- Oh, this project turned out so lovely! I took an old antique/vintage box and turned it into a beautiful sewing box for living history. Lined in blue silk, this mother-of-pearl and wood box has anything I could possibly want for little sewing projects-thread in reproduction mother-of-pearl spools, scissors, an awl, buttonhook, bodkin, spaces for hooks and eyes and buttons, two thimbles, a pincushion, beaded needle book, emery cushion, antique yard measure, and a thread waxer.

I know exactly what you mean when you say you loved this project so much that you want to make another sewing kit. I practically made a sewing kit for every room in my house plus one to fit inside my wallet, one on my keychain, one in my travel bag... And I even have another one in mind to make. Have you considered sewing a “housewife” old fashioned folding fabric sewing kit? My obsession spurred from a time when I was at a friends house and she asked me to replace a clip on her fanny pack and I didn’t have my sewing kit on me...I lost my original travel one that went with me everywhere and I hadn’t replaced it at that time.
I have made a housewife on this video: ua-cam.com/video/JAs-iAJl-uQ/v-deo.html but I really prefer the sewing boxes more than the housewives.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! It has already gotten quite a bit of use and has held up well.
I bought an old sewing box from a car boot sale, it has a lift up lid and pull out drawers either side. It is fabric covered but must have had another cover stuck over that as the stain of the glue remains. I love the look of vintage sewing boxes that were covered with embroidered panels so that's what I'm aiming to do with it. My Mother Cross Stitched me a lovely design for the lid and I may cover the rest with a matching Cathy Kidstone material. Though I have alot of modern items in my sewing box, there's alot of vintage pieces I've collected - an awl with a Mother of Pearl handle, a scissor pocket that can hold three pairs of scissors, a variety of needle holders made of turned wood velvet etc and the necessary thimble collection.

Elizabeth lovely to read about your box and what you plan to do with it. Do you know about Katie Strachan channel,she is doing enbroidered box too .I have just discovered this channel, so have plenty to catch up on . It looks a perfect channel for me.
I'm hoping to fix some cross stitch onto a vintage box that I found .I must admit my last attempt at gluing fabric onto wood was a
disaster . .

Katelyn I loved this project,it really has inspired me. I always have problems with glues ,can't seem to find any satisfactory for fabric on wood ,I'm going to try yours ,that seemed to work well. That is gorgeous. Thank you for sharing. may I ask where you got the flower pendants and what glue you used to attach the bone beads also did you make the metal stems to fit in the bone beads? I recently made thread waxer and emery and was wanting to refit my own wooden box I acquired. That's how I found you.
I'm glad the video helped you! I bought the flower pendants from etsy: www.etsy.com/listing/799929869/1-piece-30-mm-pearl-oyster-sun-shell?ref=yr_purchases. I used super glue but they keep popping off so I'm fixing them with E6000 glue-we'll see if that works. I did not make the metal stems. I believe they are metal bugle beads. Hope this helps!
@@KatelynKearns E6000 has some give to it its kind of slightly rubbery. that might let them be more flexible and less likely to pop off. You could also try a jewelry glue or watchmakers glue like GS-hypocement. I like it for keeping gems in bails and where I cant solder. I have also heard that you can use bathroom silicone (the clear kind) lots of people use that for seashell art so it should glue bone to mother of pear/shell. I would think the solution would be to drill into the bead/pendant but that's a hassle and I have broken components in the past that way. Did you buy the 30mm for the spools and the 20mm for the emery and waxer?
Yes, I bought the 30mm for the spools and the 20mm for everything else.
Former writhing box?… we have one like this. Missing the dividers, that held ink well.
It could be a writing box; but it looks more like an original jewelry box to me.

She was a real person in Texas back in the 1830s that I used to portray when doing living history.
