    We are all lucky to live in a time with so many amazing mandolin players and with easy access to their work. Chris Thile, Mike Marshall, Tim O'Brien, Sierra Hull, Jarrod Walker, the list is long.

    Tim has awesome technique. When I played guitar more seriously keeping the fingers close to the strings was a key to speed. He barely seems like he's moving his fingers. Thile is not human.

      @@JosephEaorle He's from the planet where they spend all - and I mean all - of their spare time practicing. It's the planet all the greats inhabit. Ability + Creative attitude + Awesome work ethic (plus that little extra something, of course) = Chris Thile.

    The Gift of music is an amazing thing! Thank God that we have media such as this that we can appreciate things that we may not be present to view. Both these guys are incredible in their own rights and belong on the Masters Stage... The differences in their styles is what made it fun for me. Tim is great but I think Chris has a way of thinking outside the box that leaves you on the edge of your seat asking for just one more! Thanks for posting the vid, I wasn't there but I can enjoy it as if...

      This isn't up for debate guys, yes there are amazing mandolinists out there but none cover the spectrum of music that Thile does with such authority. Think about this Chris plays folk, traditional bluegrass, classical, chamber, pop, "newgrass", jazz, and all genres with superman powers. Others do it for one or a few but I haven't heard another that covers music of all types with the extraordinary ability of this once in a generation musician.

    Very short story about Tim O'Brien. After a show with Daryl Scott after their 'Real Time' album release, I was at the merchandise table and commented that I had never heard of him before his work wtih Scott only to look up and he's standing right in front of me. I was mortified of course, but he just laughed and couldn't have been more gracious. I've been educated since. Awesome musician and a cool dude.

      Let me take a shot at that great question.
      Listen to all the resprctful and kowledgeable people commenting here.
      These people listen critically to this music they truly love.
      If it became just more mainstream "pop" music, I believe it would get a little(or a lot) dumbed down and bland...
      And truthfully I wouldn't learn much or appreciate it like I do from folks like you.
      So - thank you brothers and sisters for a lifetime...
      By the way I'm 70 this year .
      Keep on keeping on.

      @Aka60thChip 4 роки тому +1

      @@deanoverlie224 god bless you brother. Just turned 23 two days ago so I have a lot to learn still and music has been a large influence into the adult Ive become. I agree that if this became mainstream it would become dumbed down. I just wish there were independent stations that would play lesser known artists. At least then I wouldn't have to depend on recommendations based on bad algorithms that are largely based on popularity instead of associated genres and artists.

    Chris Thile has some impressive licks, but it always seems to go the same direction. Fine, bluegrass musicians have been exploring other influences since forever, no problem if he doesn't keep it straight-up bluegrass the whole time. But he never even seems to include any bluegrass. He jumps straight to the tricks. It reminds me of that guitarist we all know who jumps straight to soloing on the blues scale on every song. It doesn't have to be only bluegrass, but it's nice to include at least a little.

    I don't agree at all. He's been playing these songs his whole life. Of course he's not going to take the same, safe path through the tune. If you know the changes, you know that he knows them and that he's still playing over them. You could say the same thing about Hamilton de Hollanda and how he plays Jacob's tunes but you won't find many Brazilians agreeing with you. They're so inside the music, they're outside!
