Complete mastery of the instrument. Steve is the benchmark..
Highland Wedding is one of the most beautiful and powerful songs I've ever heard!
For me, a song that deserves the price of a CD is Ghostwind...
@@marktheelf53 also a great song, High Tension Wires" is a great album!!
My wife and I used Highland Wedding as part of our wedding ceremony! 😉
@@goodun2974 you folks are people I'm sure I'd be glad to know 😉 may you have a long happy and wonderful life together 👍
@@aschule5684 , thanks!, 25 years married, and lived together for several years before. I took her to see the Steve Morse Band on our second date ---- not because she was into that type of music particularly (it's still a little outside of her usual listening choices) but because she had an unexpected night off from work (hospital, 2nd shift), knew I was going to see SMB with friends, and wanted to see ME. About a month later I took her to see John Hiatt on the Perfectly Good Guitar tour and she instantly became a huge fan. We made up cassette tapes as wedding favors, and included a lot of guitar players, including Adrian Legg, Martin Simpson, Jerry Douglas, John Hiatt, Sonny Landreth, Debbie Davies, Steve Morse, and some Irish and African music. Years later we're still together,, and people tell us they wore that tape out in their cars, so we must have picked well! 😉
Who the hell is TALKING while Steve Morse is playing? I’m listening on headphones and still shushing everyone in my house!
exactly..idiots
Pennsylvania, not known for being culturally respectful or correct…
More renowned for being loud mouthed a- holes…. I’m from there, I left… long ago…
May God give MORE life and health to Steve Morse…
There's a "god" and it gives things to people?! How strange; you'd kind of think it would be big news.
I know Steve is a monster player, but plz don’t forget about Dave Larue, what a bass master!
Don't forget Van Romaine either...incredible drummer!
Actually one of the things I respect about Steve Morse is. He surrounds himself with great players and let's them shine in the music they all create together.
I took some long-distance bass lessons from Dave about 20 years ago - such an awesome guy
Behind a great band, there's usually a great drummer!
Looks like Liberty Devitto
Steve, thank you for enriching my musical life for more than 35 years!
For sure...mine too. Steve is an absolute monster legend.
For me too..i have a picture with Steve in my lounge and i'm very proud about it!!!
In addition to Steve’s playing, flying and farming, you couldn’t find a nicer guy. He’s a true gentleman. (Btw, I also have a photo of me and Steve in my living room, which I show off anytime I have another guitar player in the house.)
Steve Morse is simply fucking amazing. Nobody who composes that beautifully should also be able to play that virtuosically, and vice versa.
These fellows are full of grace, majesty, and mastery, pulling it off right before your very eyes. What an example for anyone no matter what you do. I saw Steve with Deep Purple years ago, a conscious awakening performance for Steve and DP. He hasn't let up delivering the message of hope, truth, beauty, and goodness with his masterful ability and creativity. Welcome to another world, a higher world, Steve's world, and his amazing band of music, a light in the storm! 🎉🎉🎉
Steve, you are in fine tune with God! Thank you, and your great band! 🎉🎉🎉
Wow!
Your words summed up his music and the man perfectly!
Many thanks!
I'm a huge Steve Morse fan, I found out about his playing when I was 14 (1998) reading a interview with John Petrucci in a guitar magazine.
So naturally I had to go out and find every CD of his I could. Then I found his old REH video and it changes my approach to alternate picking.

Never commented on UA-cam about anything, but as a Steve Morse fan since the first Dixie Dregs album, Free Fall, I have been enamored with his extraordinary talent. To have a video of him in what I think is essentially his prime, technically and musically, with Van and Dave is priceless. Thank you for the upload. Can't stop watching! I think Van works out everyday. I would be exhausted after just one or two songs playing like that. Yet he never overplays in my humble opinion. Also, the one of the most unique non-pocket pocket drummers I have seen. I realize that being with the SMB gives him that luxury; I am aware of his resume and haver seem them all live. But there is something very unique about his drumming. And is there anything left to say about Dave on bass? Whew!
@ tbrtt I completely agree with your comments with one exception. I would only add that Dave LaRue is a monster. His creativity and logical explosions while soloing are as good as it gets. A personal favorite. Regards
Voted Best Overall Guitarist so many times they had to create a new category.
@@ronaldelliott4373 LaRue is a monster too.
Rid Morganstein, after Ginger Baker & Keith Moon, took that 'implied backbeat' to new levels. I was lucky enough to see the original Dixie Dregs (and, much later, SMB). Morganstein was unlike any other drummer. Still, he and Van can lay down solid backbeats if that's what's called-for.
Such a joy to hear these great musicians do their thing.
And what a great thing it is!....
Steve always surrounds himself with virtuosos, and he is one of the greatest rock composers of all time, not to mention a guitar god extraordinaire.
Steve is a brilliant musician, yet so humble, friendly and accessible. I met him at the Double Door Inn in Charlotte (mid 70s) with the Dregs. My band was trying to gig there. His playing and approach led me to some serious wood-shedding!
This is great, and Vin & Dave are monsters! 👍
See my above. Same experience with a great human being and superhuman guitarist. Also the violin guy too - and I forgot the bass player was playing too and the drummer was smashing on the side of the pool table! I've not told that story (fully true) in decades. Was a classic! Have a good one!
What a freakin awesome opening: Summertime Blues, My Sharona, Freebird! And cut together perfectly! Genius. Leading into his own classics. Wow
Don't have to go looking around for the "perfect" Dregs/SMB show anymore..... this night was it.! One Stop Shop!
So this is The Steve Morse band opening for The Dixie Dregs ? I think i recognize Rod's drumset. Wow !!! Steve and Dave pulling double duty. 🙂👌🏻
He's doing it again in May 2024..!!! I'll be seeing him in NYC.. Can't wait.
Funny, I saw Steve Morse band open up for Kansas where Steve was their lead guitarist. Lucky to be front row center. Best shows Ive seen were in small intimate settings. Such talent
@@sydnoids1 That must of been incredible.. 👍
I'm actually probably Steve morse's biggest fan I'm a singer used to be a Pianist classical thank you for posting this this is wonderful
He is a MONSTER. The best show of SMB I've ever seen. Pure gold
steve is one of the greatest composers of the fusion/prog era. his writing is so brilliant. and he found the perfect partner in the great Dave LaRue.
Even as fabulous as he is...he was smart enough to know..if I want to reach another level..I need to study..he did and it shows
49:46 Drum great shot.😎👍
44:17 The guitar string is broken, but he's still soloing going, my God.👍
just like the pro he is .... drop solos down an octave and work thru it .... loves ya Steve.
I was at this show! It’s awesome to see it again.
Yeah he is just unfuckingbelievable. Such a monstrous talent wielded with such skill.
I can't believe how many people were talking during the duets.
Seems so disrespectful! And they missed some of the finest music of the night! Was it free beer night?
That's how it goes. Once the bass and drums stop grooving, people go full ADHD.
@@nukes27, I've seen the Dregs, Steve Morse solo, and SMB many times, but never personally experienced this level of crowd disrespect; but when I saw Jackson Browne and David Lindley playing magical duets together, the audience was yakking loudly or calling out for other songs, and it wasn't the type of music that could drown out the crowd. Jackson chided the audience: "You're calling out for some really old songs; I guess this must be the Valley that Time Forgot". (Jackson by himself is kinda boring, but I loved Lindley, and Lindley's mutant reggae-rock band ElRayo-X opened the show ---- you just haven't lived until you've stood up against the stage and heard Lindley playing his electric lap steel through a Dumble amp from ten feet away!)
Absolutely killer all the way through! Not a dull moment. Always loved Steve Morse. One of the very best.
Except that bloody audience! 🤬
Coolest meddley ever. Steve Morse kick's ass big time!
This is Morse at his peak, both musically and definitely technically, prior to his well known right wrist/hand issues. Same could be said of Dave and Van. They seem to be at the top of their “collective game”. Fantastic post. Many, many thanks.
I don’t have enough room here to rave about how amazing these men are, and how cool it was to see the highest level entertainment with nary an iPhone in sight…we called those “the good old days”!!! 🙌🔥❤️🎶
Masterful performance! Thank you all!
What i like about the dreggs and steves band is how to me they play music not songs.Much of the time His music takes me somewhere i havent been and cant go back there untill i hear it again.
Thank you so much for this upload of which every second is a musical jewel.
Que maestro, este tipo. Una dulzura, un gusto para tocar!!!
I didn't see this show, but saw this tour. This was SMB and Dixie Dregs and I saw them in Charlotte around this time in 2005. The best concert I've ever seen.
YES! The Steve Morse Band!! So killer...What a great show... man, Steve took that E1st string breakage in "Night Meets Light" at 44:17 right in stride. My 🎸hero!!! Thanks for posting!
Steve + anybody is the greatest unknown musician outside or the music workd
Anyone notice he broke a high E string during Night Meets Light? And he finished the song without the benefit of being able to incorporate open E notes (among other things), but he improvised and made it look like it didn't even matter. Mark of a master. That's the reason for the different guitar after the drum solo.
Steve is a musician's musician. Technical artist and Dave LaRue an excellent bass player. Steve was the perfect replacement for RB in Deep Purple. He adds his own flare to the DP catalogue of music. Love his style and mastery of the fretboard. Classic experience as well adds to the Morse sound too!
Brought my kids out to this show. They loved Steve already, never telling them about Dave LaRue. He blew them away. ( Like he does everyone) Was that wrong? Lol Great show guys! 🤘😎
Who are these people talking the whole time?!? No respect…
Love you Steve, thanks again and again for all you’ve done
People talking ruined live music for me… I go crazy, loose my cool
Steve amazes us once again
Awesomeness
Love steve playing.
I need player's like his and style outers spaceor just ghow down music
Lovely..!!! SM is just amazing. Loved his material and playing for 30 years (scary..).
Love watching him. So interesting how it holds the next and his picking is insane
Saw the SMB twice at the Club Bene in Sayreville NJ. Mind numbing both times.
Thanks for posting this ! Awesome! Just wish he would have done Cruise Missle.
Love the Matching MusicMan Guitar and Bass and I've got a bass like that and it Rocks,Just wish I could play like dat guy nah!Jcsx
My Fav Guitarrist Ever!!!!
Rising Power baby!!
I was there upfront got there a little late but got most of Steve Morse set ...missed beginning ...so glad u put this jem! ....up finally....!This was too good and been way to long not to share this superb performance of one the greatest underrated guitar players in the world! Great job again ! As per usual .you never dissapoint! Thx the dude !
Steve Morse was voted Best Overall Guitarist 5 years in a row by Guitar Player Magazine (back when it was the only guitar magazine) and is in The Gallery of the greats! He’s also one of the greatest composers ever to pick up the instrument. The word underrated is overrated and overused. Just stop!!
As I just wrote elsewhere: I've seen the Dregs many times but the best was at Brassy's in Cocoa Beach around 1982 or so. (Kind of the same place/setup as the band is playing above.) I was watching from the pool room which was to the west side of the stage and I could watch them from there and there was no one else there. Meanwhile, everyone else in the bar was packed up front by the stage. They did three encores and every time they 'exited' to the side pool room (I think the guys who worked there thought I was one of their roadies or such) and during every? break,(at least two) at my request they would play songs (Wabash Cannonball was one) with the violin down low and Steve Morse playing the unamplifed electric (a Fender?) as loud as he could. Maybe they also did Orange Blossom Special? I think it was some Chet Atkins number. PHENOMENAL!!! Just me playing pool and them playing those tunes right there while I just was stoked. I see the lyrics for that (instrumentals only were played of course) " Well, I'm going down to Florida" . . . Twas pure magic! RC
Dummer is also plays really inspiring.
@31:52 Kickin' maximum axe!!!!!!!!
day-um!!! outstanding!!
wow.. great performance (!) .. love the drum sound here as well btw.
maybe it's me but i'm at a loss as to why some would want to meet up at a concert and talk their way through .. very audible in the classical/acoustic set here. ah well, just a quibble.. thanks for the upload!
yes, agreed! I found it extremely distracting and downright rude for the audience to disrespect the band with loud banter. I'll apologize for them.
A joy to watch
Wow, thanks for uploading, great sound!! Fab setlist! LOVE DAVE!! I was even a TLA member til they closed.
Its like Morse and La Rue came from another planet for make instrumental music give another step.
Thanks So Much for this video!..... Watchin Steve finish "Night Meets Light" without one string was beyond Majestic!!
i saw this tour in W palm beach and string broke during Stressfest
@@randomgack1965 oh man! And he was still using .10s then.
Thanks SO much for posting!!
Jimi Hendrix would say, "Got damn! That boy can play!"
Inspiration full time .
Thanks a bunch for posting the video! Amazing this is the opening show for the Dixie Dregs!! I wish I was there!
That’s a proper rock n roll crowd right there!!!🤣👏
Yes,and Satch swallowed up Dave La Rue when Morse went to Deep Purple.
I love music and all those creators!
Music is your special friend!
Not being a fan of Satriani, I didn't know that Dave Larue played with him. Perhaps Satch decided he needed a hefty infusion of melody, counterpoint, composition......and purpose.
Amazing
incredible
Great!
Romaine absolutely pummels his kit. If there was a national network of Shelter For Battered Drums & Abused Cymbals, his would be medivac-ed to the nearest one immediately after every SMB show.
He's a little heavy-handed for my taste ---- Rod Morgenstein is THE man!
FANTASTIC
So many guitarist out these days think they are at this level of performance composition arrangement. Articulation. None hold a candle to Mr Morse. All that I have heard need a lesson from this gentleman I all the above mentioned items. Peace out.
Maestro Morse speaketh ! ...
건강하시고, 라이브 많이 해주세요. ^^
Wow. Saw this SMB / DD tour w/ friends, its Chicago stop. Cool beyond words see a YT of now; a night to remember for sure, t/y/v/m for it.
This is magic!
Excellent! Thank you!
Great concert!!!
great! Thanks!
Wow!
he is a musician and playing guitar? he is one of the best i ever heart on stage.
His left hand fingers combined add up to his body height.
Reminds me of Madds Ericksen. Faint hints.
I'm going to say it. Love Steve! Just not with Deep Purple! Deep Purple Died late 80's
Thanks for the upload. Great vid and sound. Got the Dregs set from that night?
yes :) do a search
I only miss "The Oz"!!!!
Why did Steve himself says his classical pieces are boring? I know he was being self-effacing but that takes it too far , his classical and acoustic stuff is some of his best
That drummer - why do some guys have to BASH drums so hard they beat all the tone out of them? Bro you start at quadruple forté and where do you go.
P.S. Have done a couple shows with Steve not only THEE BEST out there but the nicest guy. After one gig we were just bullshitting back stage so long the management came and said we had to go cuz everyone was all cleaned up and ready to go home!! - No, true story - nicest guy in the world!
I have seen the Dregs and the Steve Morse band a couple dozen times and I never really warmed up to Van Romaine as a drummer. Rod Morganstein is THE man! And yes, Steve is one of the most gracious, generous people you could ever hope. At every single show I've attended he always came out to give out guitar picks and sign autographs and just chat with people. I Interviewed him by phone once for an article I was writing and he was very chatty and helpful.
Of course the crowd can’t keep quiet during The show. Oh wait it’s Philly. That explains it
dear God
There Sure is A Lottah Talkin goin on when people should Be Quietly listening To Da Masters nah!
yup......disrespect grande.
What's the name of the 4th song on this video ? I love it... Thanks.
2 years late but.... "Highland Wedding" masterpiece!!!
Steve left Deep Purple definitively?
Noisy audience while he is playing. Very disrespectfully
2020 and that's the set list? Nothing from Southern Steel or Coast To Coast? That's like Zepellin just playing obscure tracks from their last few albums!
Apparently this was the Steve Morse Band band opening for the Dregs so they only had a 50 minute set and couldn't work in all of the good S MB stuff. Perhaps they should have skipped the "medley" at the beginning in order to work something else in, or saved Night Meets Light for the full Dregs to play.
R.c. lonq island steve morse is great and famous seen him 5 times in 9o,s why he doesn,t get m0re accliam i don,t know
What is that gadget on top of Steve^s guitar?
Probably a synthesizer pickup although I can't see it clearly here.
Why is the audience making so much noise while performing?
yeah,a shame some people are just Gilligans.don't know how to act
