I don’t really know anything about Vampire Weekend and had never actually heard a single note until 10 minutes and some change prior to typing this comment. I admittedly don’t know much more now, but I am thoroughly impressed by what little I do know. It’s top shelf classy move to cover Dylan, but it’s exponentially more so when you do it with a tremendous depth of respect for the source material and an unmistakably genuine display of adoration for said material. What more do I need to know? Musicians who realize that there is no such thing as “mastery” in the craft, only echelons of proficiency and endless possibilities for creative endeavor, exploration and expression are the ones I immediately gravitate toward. Lastly, of all the Dylan songs, to choose Jokerman really says something (that something is different for everyone I’m sure, but Dylan fans often place Jokerman near or at the top of their lists of Bob’s masterpieces). I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment that Jokerman is a masterpiece, I would be a fool to think otherwise! There are single lines that make other artists’ entire catalogues look as if they were scribbled in crayon on brightly colored construction paper. The thing that gets me is they keep rolling, one after another and I’ll be damned if every last one hits like an unseen pint glass in the ear hole. I know I’m rambling and I apologize. Fucking A though, new fan here me thinks.
Covers of Jokerman live or die based on capturing the RHYTHM of DYLAN lyrics. The ability to capture that rhythm, in turn, depends on fantastic rhythmic-backing (strumming, bass, drums, et. al). On the record we have Sly & Robbie (Jamaican master drum/bass duo). Bravo! Ezra’s done a commendable. Good job.
@@FlaschDJyour comment makes the most sense! This song in particular is so rhythmically specific, that a certain cadence needs to be achieved in order to make it work as a cover. VW really gets the track and they make it their own in such a remarkable way. I'm going absolutely nuts waiting for the new album haha
To be fair Dylan rarely performs live in the same notes and rhythm as his studio recording. His Letterman version of this song was a random Replacements sounding LA band and it also succeeded but w/o the studio calypso. This works even with the Emerson Lake Palmer instrumental tag.
holy shit ,literally this came right out of left field,no pun intended, the best cover in 30 yrs of loving this amazing song....kudos to these guys ...canada just took notice
I’m just a fairly average Bob Dylan fan and I could (poorly) sing maybe half of his discography unprompted and a capella. It’s not so tough to remember the lyrics to a song you’ve heard and sung along to several dozen times.
Did not know a thing about this band. Truly loved it right up until the free-form-psychedelic-jazz bit. But still great cover of a superb song. In these lyrics you can see why Dylan won the Nobel prize in literature.
They did the album version of Dylan's song, nice cover. For anyone who's not aware, Dylan's live version on Letterman in 84 is vastly different. Check it out if you haven't. Awesome performance. It's more new wave/punkish
@@emotionalfish1181just watched it again...Dylan is fine, but his side-men are posing so hard and playing so boringly, they drag it down. He’s done great live versions in concerts.
I like this better than the original. Cant say why particularly. Rythm is better perhaps. I saw them in miami and this cover was one of my favorite songs performed.
It's funny, I've been listening to lots of Bob and Beatles recently as my daughter is really getting into that period of music. I've tried listening to a lot of beatles covers and hate nearly all of them (I don't mind Bowie's Across the Universe but that's basically it). With Dylan there are so many good covers I can barely keep count. In some cases (obviously Hendrix's All along the watchtower but also The Byrds' version of my back pages which totally rules) they are actually better than the originals. I wonder why that is... anyway, this is another one to add to the list, especially love the motorik/krautrock style instrumental break in the middle!

An epic rendition.👍
Brilliant interpretation of a very under appreciated Dylan tune. Very well done lads…..bravo

What a great cover and homage to the source material! My Dylan mentor who left us way too early would have appreciated this!
Mine too :)

Given that Dylan is always reworking his songs I think he’d love this.
His version on Letterman is dire.
Couldn't disagree more about the letterman version, as I find it to be sublime.

That chord progression at 6:43 Jam Session is from another song can't place it.
