It's flawless. Criminally underrated. Bottom is my favorite by them, other than that The Flood, Swamp Song and Prison Sex are great. Sober is overplayed. There are better songs that Sober on Undertow.
It’s not the final take that’s on the album. Here, Hank says “I will use all my mistakes against you.” On the album it’s: “I will use my mistakes against you.”
I saw TOOL open up for Rollins Band on The End Of Silence tour in June of 92. Two months later I moved to Hollywood and wound up living directly across the street from Rollins. I miss the 90's.
I know he used to use his own mics at shows back in his black flag days and complained that people would always try to rip them out of his hands. I hold my dogs leash in much the same way when i take them for walks so i wont lose them when they see a rabbit (big dogs). Thats my guess.
I love Tool, and Prog rock/metal. But to see Henry fricken Rollins record his part over Prog has me spinning. How many more of my favorite things can I have in one video AHHHHHHH
That's pretty magical to watch. I listened to Undertow every morning and afternoon for over a year on my commute to and from college and never got tired of it. Neat to see the recording process behind the scenes.
I had Opiate and Undertow on a 120 min tape that I listened to almost everyday on the bus to a from high school from grade 9 -11. Also never got tired of it.
I acquired tools undertow album by accident from “BMG” back in mid to late 90s and have been a fan ever since, it’s so cool to see a piece of this played out behind the scenes, that’s awesome
@@jaythangry40 I didn’t pay for any of bmg or Columbia houses 11 CDs for a penny packages😄 every time I changed addresses they would send me more, never paid once lol
awesome. one of the coolest parts on the album. and as much as I love laterals I can always listen to this album anyway of the week and it always sounds fresh. they don't make em like they used to!
I thought it was Maynard talking too. Then again, when this album was heavy in my rotation I had never heard Maynard’s speaking voice. It wasn’t until I saw any of his interviews that I knew what he sounded like talking.
I remember vividly when this album dropped (I have the skateboard company 'Santa Monica Airlines aka SMA for introducing me to Tool by featuring 'Jerk Off' in one of their skate videos, John Carpententer also played a huge role in blowing this band up by featuring them on the soundtrack for 'Escapse From LA', the song, 'Sweat' was featured on it, as well), 'Bottom' is by far my favorite cut on the record (and the entire record is phenominal, btw), the emphasis and delivery Rollins gave on Bottom still gives me chills borderlining an out of body experience to this day (If you have not, obtain a copy of this album on 12" vinyl, probably one of the best mastered rock albums I've ever heard to date, I have the original press that I got when it dropped, as well as the repress), Undertow and Opiate (hell even Opiate sounds amazing for half of the songs being live, the mastering is insane to experience on a legitimate analog setup with really good bottom end), Sylvia Massy hit this one clear out of the stratosphere, this entire album is a huge waypoint in musical history, that won't soon be forgotten, if you haven't already, do yourself a favor and obtain a 12" vinyl LP copy of Undertow and Opiate, they are simply put, incredible to experience.
No, listen to the emphasis when he says, "I must first survive myself". Henry emphasises the "myself" a lot on this video, but on the album he doesn't.
This's 1 of the coolest fkn things I ever seen 2 legends together they totally need to so do this again now omg plz lets get some remastered of their old and back log and unreleased stuff just to hold us till next ep.
what ever happened to the full hour and a half video of them in the studio for undertow? Sylvia please upload the full one. I wanna watch when Danny Carey says "hey, get away from my 64' Chevy" then shoots the piano. the first time i heard that milk sprayed from my nose....and i wasn't even drinking any...
@@matthewcaskey1051 At least you tell the truth. Even the band have said they are not Metal. It's the fans (who, the lead singer calls "retarded," by the way) who claim the band is the "best."
This isn't the take used on the record. At 1:42 he says "ill use all my mistakes against you." He says "ill use my mistakes against you." on the record
I once asked Henry about this. He explained he was so blown away by the level the band was operating at - considering how new they were as an outfit.
True True musicians. The perfect grouping of TRUE musicians always delivering a thought provoking message, or just song about Maynards dick.
they didn't even know what they did here....amazing....it was magic....rock and roll history if you ask me...
You can say that about any band that recorded something and it sold.
@@nemonucliosis Agreed.
They wrote and performed it, pretty sure they know. Also, everything that has already happened is history, so, correct

well the pentagram says so
Bottom is maybe my favorite song on Undertow. Well, it's either that or any of the other songs.

DuckTalesWooHoo1987 what an album , and fy ducktales
Doc Roid bro, Til this day tho, I wish ol Maynard hadn't titled one of his best songs "P Sx" lol. Great album as a whole
I'm glad someone was smart enough to record this.
First thing I thought too. The person recording deserves a medal.
It’s not the final take that’s on the album.
Here, Hank says “I will use all my mistakes against you.”
On the album it’s: “I will use my mistakes against you.”
You can tell the respect Maynard has for Henry Rollins.
black flag influenced ALL bands after them.
I'm not surprised tbh they seem pretty similar in many aspects
Saw Rollins expanding his threshold of pain on Hot Wings.
If I saw in the street, I'd put you out....
he lied for sure about not eating spicy food,he owned it!
You mean hot ones lol
He ate every bite of every wing and didn’t flinch. He sweat but he didn’t act like he was in agony. That’s my fav episode of hot ones
Thankful that this footage exists
Enjoy it. Especially since Jones has said he’ll never work with Massy again.
I saw TOOL open up for Rollins Band on The End Of Silence tour in June of 92. Two months later I moved to Hollywood and wound up living directly across the street from Rollins. I miss the 90's.
oh cool, you lived across from him? when he lived in that shitty hood in....where his friend was killed?
I miss Clinton
When maynard comes in and screams "AND MY FEAR IS NAKEEEEED". something about it gives me chills.
This album was a masterpiece!!!🤯🤯🤯
Almost 30 years later and this album still holds up and is better than the majority of hard rock and metal that came in its titanic wake.
One of the best-produced albums on earth. Sylvia is a genius.
I love that this exists! Thank you!!!
Even in the studio Henry wraps the cord around his hand. I once asked him why..he told me he had no idea. I think he does he just wasn't giving it up.
I know he used to use his own mics at shows back in his black flag days and complained that people would always try to rip them out of his hands. I hold my dogs leash in much the same way when i take them for walks so i wont lose them when they see a rabbit (big dogs). Thats my guess.
Christian Lohse quite true. Fact
also its easier to whack someone on the head with it

I'll bet you didn't pay for it either.
On the real, I did the same thing.

Henry sounds similar to Maynard to me, so the first time I listened to Bottom I thought that it was just Maynard talking into the mic. Hehe.
Maybe if maynard smoked a carton a day.
imo Undertow-era Tool sounds a lot like Rollins Band...
This doesn't mean that what was seen here is on the album.
Totally different voices

Fucking awesome sauce ! My favorite song on undertow. Thanks for sharing this
this has to be the take that made it to the album.... so cool!

Also the fact that in this take he includes “all” when he says “I will use (all) my mistakes against you”
Tool forever!!
Oh, the context makes this track just that much better!
At about 0:24 when it kicks in you can see Maynard start swaying. Guy just feels the music.
That was really intense.

Henry Rollins and Maynard, 2 of
the most intense men in rock music, the tension in that room must have been genuinely life changing
