    Kudos to you, Chris! One of your most admirable qualities is your willingness to let people see the real you in a lot of situations. It takes confidence, integrity, and humbleness to do that on this type scale. Please don't change or give up if/when people are cold and critical, because I assure you there are many, many people out here who appreciate your transparency. God bless you, and stay safe 😉

      Thanks so much for the kind words man. Yeah I try to always stay transparent and disclose mistakes along the way. Sometimes it stings depending on what people say but the longer you do this kind of thing the more you just brush it off and don't care what people think. Mistakes happen. Some people make more than others.

    Glad you and the garage are ok. One time cutting plow mounts off of a dump truck I caught the grease and oil that the old diesel had been leaking on fire. The garden hose was winterized, I didn’t know what the hell to do. I ran into the house and grabbed cup fulls of water to calm it down before realizing that wasn’t going to come close to enough, ran inside, turned the water valve on, luckily the hose was hooked up, and doused it. No real damage, just an eye opening experience. Next day went and bought a big high quality fire extinguisher, and now whenever I see them at the dump, as long as they are reasonably not out of charge I pick them up. I’ve got a little collection of 5-6 in the corner of the garage now. Even when their out of charge, they normally still discharge fine.

    It happened to me while cleaning fuel injectors :
    I took the fuel container outside FIRST to not aggravate the situation by adding inadvertedly combustible to the fire.
    Then i walked fast without running to get the fire extinguisher.
    I learned that you have to separate combustibles from heat/spark sources at all time.
    I learned that you need to have a clean environment without bunch of stuff in the middle in your working area.
    several maintained fire extinguishers easily accessible are a necessity,like a water source nearby.

    Shit happens!
    The good part though is now every time your grinding from now on you'll always remember what happened and analyze the surrounding area better. Similar thing happened to me years ago with wood dust and shavings all over the floor, after that I paid a lot more attention.
    Glad nothing really bad happened!!

    Great little video. We've all done similar stuff, so you've probably saved a life if one person upon going back in their garage has a tidy up. Good man. I once had a sudden fire in my workshop. I was heating an engine casing to accept a bearing and some residual brake cleaner I'd not realised had puddled lit up and set a load of stuff on the bench alight. I keep a powder extinguisher on the side of my tool chest and after first near sh*tting myself I pulled the pin on this thing and sprayed it for like, one extended blast. Probably not two seconds. Put the fire out great. But OMG for the next two years I'd be getting parts and stuff off the shelf on the other side of the workshop and there was powder on them. The best thing about the powder extinguishers is that the powder gets EVERYWHERE quickly. The worst thing about them? That the powder gets EVERYWHERE quickly :)

      @@nnkhmiscI totally get it but these things happen. I once had a small fire start when i was welding a nut onto a broken bolt in a block and lit an oily rag on fire nearby. Got it out but it was a reminder to stay vigilant. Most of us who work in our garage likely have similar stories. Andrew Camarata definitely has a few good ones. This video was an important reminder. Love your videos.

    That brings back memories, not good ones tho. I am a welder / fabricator and I built the biggest stage in the worlds biggest night club (Privilege on Ibiza island Spain) when the stage was completed I was welding a few last bits with my screen down, someone cut their finger and came to use the firstaid box located in that area, I checked everything was safe and far away from my work area before welding some small pieces, the person who had a cut finger took isopropyl alcohol from first aid box and used the end of my bench to treat their wound leaving the open isopropyl bottle open and a soaked cotton swab, I didnt hear them or know anything until Boom and 6 foot high flames. Now shouting fire a few people came with extinguishers and all was good again in seconds, no damage and we never discovered who the person was who treated themselves. True account!

    I have a real fear of uncontrolled fire. Funny story but not, years ago my uncle and I were doing a first start on a mud truck. Had a fuel line running in to a 5 gallon gas can. With excessive cranking, the carb was flooding over and the valley of the engine was full of gas. When it finally fired, it backfired through the carb and it lit up. I started running for the door, with my uncle shouting, where tf are you going! I was outta there lol... He started cranking it again and it sucked the fire in to the motor and all ended well. Fast thinking on your part, that could've been really bad!!!

    With extinguishers two is one and one is none... They're cheap enough and can really save your bacon when shtf. And size does matter too, the small bottles don't last that long so it's necessary to take aim and think before acting. Also keeping your garage/workspace clean will help prevent accidents like this. It would also be a good idea to plan your work so you always have a way to get out if something happens, it's not fun to run over flaming puddle of oil to get out or get the extinguisher.

    but always have the water hose as back-up always get the hose ready save your house and property an extinguisher isn't always enough. before you burn even grind put all your fire stuff hose extinguishers on stand by before you work and wait around 45 minutes after any grinding and burning. i saw many jobs where guys didnt wait around and a smoldering fire was started. they didnt see. and it created a fire after they left. twice in my tenure i was stuck with the mess of guys being careless and had to put the fires out

    by the way you can use water just spray the flames not the base get a feel for it like you did when spraying the reaction of the spray on the fire you did good. i always use water. and that dry chemical it the worst c02 is best but water will work. i used to work at isg plate Conshohocken grease every where and we used water just be carful when doing it like you were doing it., that dry powder is the worst and dont breath it i know some one who was in the hospital for weeks messed his throat and lungs up

  • @dangates3022
    @dangates3022 Рік тому

    first of all you have a cluttered work space. and all burning welding and grinding you should have a fire watch, what the fire watch does is wet the area down when possible and always has some kind of fire suppressant at reach. you did good though didnt panic. but i assume you were having thoughts of every thing you owned was going to be gone and your neighbors thoughts what they would think. as you were scrambling. glad you were okay but in the future you need to do that out side away from the shop when you dont have a fire watch. as a millwright industrial mechanic with decades of demo and mechanical experience take my advice. if a fire watch isnt available than you should do it out side open area with any combustibles' at least 10 feet away

  • @dangates3022
    @dangates3022 Рік тому

    just remember when you burn grind weld there should be time set a side to get your safety shit together and then time set a side to wait after for any smoldering. if there isnt enough time dont do the job dont take chances
