This was a really scary game to me when I was a kid. I'm sure the difficulty of it all added to that feeling. I never did get into playing as the Raptor though that much, probably would have been less frightening. I haven't really touched the game in 25 years or more other then to boot it up just hear the awesome Sega T-Rex roar. The game's graphics still look impressive/good to me though.

    Oooh, controversial opinion time.
It's definitely a flawed game, but I think the things it does well, it does really, really well, like the graphics and the scope and size of the levels. It's more a game you play for the experience and wow factor rather than a concise, strictly qualitative affair.

A little surprised that there wasn't any footage of the more action-y parts of The Lost World. They feature some really impressive pseudo-scaling effects, and probably the single best Jeff Goldblum sprite that will ever be made. They have this wonderful demo scene feel to them, like the entire purpose of The Lost World was to get those sequences in with the rest of the top down exploration parts just to pad out the playtime.

I loved it as a kid but it definitely has flaws. It basically suffers from really bad jumping mechanics and the first couple of levels had some bad level design.
But they really nailed the feel of the movie. The graphics are good and the dinosaurs look and sound exactly like the movie. The levels are varied enough in look and sense of adventure. The animations are great as well. I love the door kicking animation from Grant in the last level.

I completely agree with you. JP is distinctly average with lots of awkwardness in the controls and levels.
The one time it all comes together is with Grant in the visitor centre. Running down the halls, being chased by Raptors, and booting open doors, along with the perfectly suited music is what the whole game could have been.

The Genesis games are great and captures many elements from the book. It suffers lag in the first one, mainly the first level/jungle but was corrected and fixed in Rampage for the most part. Just like most Retro games in that era it was pretty tough but beatable. I find these two games to be better than most movie based games.

Hi Kim, great video as always! Forgive me if you mentioned it and I missed it, but incase you didn't realise, the Lost World Megadrive game has some absolutely incredible "3d" sprite scaling/rotation levels that are some of if not the most impressive graphics on the system - more akin to an early 32 bit title, or a far more powerful arcade machine, like Sega's own lightgun shooter JP1 game. An examples of these levels can be seen in these videos: v=xr03931gXCE , v=N2hODbUecqU , v=87XSAih_KgU

The slow down and the controls will make you want to pull your hair out. But once you get a feel for it, it isn't so bad. Have better memories of the first game, considering it was one of my first Mega Drive games. After 5 years of the NES, the Mega Drive was like a stealth bomber in my living room. The music, graphics, game play all seemed light years ahead of the NES. I admit it was a tough game, but being stuck with 3 games till the next holiday it was mandatory to complete games before we got more. Took the difficulty on the chin and accepted the challenge the game presented. Rampage felt more like JP on steroids. Completed the game on the first weekend. Have never played the third game. Had graduated to the PC Gaming Master Race by then.

Great video. Burning the family house down would have been a humorous reaction for failing to beat Jurassic Park. I agree with alot of what you said. I owned this game back in the day and it was very frustrating. I really enjoyed it because I was so into the atmosphere at that time. I used to work on it with a friend. That said its a very mediocre game. At the very end of one of the campaigns the game suddenly throws an obscure puzzle at you for the final boss. I remember I had to call Sega to find out what the fuck to do. The game had no remotely similiar puzzle elements at all so this was not expected.
The sequel, Rampage Edition was a complete freakshow. It feels like they just slopped together previous assets of the first game and threw enemies everywhere. The stages were all maze like and cumbersome to navigate. You can see the level of quality by the thick black outlines on all the characters. Like they couldnt even bother to crop that shit out properly, just shit the game out. I did a tutorial on the game here, with commentary :
    ua-cam.com/video/MzWeEHzo2O8/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TheConsoleKiller

In a way, the story of Jurassic Park and Aladdin almost feels like a kind of microcosm of what was going on in Western game development at the time. Jurassic Park is an example of the interesting failure that so many western developed side scrollers were in the 8-bit and early 16-bit games: games like the Beast trilogy, or even Another World. Games that were incredibly ambitious and tried to push the envelope, but ultimately fell short when it came to the established expectancies of console gamers when it came to a game's basics - the controls, quality of life issues, and the general flow of the gameplay, things Japanese developers generally felt more proficient at. At the other end of the spectrum is Aladdin, a western side scrolling game that manages to match the ambition of western game design at that time, with a great execution of the basics: good control, good ebb and flow of the gameplay, substance to match the pretty graphics and great atmosphere. Western game development was changing drastically at the time, and the story of Blue Sky, Jurassic Park, and Aladdin sort of feels like an annotated version of that change: Jurassic Park showed where Western game design was and had been, and Aladdin showed where it was going.

@@turrican4d599 I fully agree with Kim's review of Beast. It was a hugely ambitious game, with an incredible atmosphere and great artistic design. But the first two Beast games ended up stumbling over their own ambition by not having gameplay that matched the game's visual and sonic artistry. Also like Kim, I would say Beast 3 is by far the best game in the series in terms of pure gameplay, even though the fact that it was released several years later meant its graphics (which are still gorgeous, don't get me wrong) didn't have quite the same wow factor Beast 1 had back in 1989. I also love the Beast games, but mainly due to the graphics, the incredible music, and the game's amazing atmosphere. And a good dose of nostalgia too, I have to admit.
I would say Turrican is a good example of another Western designed game where ambition was matched with solid gameplay. It's a great series. And one that preceded Aladdin by several years.

Hadn't heard about that Aladdin, Blue Sky made the right choice, forcing Sega to make the better business decision. That's fair opinion, JP must have been a rush job since it definitely janky throughout, licensed game and all that. Likely a mistake the dual campaign of human and dino, each only gets 50% of the time resources that way, enough of an idea for a separate game. Despite the problems me and my cousin played the crap out of it, I think we even beat it, no controllers broken heh.
Ah the 90s when developers got insecure about game AI for no discernable reason and then went down expensive rabbit holes that rarely paid off. Lesson learned, fun yes, smart not necessarily, and there isn't CPU speed left over for this advanced AI lol.
Despite the pitfalls of GEMS and being a western developer Blue Sky was definitely top tier developer, objectively not the embarrassment others were.
JP:RE is pretty sweet, a great example from the era of a developer actually taking all those complaints and trying to make good on it rather than just telling fans to STFU. Lol guns blazing yep, kind of like Alien 3, people just want to blast things, certainly the one I'd suggest newcomers play.
Depth contrast isn't widely understood concept as even today with new retro on Steam you'll see incredibly noisy messy graphics that blend together. It's relatively simple to adjust color contrast between parallax layers but most just use the same color contrast on every layer/depth. :\
Yeah my JP fever was pretty cool by then so I never played LW. Simply amazing graphical effects on display in those bonus stages. The top down part is the main game but a shame you didn't show that extra stuff.

Correct me if I am wrong about one thing always bugged me: the story/scenarios of these 3 games. They're obviously borrowing visual inspiration from the movies, but I think the scenarios and the journey itself are taken from the books not the movies. The river stages are definitely based on the first book (which I read) with Rampage Edition being an upgrade and expansion. The Lost World game - apart from the looks of its human characters, Raptors, Stegosaurus and Triceratops - is nothing like the movie and we play as Roland Tembo and Ian Malcolm working together to fulfill the missions which I always thought are based in the events from the Lost World book, but I never read this one to be sure.

Just watched Cinefix's What's the Difference between TLW Book and Movie and got my answers. The Raptor chase scene on a bike in the forest is taken from the book and the Baby T-Rex and Capture missions also. Nothing was mentioned about hovercraft/antennas, cave rescue, Trex car fight and rafts (this is from the first book) missions.

just letting you know binge watching your videos is getting me through this work day. I quite liked this version, I just wish there was more of a stand off with the T-Rex but I much preferred the Master System version over this

Thank god. I hate the thing. And rampage edition. Everyone bangs on about how brilliant it is, and even the reviews at the time. I found it a poor man's flash back, and additional being colour blind I could barely transverse the levels initially as the colours are so confusing.

Thanks, great video. Currently I'm torn between getting actual games, a flash cart for my megadrive or getting a Raspberry Pi. I have a feeling though, that if I do get the Pi, I'll never sit through a full game again due to the sheer overwhelming choice; let along struggling through average games like JP.

Gross. No it wasn't, it was even worse than the Genesis game. It was just the master system version with a generic character. The game only basically had 1 song. Game Gear versions of anything are never fantastic....I've had every Sega system and I'll never get the "love" for Sega games, besides a short few they're all games made to be beaten in 15-20 minutes for 50-60 bucks.

    • @alexh2790
      @alexh2790 3 роки тому +1

@@lutherheggs451 It was a competent action game which is more than can be said for the Genesis one. Probably one of the best games for it's platform. At least you can beat it before the batteries die.

@@BlUsKrEEm Yeah I would've loved to see what the team behind the gg games would have done with a 16 bit title. The lost world game takes 20 minutes to beat and has more varied (and tighter) gameplay ideas than both genesis games combined.

For me....when it comes to JP games.
    1. Thats 1997 The Lost World: Jurassic Park arcade ( way too many £1 coins spend on that bastard)
    2. operation genesis ( thou I will admit thats rose tinted retro specs)
    3. Jurasic world evolution.
TBH the 2015 aracade shooter looks good...but never saw it in the wild and never played it. But you know....time and emulation *shush *
