I have been doing 90% of my work since 1997 strictly in Adobe Audition waveform editor. (Formerly Cool Edit 96 (Previously WinDat)) I generate white noise or pure saw tones, and using this method and the straight resampling or manual pitch bending method is a technique I consistently use to create homemade synth sounds to this day. I do have to use a bit more layers (up to 1000), but the rich organic character that emerges is unattainable in any VSTi. I'm happy to see this being shared!
As a KID (around 12-14 years old) I used to play with my neighboor friend boombox double tape, and play the same song in each tape player at the same time to create this exact effect. IT WAS JUST FUN... We used to play Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Ratt, Dokken etc etc, all those songs. So funny to remember that. Cheers Sylvia.
Dearest Sylvia, 15 years after I spent 30gs on audio engineering school and then became a concrete finisher I bow down to you because I'm not worthy. You have re-invigorated my love of sound manipulation.. You are the most humble of teachers and you deserve all the praise. The music you channeled into creation shaped who I am as a person! much love
I learned what phasing was by recording something from tape over to the computer, and accidentally playing them both back at the same time. The natural inconsistent speeds of the tape made it sound AWESOME. We kept it for the intro of the final mix.
Always inspiring to watch your videos! I love how you like to experiment. Also, the hose drum mic technique was working on my own tracks very good. Greetings from Slovenia
Dear Sylvia, you are the most interesting audio pro on UA-cam - thanks for all the sparks of inspiration I would otherwise never have found. You are so savvy.
I love her man, and i love seeing techniques these engineers from way back came up with, because they are not always what i assumed they were. I never thought of time compression to make a phaser, i always used delay. I was thinking 'but how does that work, wouldn't we hear obvious out of sync tracks ?', but no, with a subtle amount we instead hear the phase effect as the compressed track moves from infront of the beat to behind it. Always learning ! ;)
Dang, Sylvia...that shrunk-snd-synced phaser'd part sounds choice !!! You shrunk the "bite" a little to fit it in (sequence & time)...something I DIDN'T do on a "cut" (years ago), while editing our "live". I'm not so sure the (much older) versions of PT allowed it...but I'm gonna try that within the next few days, in studio (I own it, so "playing around" with stuff like this is ok). Really like what you did there !!! --- "Crossbow", Florida
Thank you for these videos 🙏 I would very much love for you to talk more about your recording of "machines of Loving Grace" album "guilt" they're one of my favorite bands of all time and incredibly underrated I would love to hear any stories talking about the last album they made with you 🙏✌️
@Dr Delewded unless you record a Sm57 with a tube amplifier and pedal board that way you're gonna have a bad time with retakes and shenanigans so yes I would agree with you completely lol
i JUST bought your book ... AMAZING !!! by the way, ... have you seen the connections of cat6 cable used to connect the XLRs ? You can connect them and send phantom power without loosing quality over a 150 meters and connect 4 xlr with only one cable !!!.
Love It! I remember seeing TLA do this a bunch of years ago. I don't think he used the Time Compression tool though. that makes it super quick. what did he do? did he automate some thing or maybe he did something on the fly to move the out of phase track. idk.. But awesome stuff!
I had to go back and find that TLA video and I did! SO.. it turns out he actually had done it with tape and Varispeed but then I guess archived the session into protools. just incase you need to know..
Hey, Sylvia make a full-length tutorial on mixing, please.

wow so smooth, it really does sound like you used the old way of doing this with open reel ! - nice job as always :)

To think we can have Sylvia Massy herself just taking some time out of her day to pass along free gems. Thank you!
I learned what phasing was by recording something from tape over to the computer, and accidentally playing them both back at the same time. The natural inconsistent speeds of the tape made it sound AWESOME. We kept it for the intro of the final mix.
really cool phaser sounds, thanks Sylvia!
Glad to see you back! Thanks for the share!🙂
simple yet effective, thanks Sylvia
Great video! Easy explanation and example. Thank you!!!
I'm always in awe watching your production techniques, thank you!!!
Very inspiring, love learning how to do this stuff without plugins. So cool.
i love all your videos, you have awesome insight, and great recording skills!
You are fantastic and such an inspiration Sylvia! Thank you for sharing! I am going to give this a go!
Love watching your videos, much respect!
That's a handy trick! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us 🙏✨
It is like one long cross fade delight to sooth the ears for that brief moment of dizzy head. Love it.
my Queen! love your work, Ma'am! thank you for the inspiration!
Always inspiring to watch your videos! I love how you like to experiment. Also, the hose drum mic technique was working on my own tracks very good. Greetings from Slovenia
You're a genius. Very creative and effective.
Dig it. Love to see clips like this. Keep them coming. Super interesting.
Ahh, love this! Brings back fond memories back in the day of working as a kid in LA on the MCI-JH24!
Dear Sylvia, you are the most interesting audio pro on UA-cam - thanks for all the sparks of inspiration I would otherwise never have found. You are so savvy.
I had found half of this technique by accident in ableton. This is great! Thank you s0 much!!
I love the way your mind works. I never would have used a timestretch for a phaser (until now) but evidently you would and it sounds amazing.
such a cool trick!! thanx for sharing

Nice! Thanks Sylvia. 😮
Awesome awesome trick!!!! Thanks for sharing
Thank you this was very helpful!
Thanks Sylvia, legend!

Thanks for sharing this. Interesting trick!
It's a really natural sound, I like it
cool tip ! thanks sylvia !
Jesus, I never would've thought of that in a million years! lol Thanks for sharing this!
Love these tips!
Vintage Psychedelic Phaser Awesome.
That's absolutely sick
beautifully done! wish i had material worth sending your way to mix! :)
Thanks Sylvia, I'm going to try this on a cymbal crash I'm not happy with.
Sylvia I love you. You are awesome!!
Great video.
Thanks Silvia! I can already feel my recordings becoming more delightfully unhinged
Wow! So creative! Just what my lazy head needed to kickstart me 😄
I use to create this effect live on my Technics SL-1200 turntables; however, this is how a professional master does it. Sylvia is a legend.
It's how no masters do it too...

Soo cool. I’m learning to appreciate the subtle fx. I get waaaay carried away!
So cool !👏
sounds great
Damn, that sounds cool af.
love this
The machines of loving grace gilt album is my favorite piece of your work.
Thank you for these videos 🙏 I would very much love for you to talk more about your recording of "machines of Loving Grace" album "guilt" they're one of my favorite bands of all time and incredibly underrated I would love to hear any stories talking about the last album they made with you 🙏✌️
You're awesome!
I wish I can have a friend like you
the way you punched in the beginning/end shows the mastery you gained by learning on tape.
u are amazing genius. thanks obrigado merci
So cool ❤️
Sylvia is the coolest
Nice job, i purchased your book 'Recording Unhinged' :)
I would pay Sylvia to be a fly on the wall!
That's gonna upset a lot of analog phase pedal users but sometimes the truth hurts when it comes to convenience.
Hard to stick a PT rig on a pedal board
@Dr Delewded unless you record a Sm57 with a tube amplifier and pedal board that way you're gonna have a bad time with retakes and shenanigans so yes I would agree with you completely lol
@@blakeoms
I've avoided SM57s for over 20 years..
just never had the punch I liked.
Here's my mic locker before I sold it all
Shit I'm too drunk to attach a photo
👆🏼😂
It happens!
Nails never disappoint
thank you
Nice!
You're cool Sylvia
Nice
Definitely saving that CPU!
👌awesome
Sounds like a plan. I would go with a plug in. This does however opens the door to creativity. Thank you for your suggestion. Stay classy
Thx!

We have the same monitor. You rule.
The technique i used when mixing the album the number of the beast in 1984
♥♪Sylvia ☺

Nice monitor.
That’s what’s up
Coolest.
Neat!
Nice trick. We used to call that flanging.
👏 👏 👏
Goddamn! This is so obvious, why haven't I or anyone I've worked with ever thought of it!?
dig!!!
❤
Plug-in manufacturers have been really quiet since this dropped.
does anyone know what that little curved silver thing below her monitor is? it looks like a macro pad with a knob on it
Dangerous Audio ST Speaker Switcher. Neve 5088 to the right, vintage Western Electric amplifiers and other vintage electronics in the background.
We gotta get Sylvia OBS and an editor.😂
cool
I love you ...
Sylvia Massy... My Mistress Of Mastering
sweet phasing :)
I did this on accident with two out of phase amp mics the other day. Didn't sound as good lol.
You’re so hot talking this technical stuff! hopefully your boyfriend appreciates all the stuff! lol
Does the source track have to be in stereo?
which DAW is that?
Wot ? No vintage mic stuffed up a drainpipe ?
That's not like you at all 😜
Proper phasing.
Nice one Sylvia 👍
Time compassion tool is a plug in..
