with lazy fakes and potential death traps is a real shame. I think all that metal could be put to better use.
Actually China lost innovation in the Qing Dynasty, when the arrogant emperors prevented trading and locked down China from within. After that China had never been the same.
I think killing and enslaving all the teachers, educated, rich, and business people finished innovation in china. there is a thing called institutional knowledge, sum greater than its parts. so you can train brilliant engineers, but they make the mistakes that if older engineers were around could say we tried that and this is why it didnt work
Not just make copies, China needs to build innovative cars that actually compete globally. Korean cars were a joke when they first went to America, but after 10 years people realized they hadn't needed repairs they gained respect. Then they could invest in more research and development and now they compete against the big dogs. But I guarandamntee you, if the air conditioner breaks 3 times? Or even once? Just give up. The first rule to gain respect is reliability. Not so much anymore as all cars are reliable now, but they weren't fairly recently. The airbag doesn't count because they were across manufacturers.
Aliex Simth: The truth is, with the very low labour costs in China - they really ought to be able to produce a much better quality car (even for their domestic market), but still at a much lower cost than overseas-made cars. I feel that China is doing both itself & its people a great dis-service, by churning out such vastly inferior cars, when it ought to be able to do better. And it is doing immense damage to its country's manufacturing reputation in the meantime. I don't think anyone is expecting a Ferrari quality car from a Chinese manufacturer. But it would be good if at least they could produce a decent, safe, sturdy, reliable car, that was not going to break down frequently - even during any "warranty" period (assuming there is such a thing as a "warranty" on these Chinese cars).
I had a Lifan 320, and it was a good little car. I drove it 67.000 km in two years without any problem, just the normal service. Cheap to buy and cheap to run.
few years ago, Great Wall Ute/tradesman's car was quite successful amongst the Australian local tradies, they are cheap and suit most needs. But then asbestos were found in the AC vent, and you wonder why Chinese themselves don't buy Chinese cars.
Yes I remember that I think the asbestos was all over the car... Brake pads, a/c vents etc Killing your customers with a slow, agonising death is not the best marketing ploy
It certainly doesn't help their reputation still, and asbestos is still very very bad to be inhaling. The really dangerous part of asbestos is it wont hurt you right away, it highly increases your risk of mesothelioma among other diseases and cancers, that will affect you later in life. I've heard people try to claim asbestos isn't dangerous, like it's a liberal lie, but it is very dangerous, it is dangerous when it's inhaled. If the asbestos isn't breaking off into the air, it wont harm you, but a car vent sounds very bad, because that is a lot of air flow! If China doesn't want the bad reputation, they need to prove they have safety regulations in place to prevent this sort of thing from happening. To us in the west, China's market just sounds like an unregulated free for all.
i worked for a chinese brand before, changan is the best chinese brand, design and quality wise close to korean car level, haval have some suv products selling pretty good but the quality is still soso, chery and geely have some interesting products. a minivan brand called baojun sells really good, like 50k units pro month. and the top 10 chinese car brands sells abroad, tens of thousands pro year, mainly to middle east, africa. south america. the chinese brands which dont have their own engine would use autherized Suzuki engines. in the electric car market, chinese cars are working well, low tech, sells good in the big cities thanks to the policy.
Those BYD (Build Your Dreams) e6 taxis are used in Brussels, Belgium for 2 years. They were used in most major cities in Europe (with a max of 50/city). Never got in one of them, don't like taxis, and those are mostly driven around the city centre/touristic/financial areas. Thanks for the video :)
GEEK CHANNEL! Hi guys, i love your videos, but sometimes I want to see more of TECH stuff, in particular motorcycle stuff. I think I m not the only one!
Yea Serpent you can deal with it (being in a Chinese car) because you haven't been in a bad car accident yet. I've been in a bad head-on collision, and was glad for the safety and structural features the car had. Was it totaled? Yes. Was I alive and relatively uninjured? Yes. You choose what matters most.
I've been in bad car accidents in the past, not in China, but that's because everyone drives really slowly here and I'm a more experienced driver than anyone here
Great video ! I agree that most Chinese cars from the last decade were rubbish but these days, there are a growing number of well-engineered Chinese cars. It is not surprising because many Chinese car companies hire foreign talent or ex-employees of Western or Japanese car companies. Some are rich enough to buy whole companies. I think that Chinese cars will become very popular in the future, especially in developing countries. But the copycat Chinese companies will not survive, only those which invest in long term gain and real R&D will prevail.
LOL, real R&D. :D To be able copy a car, you need as much competence as to create said car. To say those companies will not survive is like claiming there will be no demand for cheaper knock-offs in the future which is a non sequitur.
it is way easier to copy then to invent something. try invent a new legit looking Disney character. and then to a side by side copy of a real one. then look which one looks best.
If they learn their techniques with a college degree in a foreign country and go back to China to be engineers in a car company, that's NOT called copy-cat. Stop invading China and start behaving yourselves, foreigners, and you will see China back to its innovative glory again.
no.. there is one in indonesia.. cherry panda 5 years ago here.. and none of them ever exist anymore.. cause the quality is shit. i am chinesse but i prefer japanese car
Djone Tan Indonesia is a shithole so naturally, China wouldn't export their best cars there. Funny thing is Chery makes OK cars now, like the Arrizos. But who cares about Indonesia?
Bought a Great Wall X240 3 years ago, never given any problems, drives well, quality is ok and it has a 4 star safety rating. So I would recommend it if anybody asked.
Good job guys. This a good piece. I'd imagine you guys can get deeper into this whole car subject in China. Especially with the new EV laws there, there must be a big movement on that direction. China has access to a huge reserve of minerals to make batteries. In fact, I'd love to contribute to that if you guys are interested. I've been in the automotive business and have worked for a Chinese company in the past.. (never again tho haha) Oops, gotta be positive here.. lol
In April 2009 Reuters reported that the company's partnership with Mazda, by then ended, had been established "to receive technological help" and that Haima was selling a car that seemed similar one of Mazda's offerings without consent.[10] In November 2010 a plant for the assembly of knock-down kits of the Haima 3 was opened in Cherkessk, Russia by Derways Automobile Company.[7]
I can't believe that the crash test video quoted at the end of the video is so old, if my memory is right, this test was done about 8 years ago. And China does has crash test, which is called C-NCAP, using the standard similar to the European NCAP.Hey man, most of your videos and Winston's videos are unbiased, but this one is absolutely bias, and misinforming the people who don't understand much of the Chinese car industry.
Toyota single handedly drove the quality movement in automobiles. They are the reason we have cars that can go 250,000 miles. That was unheard of in the 80’s.
FYI: Air pollution, especially ozone, really kills rubber. Los Angeles used to have that problem really bad in the 1960's, the tire manufacturers had to add a tougher synthetic rubber to the mix to keep tires from shredding themselves very quickly.
BIG correction: even most sold Audi BMW and Mercedes in China nowadays are joint venture, let alone toyota, honda, nissan, vw, etc. They are all made in China. Baidu them if you wanna know more. 合资品牌汽车
I've had my Luxgen U7 for 5 years now. Only had two problems. Alternator stopped charging and last month my clock spring had broken. Both really quick fixes. After watching your video I decided to look up the crash test footage. Lots of footage, but I can't find an ASEAN NCAP report for it.
Bryan McHugh i think by memory buick was one of the few first foreign brands to tap into the chinese car market. so when the first people got rich in china thats what they bought and it had a good image when others seen rich people driving them. i remember seeing wealthy people driving buicks just before i left moved to australia in early 2001
well more and more chinese are going to know the the buick is a old brand and uses old chassis. But the Buick in China is quite different from in Am, i remember 4years ago they exported the first few hybrid car in China.
The former Borgward car manufacturing company, based in Bremen, Germany, was founded by Carl F. W. Borgward (1890-1963). It produced cars of four brands, which were sold to a diversified international customer base: Borgward, Hansa, Goliath and Lloyd. Borgward’s Isabella was one of the most popular German premium models in the 1950s, while Lloyd’s Alexander / Lloyd 600 model offered affordable mobility to many working-class motorists. The group ceased operations in 1961, following controversial insolvency proceedings. The brand was revived in the 21st century, with the Stuttgart-based Borgward Group AG designing and marketing cars manufactured in China.
I remember a few years ago there was a news frenzy over a chinese car *finally* passing an EU test, saying that they will try to enter the EU market soon, I guess that never happened because I've never seen one And I've seen crazy-ass shit like "street-ready" go-karts!
Wow, about 20,000 murican dallas for a Suzuki Swift in China. Suzuki is actually primarily a cheap compact and sub-compact car brand. The import tax must be immense.
worry, 2018 oct price a swift 1.5L MT about 10,400 USD (include tax and insurance) see link below suzuki is a yesterday brand in china, no people buy it . they quit china market in 2018 as they did in US. jiage.autohome.com.cn/price/carlist/p-27105#pvareaid=2094115

Car salesman: "Do you want me to put Toyota badges on it? 200 RNB." Winston: "Nah, I'm not gonna pretend it's something that it's not." Car salesman at the dinner table to his family: "You won't believe what I had today. There was a foreigner who was so embarrassed about not having the money for getting the Toyota badges extra that he made up an excuse to save face. ... Said he's not gonna pretend it's something it's not." Wife (laughing): "So adorable. Good excuse though. I might use that myself if the opportunity arises."
Here's my take on Chinese cars (or products in general). Back in the day when Japan and then South Korea were moving from low to high quality, each stage was from lack of resources, but they continued to strive for improvement. They took the long view, and put pride into their products even before they were up to snuff. Chinese companies on the other hand have a complete disregard for making a quality product, there's absolutely no long term view. They have no problem pirating EVERYTHING, at the same time no remorse if they make a product that actually kills people (lead paint in kid's toys, toxic materials in clothing, fake food & medicine, etc). Just take a look at scooters. The quality of ROC (Kymco) scooters has been improving considerably over the years, yet PRC (Lifan) scooters continue to be SHIT!
Even in the US, Lifan small engines are pretty popular in some classic Japanese motorcycle circles. They are cheap and will work reasonably well if not better than the original - given that the original engines we are talking about are 40+ years old or so. The Chinese really can't screw up a motorcycle engine. I sure as hell would not want to buy an entire vehicle made by them, though.
Vehicles were exported to several markets, including Australia, and New Zealand; ten were sold in Malaya. Borgward Hansa Isabella Saloon. Borgward Isabella Cabriolet. Borgward Isabella Combi 1959. Borgward Isabella Coupé (2+2) Borgward Isabella Cabriolet (2+2) Borgward Isabella TS Saloon 1961. Borgward Isabella P
Most of the brands in the vedio are low-quality and not welcomed by average chinese , to be honest , their sales are really bad. However, There do exist good-quality chinese cars, such as Haval H6 (which sells 300000 cars per year) and Geely GC9 (which shared the same designer form Volvo), i wish you guys can make a vedio of driving test. ua-cam.com/video/QUzEkej6HiQ/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/6zMmdufglC4/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/ydKh24p_6FA/v-deo.html
I couldn't help to notice your ignorance on some facts. JMC is not a knock off of GMC, it stands for Jiangling Motor Company. Haima is not a knock off of Mazda, it's from Hainan Mazda, a joint venture formed by Hainan motor and Mazda years ago. Dongnan is not a knock off of Mistubishi, also a joint venture. Borgward is a German brand, bought by Chinese company Foton last year. I suggest you to do some homework before you shoot and post the video. Your comments on Chinese cars are based on your assumption that all Chinese cars are either copy cat or low quality, then you ride your motorcycle on the streets looking for proof, not based on facts. The copy cars pictures you showed are at least ten years old with the exception of Landwind. Why you didn't make any comment on the original Chinese cars like Borui or Trumchi. Overall, your video is missleading.
If JMC isn't a knockoff, then why is the name and the badge almost exactly the same as GNC? Just a coincidence I guess. Also GMC stands for General Motor Company. So 2/3 of the name is exactly the same.
Hello Gentlemen, Just come across your video’s and have really enjoyed (and subscribed) them very much, keep up your good work. I live in Australia but from Ireland originally and I just wanted to let you know we have at least half a dozen “Chinese” brand cars here. At the moment they are being advertised quite aggressively and being seen on the road from time to time. I drive a V8 Toyota LandCruiser 4x4, cost new Aus$100,000+ it’s Chinese equivalent (use of the word “Equivalent” being very insulting to Toyota) unsure of the name of it but it’s less than half the price and I’ve heard it drives like a brick ! Look forward to more of your work as I shall be revisiting China more often, now that I have retired, Cheers. ☘️
I think you folks are too unfairly criticized... In fact some of Chinese domestic car factories make pretty good vehicles such as BYD and HAVARD SUV. Ok, I have to admit that local manufactures are still growing and improving the technology. However, don't you folks think your AMERICAN BUILT are absolutely perfect? It's NOT! FORD originated from COPYING from GERMANY cars!!! AND with no offense. But you guys should absolutely improve your personality and attitude. You are showing your poor personality in this video by saying "rubbish" and DISCRIMINATING words! Feels like, I can't tell. Maybe it's a common scenario that some of western guys like you folks in CHINA are feeling superior to Chinese people. I just don't understand how, and why?! Please be respectful. Again, RESPECTFUL
Yes I think you are correct. I am a retired American engineer living in Laos and have been watching the influx of more Chinese products of all sorts. Some are very good, but some are still shoddy. The same was true of early Japanese and then Korean products of 50 and 40 years ago, respectively. I think the quality of Chinese products will improve over time as Chinese buyers become more affluent and discriminating.
+Yongbo She Both of these guys love China and if you watch their other videos, then you will see that. In America we’re able criticize American companies or products without it hurting our national pride: for example American public transportation sucks. In true Western fashion these guys are just “calling it like they see it.” As of right now Chinese cars aren’t as good as European, American, or Japanese. But that doesn’t mean I’m 10-20 years from now that China could make very good cars. Trust in the process of your country learning and growing.
Matt B they hate China, they are faking their love for China. I had watched many of their videos, they only compared it to some American brand for you to feel like they love China. They cannot work in China, their wives families hate them so they hate China, too.
I could watch your Videos all day! I wasn't much into China before but the way you guys explain Things makes it very interesting to watch. Also i have a question, at the end of the Video in the first drone shot the drone was following you, who was steering it? Or does it by itself? Really cool anyways
Borgward was the parent company of four brands of East German cars, of which I have owned two non running Borgward Isabella coupes (that I never got around to restoring) and a fully functional LLoyd 600 (but of far lesser value). Borgward went out of business somewhere around the mid-1960's, decades later (2008) the brand and logo were brought back by an international group with branches in China, Russia, India, Brazil and Mexico. The engineering and design of Borgward Group products is German, so there's a good chance they're a cut above average.
3-4 years ago, Brilliance was all set to enter the EU market. The cars were shown at the Brussels auto show, deposits were taken from prospective buyers. All that was left for deliveries to begin was the formality of passing EU crash tests, which the manufacturer assured the importer the cars could do. You know the rest, the cars not only failed, but they failed miserably. So much so, that in order to save face, the Chinese started circulating footage of the cars successfully passing their own crash tests. Of course, when watching slow-motion footage you can't tell if the car was travelling at 100km/h or at 30km/h...
I love how in the end, when you’re doing your drone outro, it looks like there’re a bunch of guys coming out of the nearby shops to scold you for operating your drone XD
as a routine visitors in china i must admit you got big balls to drive a motorcycle there. china is really safe country, but not the road. i always pick public transportation and walking everytime i visit china, the public transportation really good there.
I own the geely X7 been with me 3 years now no major issues so far. Spark plugs ,fuel filter , air filter still going strong and its a copy of the 2007 rav4.
Actually guys , Brilliance was sold in Germany & Belgium (about 8 months ) but they were all bought back after an insurance company demanded crashtests & the BS6 model ripped in half on the test ... However , some brands are sold in Italy & Bulgaria these days ...
Our company invested a significant amount of money to put equipment in to support & prepare for Chinese mandate to install air bags as mandatory manufacturer requirements. In the very near future (1-2years) all new model cars will have to have air bags to protect car owners.
For those who might find it interesting:Borgward was a german luxury auto brand from 1939 til the 60s. They were really good and the design was legendary when it came to "out of the box".The went bankrupt in the 60s.
I'm an Aussie and drive a great Wall suv. theyre not bad. parts r cheap as theyre part mitsusquishy Triton part Holden rodeo. it's All about the price bro
I had a gear shifter failure, like Winston described, back in 1986 or so, in a 1978 Fiat 127. Called the auto club, the guy crawled under the car and put it in 4th, and I managed to limp to the shop and get it fixed. The repair was cheap, equivalent of $40 in 1986 money. I'm actually impressed that China is producing cars that are comparable to 1980 European cars. They got to that level pretty quickly, and if they keep up the effort, they'll probably be able to compete on quality within another decade.
Matt Eaton Two cars that go for six or seven years, driven about the same number of miles, both without any serious problems except for that one. Yeah, that is the same quality level. But please, don't let me stop you from being condescending! Go ahead and share how *you* would define quality level.
When Great Wall pickups first appeared in the uk I was quite interested due to the good long warranty, but after the test drive I really, really didn't want one and was quite disappointed as the price (of course) was good (though nowadays your looking at about £18k) and I'd hoped they might have copied at least *some* of the quality of western pickups but unfortunately not. Since then I haven't seen a single one on the road. It drove like a 1970s vehicle really.
OMG lol, I love your channels, that being said, if you were to drive so recklessly like ya do in the video, in the states, you would be losing your license lol :)
I like how the changan badge is just a slightly altered upside down Acura badge 😂😂 I work at an Acura dealership in Canada and it's the first thing I noticed when I went to China lol
PRE VIDEO. Yes, there are good chinese cars such as the Geely Borui (or GC9), Qoros 3, Luxgen 3, BYD Qin & the Song, and the Dongfeng Fengshen A9. POST VIDEO. Almost everything you said I agree with for the safety part. Most chinese cars this days are very safe. Chinese cars like the already mentioned Qoros 3 already passed the Euro N-Cap safety test with 5 stars and a Best In Class award. The Geely GC7 got 4 stars in the Euro N-Cap. Idk what your definition of "passing the safety test" but to me the Qoros and the Geely both passed the safety test.
The echo from the communicators being near makes it kind of sound like you two are blaring your opinions of Chinese cars as loudly as you can.
Same in Russia. One would only buy Russian car when nothing else possible.

Judging by the Russian dash cam videos, people seem to love buying Ladas due to the self driving feature. Too bad that feature doesn't work well, as that is what appears to be happening in all the videos.

"If you're in a Chinese car I hope you liked and subscribed BEFORE the ACCIDENT"
you should have said this
The whole Chinese economics is very impatient or say '浮躁‘.
Badly copied. See the crash resistance tests in the video. Poor engineering, poor material & metal choices, poor workmanship, etc.
Things get much better now.
That says allot about chinese culture. It is simply a criminal mindset that isn´t sustainable in the long run.
japanese have been during the same for thousands of years, copying from the Chinese, and then the Americans during the Meiji Restoration.
I thought Chinese are patient when It comes to business.
Shit quality and ridiculous brand names also helps with that.
Even Chinese don't like Chinese cars. lol
Who can blame them? They are shit.

I love the Borgward. They went out of business in WW2, or soon after. It used to be a luxury car brand like Mercedes.
Those crash test videos are scary!
What more scarier is how Chinese drive. For safety wise, I really think if you spend same money on a Chinese car, you will get the same quality. But people always prefer cheapest one. In china, drive is like fighting, no matter what kind of car you drive. you may get killed.
Get killed like 80s car.
Next to the u.s. miltary with their 700 global bases they are. Yes.
In Australia we've got Haval, Foton, MG and Chery among others. Haval make decent cars, but the others are pretty bad and they don't sell very well.
Oh, never seen any in Melbourne.

Cheers guys
that huge explosion at the chinese port showed acres and acres of burned cars waiting for export. they must go somewhere.
yes way that is so for a number of years now.
I have a friend in Namibia and she said south african built cars can not use the OEM parts for their respective brands, they just dont fit.

Here in New Zealand Great Wall sells quite a few utes & SUVs. @@cooliipie Stop complaining, the quality of Chinese cars is crap, end of story.
Isuzu Buyer a twin boss?nice can picture it.
what people meant with "back in the day" is their product after WW2. Only about after late 50s the quality of japanese product began to improve, in which pioneered by Toyota (if I am not wrong).

"a 1976 "Marantz" Stereo that were all made in Japan and definitely superior to any products made anywhere in the world then or now"
"The first Marantz audio product was designed and built by Saul Marantz in his home in Kew Gardens, New York."
"2001, Marantz Japan acquired the brand from Philips and owned all overseas sales subsidiaries."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marantz
Sounds quite American and Dutch to me.
By the way, now I can say Chinese made Hondas are not as good as Chinese made GMs
Red phoenix
There a difference. With products like iphone, westerns quality and durability is strictly followed. Real chinese companies follow chinese crap quality
you do realize that pegatron and foxconn have a second line of qc done by apple's own employee's on sight part of the supply contract
You say about Chinese vehicles in the west, well Great Wall sell trucks in the UK and you do see them on occasion.
Yeah I see this other Chinese brand of busses for school
One of the few things about China that I'm not proud of. China was once a place of innovation, and isolation under Mao has damaged that culture greatly. It only opened itself up to modernization 30 years ago and I understand the need to catch up with the rest of the world, but to see so many lots filled row by row with lazy fakes and potential death traps is a real shame. I think all that metal could be put to better use.
Actually China lost innovation in the Qing Dynasty, when the arrogant emperors prevented trading and locked down China from within. After that China had never been the same.
I think killing and enslaving all the teachers, educated, rich, and business people finished innovation in china. there is a thing called institutional knowledge, sum greater than its parts. so you can train brilliant engineers, but they make the mistakes that if older engineers were around could say we tried that and this is why it didnt work
+goodby guy that was part of it, but Mao did the most.
傻逼dumb ass
Not just make copies, China needs to build innovative cars that actually compete globally.
Korean cars were a joke when they first went to America, but after 10 years people realized they hadn't needed repairs they gained respect. Then they could invest in more research and development and now they compete against the big dogs.
But I guarandamntee you, if the air conditioner breaks 3 times? Or even once? Just give up. The first rule to gain respect is reliability. Not so much anymore as all cars are reliable now, but they weren't fairly recently. The airbag doesn't count because they were across manufacturers.
Why people want to pay 1/20th to buy a Chinese car and ask it for a Ferrari quality ?
Good question. Only a dumb and greedy want a good quality and Payless. It never happened on Earth. Only a dumb ass crying like a child.
People ain’t askin for Ferrari, just something that won’t fall into disrepair after a handful of months
I had a Lifan 320, and it was a good little car. I drove it 67.000 km in two years without any problem, just the normal service.
Cheap to buy and cheap to run.
DI ZAZZO i bought a Chery Tiggo in 2014 and use it in Dubai. No problem so far. Cheap to buy and cheap to run.
I know life has to move on, but I miss these ADV days.
few years ago, Great Wall Ute/tradesman's car was quite successful amongst the Australian local tradies, they are cheap and suit most needs. But then asbestos were found in the AC vent, and you wonder why Chinese themselves don't buy Chinese cars.
Yes
I remember that
I think the asbestos was all over the car... Brake pads, a/c vents etc
Killing your customers with a slow, agonising death is not the best marketing ploy
Using the broad brush on Chinese cars does not make any sense. Asbestos is not guaranteed death. It is just said to be a dangerous substance.
I search the news online, not found in the AC vent, but in engine exhaust gaskit.

i worked for a chinese brand before, changan is the best chinese brand, design and quality wise close to korean car level, haval have some suv products selling pretty good but the quality is still soso, chery and geely have some interesting products. a minivan brand called baojun sells really good, like 50k units pro month. and the top 10 chinese car brands sells abroad, tens of thousands pro year, mainly to middle east, africa. south america. the chinese brands which dont have their own engine would use autherized Suzuki engines. in the electric car market, chinese cars are working well, low tech, sells good in the big cities thanks to the policy.

I've been in bad car accidents in the past, not in China, but that's because everyone drives really slowly here and I'm a more experienced driver than anyone here
This is among the most interesting channels on YT! Thank you for making this, and keep up the great work!

First, Haima isn't a mazda knock off, It's acronym for Hainan Mazda which bought the Mazda production line several years ago.
In April 2009 Reuters reported that the company's partnership with Mazda, by then ended, had been established "to receive technological help" and that Haima was selling a car that seemed similar one of Mazda's offerings without consent.[10]
In November 2010 a plant for the assembly of knock-down kits of the Haima 3 was opened in Cherkessk, Russia by Derways Automobile Company.[7]
Thanks for showing us the Chinese domestic cars. Very interesting. Never seen them up close and with explanation like this.
I can't believe that the crash test video quoted at the end of the video is so old, if my memory is right, this test was done about 8 years ago.
合资品牌汽车

for some reason the Chinese cannot get enough Buicks. Buicks sell out in China the second they hit the lot
Bryan McHugh i think by memory buick was one of the few first foreign brands to tap into the chinese car market. so when the first people got rich in china thats what they bought and it had a good image when others seen rich people driving them. i remember seeing wealthy people driving buicks just before i left moved to australia in early 2001
agreed. I have got to give Buick credit here they are pumping out some top shelf stuff lately.
China's last emperor loved Buick's and therefore was the first car ever to be owned by an emperor. So they have long been looked at as status symbols
well more and more chinese are going to know the the buick is a old brand and uses old chassis. But the Buick in China is quite different from in Am, i remember 4years ago they exported the first few hybrid car in China.

Is it the luxury factor?

DJI drones are made by Chinese company and engineers.
+DavidRsaid haier, huawei, zte, lenovo. Here you go
They make cup noodles
Even in the US, Lifan small engines are pretty popular in some classic Japanese motorcycle circles. They are cheap and will work reasonably well if not better than the original - given that the original engines we are talking about are 40+ years old or so.
The Chinese really can't screw up a motorcycle engine. I sure as hell would not want to buy an entire vehicle made by them, though.
Borgward was East German. I wonder if they will steal names like Steyr (Austrian; defunct) or Hispano-Suiza (Spanish; long-gone).

I have been driving my Chinese car for about 6.5 years. It's still running great... though lots of things have broken.
Thanks for your insight on Borgward. My second car, back in the mid 60's was a 1958 German Borgward.
Scott Morton how old are you?
If JMC isn't a knockoff, then why is the name and the badge almost exactly the same as GNC? Just a coincidence I guess. Also GMC stands for General Motor Company. So 2/3 of the name is exactly the same.
S SK isn’t the Trumchi a rehashed Rover?
*Ben Civiletti:* _"Also GMC stands for General Motor Company. So 2/3 of the name is exactly the same."_
- Do you know what BMW stands for?
Yongbo She China needs to spend money on R&D instead of going after quick profits and sales.
Really cool anyways
why are the jmc trucks not allowed in the city is it the same all over china
Yeah, I was waiting to hear why too.
NO EMISIONS,,,,VRY HEAVY DIESEL SMOKIN JOE'S CAFE,,,,,,BEEP BEEP
In the video there a load of car sales next to each other, it's hard to choose 😂,great video and stay awesome.
16:11 Grand Theft Auto 1 view :D
Borgward was the parent company of four brands of East German cars, of which I have owned two non running Borgward Isabella coupes (that I never got around to restoring) and a fully functional LLoyd 600 (but of far lesser value). Borgward went out of business somewhere around the mid-1960's, decades later (2008) the brand and logo were brought back by an international group with branches in China, Russia, India, Brazil and Mexico. The engineering and design of Borgward Group products is German, so there's a good chance they're a cut above average.
8:08 um yeah
3-4 years ago, Brilliance was all set to enter the EU market. The cars were shown at the Brussels auto show, deposits were taken from prospective buyers. All that was left for deliveries to begin was the formality of passing EU crash tests, which the manufacturer assured the importer the cars could do. You know the rest, the cars not only failed, but they failed miserably. So much so, that in order to save face, the Chinese started circulating footage of the cars successfully passing their own crash tests. Of course, when watching slow-motion footage you can't tell if the car was travelling at 100km/h or at 30km/h...
I like Chinese car. Not all bad.
I know a bunch of Saffers and I love their direct honesty. Love you guys
why is everything that's made in china so bad?
lokustic iPhones and Samsung phones are also made in China, Are they really bad? You get what you paid for
Di Chao but theyre not chinese brands. what i really meant is chinese brands that were made in china.
DJI drones, Huawei smartphones are also made in China, but are not as bad as you think.
You Jin why dont they give a shit? dont they wanna make a product that they can be proud of?
Weihua Shi DJI is pretty good yeah ok theres at least one. other chinese companies should strive to at least become like DJI.
I love how in the end, when you’re doing your drone outro, it looks like there’re a bunch of guys coming out of the nearby shops to scold you for operating your drone XD
THIS VIDEO IS TYPICALLY A BBC SPONSORED ONE
as a routine visitors in china i must admit you got big balls to drive a motorcycle there. china is really safe country, but not the road. i always pick public transportation and walking everytime i visit china, the public transportation really good there.
Looks like my Sony camera in its leather case? Love your series-I have learnt so much. Greetings from Tasmania Australia 👍😁🇦🇺🦘
SO... because both cars snapped a gear linkage cable they are both on the same level quality wise? LOL WTF
Matt Eaton Two cars that go for six or seven years, driven about the same number of miles, both without any serious problems except for that one. Yeah, that is the same quality level.
But please, don't let me stop you from being condescending! Go ahead and share how *you* would define quality level.
Euro and Chinese cars are both crap. Japanese or American are the only way to go.
Those crash tests near the end is terrifying
That crash test was crazy
