  • We don't encounter a lot of steelhead in our journeys. The fish can be hard to find, and difficult to entice. When your n umber is called, you'd better come correct. In this video Ed Ward gives us some sage advise on how to fight a steelhead properly and aggressively to increase your chance of lading the fish. A high rod tip is your enemy, and Ed breaks down why!

There's some geomotry in it. I "only" fish salmon and sea trout, at a place, where the largest the last 10 years (in the river - my largest have been 11 and 16 pds) has been 45 and 23 pds - big fish) When the fish tries to run away, and you hold the point of the rod above it, you are actually forcing in towards the surface (imagine the rod 50 feet long, and it's easier to sse, what you are doing. Or imagine at the fis is only as far away from you, as the rod is long) When I fight a fish, I set the drag very light, and control it by hand. If the fish even breaks the surface, I am holding it to tight. When (it happens) I fish spin, I set the real, so I can wind backwards, so if the fish is close to braking the surfce, I can give it line. I very very rarely lose a fish, once I've set the hook - which I always wait to do, till the fish is taking line, so I don't risk pulling a tiny fly out of an open mouth, but "am sure" to pull it into the soft part of the siccors). I usually say: "I seduce my fish into my hand/net - I don't "r*pe" them." And I've made a deal with faith two decades ago, that I wil release the first fish every year for the rest of my life, knowing that the first often are the biggest - have released a few around 80 cm - feels gooood..!!!
