  • Chum salmon get a bad wrap. Most of that is just snobbishness on the part of fishermen who don't appreciate an abundant, hard-fighting fish. But the chum most people know, the heavily barred, hook-jawed green goblins, don't start out that way. Chum enter the rivers as startlingly beautiful silver bullets that rival steelhead in every way. Only a few rivers offer reliable fly fishing for chrome chums like this, and and Kanektok River in western Alaska is one of them. We fished with Alaska West and caught all the chums we could handle and then some, in addition to several other species this incredible river has to offer. Give Alaska West a call at 800-344-3628 for more information, or visit the online: www.deneki.com/alaskawest/

    Thank you for recognizing the Chum as a great fish. They are so aggressive they make us all look like heroic anglers. For those asking about eating them, they are not particularly oily and they taste damn good (smoked or not). It's part of the overall bad rep, which is unfounded. Sure if you are going to take a spawned out black fish the quality is not going to be great. However, you take a chrome fish or even a coloured fish with a white belly and cook a fillet on the BBQ (try a simple dill and mayo dressing) you will be very surprised at how good it is. Don't listen to the BS, make up your own mind.

      coat it with sugar and salt and let it dry brine for 10mins, brush off the excess and make a crispy skin pan fired salmon, use ghee or butter as the grease for frying .
      You can even poach it I bet a poached chum (all pun intended :) ) on creame cheese in a sandwich would be great

    in scotland we tend not to fish for spawning condition fish targeting only the fresh run silver coloured fish . if a coloured up fish is caught it is often not recorded as a fish in the river logbook and they are never killed to eat . im talking atlantic salmon not chum but it is a similar situation

    Aaron Thompson , I'm wondering how many others like you and me could testify, especially since I knew about it as early as 05'. No back cast room finally out of desperation but I went into it a bit heavy. TH 13'6 9wt and T heads.

    great vid! I have definately encountered disrespect towards the Chum. It's a weird culture around hating these fish. Sure, they might not taste as good. But they fight just as well. Respect for ALL fish!

    Second largest Pacific Salmon finally get some respect - have always wanted to fish for these either bullet chrome or that indescribably burnished / transitional look where they are predominantly still silver, but the markings are showing through. Do your guide services accept Centrepin anglers who strictly use artificials / flies?

    Just curious if you guys use circle hooks. I find if I use circle hooks I get the fish that bite the fly but don’t snag the others. They work great. Unfortunately not many chummers left up here in BC😪

    Not to be negative but they look rather small in comparison with the ones I've caught in the stave river in canada. Do you get bigger ones there or are they just a bit smaller?

    • @erwinli6962
      @erwinli6962 7 років тому

      I think that the fish hat run earlier in the year like these tend to be smaller. Think about how most of those big coho are caught in November, which is later in the year

    • @bpaull08
      @bpaull08 7 років тому

      Yes I would say they are smaller on this river. Some will reach into the mid to high teens but they are in the minority.

    I need a new rod and reel, should i get a 7 wt switch or a single handed rod? I'm going to be fishing bass, walleye, smaller pike and muskie, and whatever else bites. either way, this new rod will primarily be for skagit casting streamers and poppers. I'm going to need to make at most a 50-60 yard cast. I'm buying your comando head, but what type of rod should i get? any ideas would be appreciated. thanks.

    • @jackwhite94
      @jackwhite94 7 років тому

      Matthew Laritson single handed rod is the best but a switch will work it's just a little more expensive maybe a 7/8 and you can catch chum with that too

    Chum are the least delicious of the 5 species of Pacific salmon. That's my prejudice. Better than no salmon...but that's not really a problem in Alaska. Sure looks peaceful there.
