    You may want to add a paper towel under all your moisture sensors. The paper will absorb all of the water, so even a small stream of water will be detected by the sensors :D

      I've been using Yolink sensors for a couple of years. They pick up water really quick. Also, you can link temperature sensors to the bulldog valve (or anything else you can dream up) to control it based on temperature.

    I like the shut off system but Ball valves like that aren't meant to be cycled that often. You will likely find that at some point in the future even with the valve fully off that water is still flowing past the valve due to excessive wear in the internal plastic valve seats.. You can mitigate this in part by installing an all Brass valve but you will likely still have to replace O rings on the valve stem once a year if you are cycling this thing every week. If I understood the video correctly you likely filmed this months ago so you should probably go cycle that valve by hand to see if it's loose and or leaking internally.

    I recommend installing the electronic shut-offs at any tank-style water heaters, as well. We had the water filter cannister split open. Even though I had turned off the main, there was enough back-pressure from the (three!) tanks to contribute to the flood. Flooded a computer, scanner, and two printers.

    why would you use a plug in shut off valve if the water lines freeze when there isn't power? I get that I would at least minimize the damage but why not solve the issue? or have something that closes when there is water AND when you lose power?

    If you've added the water shutoff device to your smart "house" stuff and you have Alexa running routines, you probably have an Alexa/Echo in your shop or office space. If that is the case you should disable the timer functions of when to turn it off and on and instead link it to a voice-trigger routine. For example if you say "Alexa, I'm leaving" she will go in to Guard Mode and listen for running water, smoke alarms, and breaking glass. Add to the routine she triggers with that to turn the water off. Then when you come back you say "Alexa, I'm back" and you have a routine set to run when Guard Mode deactivates to turn the water on.
    If you don't do it this way you are going to show up early some day or want to stay late and the water will turn off anyways. Also, this way the water always turns off when you leave and on when you come back (even over night).
    Source: I have routines setup to do something very, VERY similar in my house.

    • @craftedworkshop
      @craftedworkshop  9 місяців тому

      Thanks for this tip! I do have Echos throughout the shop and was using a standard routine to control everything when arriving and leaving. I didn't realize I could do the same thing by changing the Guard modes and would have the added benefits from Guard. Just finished setting it up, looks like it'll work great!

    You really should have removed any and all drywall that was wet and/or showing mold growth. It's great that you neutralized it, but if it's embedded, chances are highly likely that it is on the backside of the drywall. Then covering it back up with cabinets creates the perfect dark environment for the mold to thrive and start to grow again. I'm certified in mold remediation, so I'm not just blowing smoke, just looking out for the safety of people in their homes and work spaces.

    Clever shutoff solution, but given the recent frequency of southern climates getting freezing temps, I would still move the water heater and pipes to a conditioned space or condition the space around the water heater and pipes. These freezing events are going to be more frequent and will likely get worse in the future.

    • @craftedworkshop

      My plan is to build a utility room in the attic which will enclose the furnace and water heater. I can have an extra vent added in the ductwork and insulate the room. This will at least help to mitigate this from happening again before I finish the rest of the attic space.

    I'm really sick and tired of mattress sponsorships. You won't know if the mattress agrees with your back until at least 6 months of use. Yes there is a warranty but you can't just return the mattress whenever you want for a full refund. Each day that you keep the mattress decreases the amount of refund you can receive to have the mattress warrantied. I spent 5 grand on a purple mattress and sometimes it hurts sometimes it didn't but then after about 6 months it consistently started hurting and there was not a damn thing I could do. No one buys them because everybody knows about this trap.
