+Grayson Whitehair ahh the cape isnt as preppy as you would think. i mean yea it definitely is, and the summer parties are definitely like this, but i love the cape for the sunsets and rises, the beach, and the feeling you get. there's something magical about living here and that's why i love this song haha

Love this song! I know this is random info, but "Kwassa Kwassa" is a type of dance found in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It's commonly associated with the music genre "Soukous" or African Rumba, which is where the guitar melody in this song got its influence. ...lol ok, I'm done showing my Africanness #noimnot
This song was purposefully filmed on a 1986 Beneton Potato Camcorder - because that's how this video would have looked if you had made this video yourself after compression and uploading to a future UA-cam. Sheer genius!
Maybe it was different 5 years ago but now it’s all retweets of political stuff. Not like I disagree with all the stuff he retweets but it’s not very unique now.
This is THE song that got me hooked on VW. I live in a small town, so songs like these are not played on our hokey local stations. I got a car with Sirius SM and heard this then fell in love. Unfortunately after doing research, I also found out that the band had broken up. I vowed that if they ever got back together that I would go anywhere to see them in concert. Years later, got to see them in Nashville. LOVE THIS BAND!!
Richard Ayoade directed a Vampire Weekend video?! Why did I learn about this just now?! Totally love the vibe of this video, perfectly fitting for the early VW.
Wow Ive been listening to Vampire Weekend since my college days in 08’. And the Peter Gabriel shoutout has always been apparent, they both love African music 🎶
Looking back, i'm happy this album was produced in my middle teen years... the amount of fun i had to Vampire weekend on vinyl with my friends was awesome! 4 story house, 15 bedrooms, 4 kitchens, 6 dogs, a shit load of weed and an attic which lead to a 20 foot but 20 foot open roof! was amazing
Their sound is taken from Congolese soukous music. Paul Simon isn't the originator. I don't blame you for not knowing. They don't do the greatest job of giving credit.
Ironically, Peter Gabriel was able to take these African influences & make them sound good, by essentialiy fusing in further creative material, whereas this does sound a lot more like Paul Simon / Graceland: contented to take one idea and beat it to death.
Was depressed all day and when it got to its peak i was desperate for some remedy. Then I remembered Vampire Weekend and how 8 years ago when i was 14, i was hooked on them, and always swore that nothing can make me happier than this. Pure happiness, blessed with innocence ! Thank you.
I'm just sixteen so I'm still fairly young but I remember when I was 10/11 I used to stay up late watching tv during vacations and once heard this song on mtv and really liked it. No matter how many years go by, vampire weekend is the best, and when I heard this song on Fuji Rock in 2018, I'm glad I was able to see the performance. It was sad that Rostam left, but I was really happy that the band continued and the Father of the bride was released.I'm sorry for my poor English, but I was really happy that you came to Fuji for 2022 as well.
I feel like few really see how groundbreaking and epic this album really was. These guys created a genre, something that is increasingly difficult to do as music progresses. I've realized this from the many times i've searched on itunes for a band similar to this, always finding nothing comparable. I despise the hipsters and indie fanatics who embraced the album (after it got the "nod" by pitchfork, etc.), blogged about it, and then abandoned VW because their second album wasn't "hip" enough.
13 years on and all I hear is Paul Simon mixed with generic punk-adjacent indie pop like Cake or the White Stripes. It sounds good but not genre defining. It's funny how time changes how we perceive the ancestry of music influences.
This video is genius. Do you all not realize that they wanted the picture quality to look like that? Why do you complain? The costumes, film editing, acting and all are fantastic, and capture perfectly the 80's. This is real art, people.

geekybliss123 nope I'm south African and Kwassa Kwassa is a south African dance. Kinda out of fashion.
Vampire weekend has stated that they draw a lot of inspiration from african music. They cited the congolese rumba among those inspiration...
Dude it originated from Congo. South Africans stay trying to claim everything 😂

Eternally grateful for Vampire Weekend for introducing me to Kwassa Kwassa and, by extent, African music. What a fantastic journey.
