Kilmer Swamp Root was from my hometown of Binghamton, NY. The original Kilmer building still stands and is about a quarter mile from my house. His mansion still stands and has been renovated. Fun fact: Binghamton, NY is the hometown of Rod Serling of the Twilight Zone. Met him a few times, we went to the same high school.
hahaha we actually get that alot! i havent watched too much of the other channels, but from what i hear they swear alot and celebrate alot.. well thank you, glad you enjoyed! and thanks for commenting!
yeah i know! we think it was a well that they used as a trash pit or put an outhouse over.. the thing is, it was almost as old as the site.. so it must have gone dry right away, or maybe it never filled in.. yeah when we dug it, we know it was something special. thanks for leaving us a comment
I just really appreciate all the work you put into making these videos archeologically valuable. Your passion shows, and that's a mighty thing. Such a worthy endeavor on top of the treasure hunting aspect. Wishing you everything you need to keep doing it!
Love the video! Back in the 1960's when I was a teenager, digging bottles in California gold country was an exciting hobby. Brings back great memories. Thank you.
This was a totally awesome dig! You gotta listen to us old-timers, especially us that are gold miners. A friend of mine just "discovered" a vein in NV that i told him about a couple of years ago. 40 ounces to the ton. My week has been full of incredible videos like this. Thanks Jake!
haha thank you! oh wow, i wish i had found actual gold instead, but those hutches were still pretty damn good! yeah, this was a good dig, i only wish they all could be that good, bc next week is gonna seem underwhelming by comparison.. but i guess thats just the nature of digging. you never know whats down there until you dig to the bottom. thank you richard!
well we are actually gonna create a short little book on these stage coach stops that we've dug! so i will be sure to promote the books we make in the future on the channel.. probably wont be til the winter, we are gonna be pretty busy this summer
oh i know right! so cool looking, so colorful! that was some of the best bottles i had ever found in a singal pit! thanks for watching and leaving us a comment!
Yeah i agree,. i think this was the best dig that we filmed.. it wasnt the fullest pit, but it had a ton a great stuff. well thank you for leaving a comment and you have a great summer as well!!
Most likely because they are a fairly new channel. Hopefully, it is not because they don't do a lot of whooping, hollering and high-fiving like so many of the other diggers. The systematic approach based upon historical research, which they share with us viewers, and the more dignified demeanor of "Below The Plains" is a big part of the channel's appeal for me--I suspect it is for others as well. If "Below The Plains" keeps producing content and we keep viewing, liking, subscribing and commenting the view count will undoubtedly grow!
hahaha that so fucking nice! haha yeah, we do try to make a quality product.. and all the celebrating seems a little... corny.. yeah and i know we will go farther if we make television quality videos.. as you can see, we've actually come a far way in only a few months.. still figuring out the editing and filming. its harder than i thought it would be! but thank you, that made my night
haha thank you! yeah it was a really good dig.. we actually got 2 dakota territory hutches! but yeah, the blue one was pretty damn cool. thanks for leaving us a comment!
Whoa! those sodas were just about the coolest thing I have ever seen. the picture looked amazing too! thanks for sharing it with us. such a great video!!!
Great dig guys. That old well just kept giving up the goods. Lots of trash yes, but the treasures was worth it. Love seeing so many old bottles coming out still intact after all these years buried.
yeah i know right. such a strange pit. probably ranged from like 1870 to like 1910.. and they had other pits there that were like only 5-10 years in range.. so they must have been using it as a trash pit while they dug separate outhouses.. when we probed it we hit the rocks and we assumed it was concrete, so we almost didnt even dig it! well thank you for leaving us a comment
haha we try to get the video out on sundays at 6. but sometime we will release it a day late or a day early depending on when we have free time. we like to keep someone available to run the account so we can respond to people in real time
oh i know right.. i had to mess with the color grading on my videos to make them look like how the looked in real life. yeah that pit was pretty cool. the wells are always interesting. such a range of items in them. thanks for watching and commenting!
I read you don't keep a lot or have a huge collection but I think that would make video of your collection more interesting. Show what you have. Tell what each piece is. Where you found it and why you kept it. A detailed video of the items cleaned up would be interesting to me anyway.
well im glad you found he channel! yeah that was a pretty good pit.. we maybe get like 2 or 3 of them a year if were lucky. i appreciate you watching and leaving us a comment!
oh yeah i know!! those we unreal. i used color grading to get them to look a little more like they do in real life. really happy with how it turned out
yeah.. okay! we can do that for you., so it might be a few weeks until i get back out digging again, but i can do that.. just keep reminding me in the comment section of whatever video is my latest video. i wont forget but, its just easier if you keep contacting me, bc sometime i cant find the old comments. but yeah thats no problem!

i havent heard of that channel, gonna have to check it out. really glad you like the channel. and yeah ive noticed that about digs.. sometimes i will find stuff from the 50s on top of like an 1880s privy.. so i always make sure i dig a test hole to the bottom, if i hit something from the late 1920s forward... just to check. thanks for watching. glad you like the video.. and to be honest, this is probably one of our best videos.. top 3 for sure.. its a shame it didnt get more views!!!

I worry of cave ins..esp.if your alone..when perhaps you could tie off yourself...through a pvc pipe tethered to the front/rear of your vehicle..if a cave in occured..you would have air supplied and perhaps be able to free yourself..this is how we mined the back country..it did save us at one time..we never dug deeper than our pvc ..we usually carried a 2" ran a rope through it, secured to ourselves with a carbine and then to a secure item...a 2" 2 ft long then a 1&1//2 to 1 inch fitted together made a size ft air supply yet broke down to easily carry...I really love your content....be safe.
Well thank you for subbing nancy! yeah we come across those dr. kilmer's swamp roots pretty often. arent they just the coolest looking bottle. so ornate! those are one of my favorite mass produced bottles, i actually have one on my shelf! well thanks for leaving us a comment and enjoy the channel! and dont hesitate to leave us a comment in the future
haha thanks! yeah this was one of my favorite videos to edit, when everything is filmed right, it acttually makes it fun to put together. well thank you for leaving us a comment
Nice to see Jake, the "behind the spotlight" member of this team, in the pit. I just read your kind and extensive reply to a watchers query on grinding and probing.
I recently came across your channel and I just thought I'd let you know that you're amazing. this video was great, and I hope your channel really takes off. I think It could be big
Yeah.. its always a good day when you get a soda that has territory on it.. ive only ever gotten 2 in a single pit one other time.. i had never seen on like that really blue one. yeah, i just wish every pit could be like that! thanks for leaving us a comment
Lighting rod insulator's. They were at ground level on the wire for the rod on the roof of old homes. I would of liked to seen a closer look at cracked Blob Top. The Territorial hutches were great finds. The big man will have to loose a few pounds if he plans on going into small holes. lol. Looking forward to your next video. Thanks
lol! yeah it was a nightmare to dig, because you could barely work a shovel in there.. we were gonna dismantle the rocks, until we realized that it was a well.. we thought they were just thrown down there for the first 2 feet, but then we realized it was a structure.. it was just too cool to destroy!
I planned on asking if you fellas sat around in your down time trying to piece together broken dishes & you answered that several times! It would have been kool to see your results! ONWARD!
Those look like lightning rod insulators. I think there should be and older hole there somewhere close. That age that was mixed in there with newer bottles tells me that there may be a very nice 60s hole lurking out there somewhere. Some nice hutches that you got! I am hopefully looking forward to a nice old loaded hole on your next video!
haha thats the last video we have of that site.. but before we left south dakota, we were told there was an old stone foundation that used to be the general store,., there was a whole town down there next to that creek.. you can see the area a little better in our first video of that place.. i guess when the railroad came through town, they moved everything up the hill to be closer to the depot, so we are going back there,, i think the station only dates to 1870-71 though.. to be honest we havent had a ton of luck looking for anything earlier than that,, i guess it was pretty empty in the dakotas in the 60s
Yes they are lightning insulators. I have one still imbedded in the store on my 1830s house in Central NY. They are as old as threadless insulated. Look on glass auction listings before you sell. Great video as I've come to expect from you guys.
@Tom A It would explain the mix of age as well. Just a thought but I have found a lot of starter outhouse holes right against the back of the building, I mean right against the foundations. Just last year I found one and pulled an embossed pumpkinseed out of it. You guys do a great job at grid probing. I don't imagine you guys miss much.
yeah.. we sometime find them pretty close to the house.. maybe directly on the house a handful of time.. yeah i dont even wanna think about missing early pits.. some of these places we just cannot find the early pits.. maybe it is just right up close.. maybe they didnt wanna go far in the untamed country.. and when they were at war with the natives too.. i know for a fact that these people lived in constant fear that they could be attacked.. at least in the first few decades. its not like they were constantly on edge, but.. it was something always in the back of their mind. i was reading an early settlers journal and they were talking about the absolute terror of seeing a dust cloud coming towards them in the distance, bc the dust cloud was the first thing you would see on the horizon when a group of people racing on horseback was coming towards you.. yeah id want the outhouse close in that case!
140 years someone could have sat down and enjoyed a root beer whilst leisurely pooping, probably with a paper in the other hand; blissfully unaware that in 140 years someone would be digging in that poop to uncover the same empty bottle of soda! History is wonderful!

Would REALLY LIKE to see more of your finds cleaned up! Thank you for showing all you do!!
Fantastic finds guys. The river stone privy was very unique.
yeah i know! we think it was a well that they used as a trash pit or put an outhouse over.. the thing is, it was almost as old as the site.. so it must have gone dry right away, or maybe it never filled in.. yeah when we dug it, we know it was something special. thanks for leaving us a comment

The is the BEST treasure map find on UA-cam! Why doesn't this have 1 million views?
hahahah thanks dude!

Cool I remember digging up all kinds of those little medicine bottles and a lot of farm junk in our backyard as a kid in the early 80’s in Andover MN.
