This is THE song that got me hooked on VW. I live in a small town, so songs like these are not played on our hokey local stations. I got a car with Sirius SM and heard this then fell in love. Unfortunately after doing research, I also found out that the band had broken up. I vowed that if they ever got back together that I would go anywhere to see them in concert. But I kinda forgot about until this year when I started listening to this band and it made me so happy when this song came up on the album :)
Their sound is taken from Congolese soukous music. Paul Simon isn't the originator. I don't blame you for not knowing. They don't do the greatest job of giving credit.
Ironically, Peter Gabriel was able to take these African influences & make them sound good, by essentialiy fusing in further creative material, whereas this does sound a lot more like Paul Simon / Graceland: contented to take one idea and beat it to death.
In my opinion this is one of the most underrated songs to ever be recorded. Sad to say I don't think Vampire Weekend will ever make one as good as this again
