Usually when I play slide guitar, I'm in an open tuning like Open G Spanish or Open D Vestapol. But, every now and then, I find myself wanting to play a few slide leads in standard tuning.
If you haven't tried it...give it a shot! It feels comfortable (if standard tuning is your usual) but also different since the slide definitely changes things up.
This mix of new + familiar is a great breeding ground for new ideas.
But their are a few things to keep in mind as you play slide in standard tuning. We'll get into a few tips plus dig in and learn a soulful slide lead.
Good luck and...
Play On!

More slide in standard tuning !!!!!! Absolute love this video. THANKS
Thanks, Mike. Happy to hear that and I'll cook something up :)
Agreed! More standard tuning! Fantastic!
John, I absolutely love what you play at the beginning of this lesson. It's beautiful. Great lesson! Thank you John for putting this together for us. It's much, much appreciated!
Thanks so much, Steve! I appreciate that, you made my day 🙌
I've never seen someone play behind the slide. Cool technique. Your lessons are excellent.
Thank you so very much for your great explination of this. I knew about the triads but not the lifting of the slide to play behind the slide. Thanx again.
You got it! I really love that slide technique.
Excellent. Very well explained. I learned more in the first half of your video than all of the others I've watched combined. Keep these standard tune slide videos coming. I'm def a subscriber.
Glad it was helpful!
A fantastic slide lesson in standard tuning! Thank you John!!
Glad you liked it! Thanks!

Very nice lesson, thank you
Thank you! 😃
That's cool...👍🎶🎶🎶
Thanks 🙏
love you!
Thanks :)
Absolutely brilliant lesson!
I had to do a triple take at the beginning of the video, couldn’t figure out what I was seeing. Realized it was that you were playing slide but not using your resonator!
I really like how you keep changing and improving the on screen displays, you’re really making these videos look fantastic and more informative as well, with the little notes etc. I also love the dedication to referencing previous lessons for more depth and color on some aspects of what you are covering.

Again, brilliant lesson John! As always wishing you the best! 🤠
Thanks so much for that, CC! I can't take credit for the bump in vid quality though, that's my editor, Flo :) Appreciate the feedback on the visuals 👍
I just recently got into Ariel posen. He kinda got me hooked on playing slide in standard.
Oh wait that's an Ariel posen slide you got on there!
Same :)
Eres el mejor 🇨🇴🇨🇴👍👍👍😀😀
Muchísimas gracias, Diego!
John check out the "edge slide" from stubby slides. I have a feeling you'll dig it. It's all I use now. It's designed to mimic a pocket knife like Willie johnson. Really different style and took me a few days to get used to but real game changer for me.
I just checked that one out on YT. Very cool. Love some Blind Willie Johnson so I dig that he is the inspiration for this slide.
Excellent stuff on all your videos. Still catching up from first Tuesday!
Have you done any Bo Carter songs? I bumped into "All Around Man" which is a hoot, and there are several different tabs online. Great song if you can look into it for your fans :-)
I had an accident that broke 3 bones in my fret hand ,it totally destroyed my ability to play like I did before my accident so slide is my new best friend, if you love guitars as much as me please take care of your hands
Another great video. Why did you change the slide from ring finger to pinky?
Two words: Ariel. Posen. :) I love the way he plays fretted notes behind the slide and having the slide on the pinky helps make that possible. Cheers, Keith!
can you able this backing track for us? and very nice work, bro! just continue.
Hey, Pedro! Thanks so much for your comment. This track is available to my paid members...
pro tip : you can watch series at flixzone. Been using it for watching a lot of movies during the lockdown.
@Finn Forest yup, been watching on Flixzone for years myself :)
it has gp file ? thanks
Yes, for myBGI members I give the pdf and Guitar Pro files. Thanks!
what kind of slide are you using
Hey Ramon! It's the Ariel Posen signature Rock Slide.
@@BluesGuitarInstitute I was wondering if that was a rockslide
I'm considering one of those and a Rocky mountain "whiskey barrel" ceramic.
Since I go between acoustic and electric, I like having the different tonalities that are available with those
Great lesson, I keep a lot of your lessons in my playlists
@@shadowulf thanks, Allen! I have a Rocky Mtn that I love too.

Leave in the fret buzz. That is the acoustic trying to talk. That is its voice. It's like your accent. Im sure if you worked hard at it, you could perfectly emulate that Hollywood blandness without even thinking about it. But why would you want to?
Unless you are a studio musician... The studio is the Hollywood of music.
