I believe Erykah Badu has that effect on everyone who listens to her music. I’m a 90’s baby so I’m missed the first craze when it came out in 1997 being still a baby. However I come from a family that believes in music appreciation, so in my life I have listened to music of all genres from all decades and it just so happens I picked up “Baduizm” as a young man, 21 years of age, in the spring of 2015. I was at the right age to get the “Baduizm” effect, from the first track”On and On” I almost had to hold myself, she asked, did y’all feel that? I couldn’t describe it but the power of the music mixed with her delivery was sublimely incredible, there was a spiritual element to this record!!!! To this day I have yet to get over it!
Miss the days when BET had these shows. Looks like the vibe is so chill...incense, candles, and a bottle of wine... I can't believe what the standard of "good music" has evolved into....Take me back!!!
I totally agree I loved Ms.Badu and her Nubian Groove during that time. However I wished I had a Time Machine to go back to the 70s. I was a little girl, during that time, but I wished that I was in my 20s to fully enjoy that peace, self love & music movement that our Culture had at that time.
She's SUCH A GODDESS!!!! Such an inspiration for women of all colors. So intelligent, beautiful and strong! I love you, Erykah Badu!!!! You're sooo awesome!!!!!
First and foremost I want to thank the uploader for taking the time to share this knowledge. The quality was very good considering and the sound was great. You could see Badu’s glow came from within and her head wrap was high and strong because it was full of her artistry and spirit. I loved her outfit, her jewelry, and the unique artistry of her dress. Her stage presence and presentation of her art was outstanding and thoughtful. She truly has a gift. The musicians were powerful and you could see how much her background singers added as much to the music as the bass and were irreplaceable to this sound. Every word she said through her music and the interview had purpose. The only disappointing thing about this video was the interviewer herself and how she portrayed herself as shallow though she was put in place to host such a meaningful show and a soulful show. Yes I know that the atmosphere was to have a certain vibe but putting her feet up next to Badu looked distasteful. How she went on and on about her lemongrass after the subject had already past and barely even acknowledged the book she was gifted by Badu was sad. All she kept saying is you’re gonna perform for us right and play us our concert. Erykah gracefully responded to being compared to Billie Holiday that people make comparisons so that they can understand better, but she would like to one day be represented as an individual, just for the interviewer to carelessly say maybe one day another person would be compared to her completely destroyed the point of that. I was hoping she would be transformed by the performance of this art but she seemed to get more and more annoying throughout the show. Nonetheless, what a beautiful “listening party” and promotion of the album and it’s no wonder the deserved success of it. There will never be anything like it again. And lastly I love how Badu blew out the candles as she left and reminded us that “it’s not me, it’s through me. So don’t trip.” This performance was magic itself. Thank you again for sharing
"Doing the creator's work, that's what I'm here for and I'm still fly." 💯 I agree and I truly believe that's what our journey through earth should be. Love this amazing creature of a person (Erykah Badu). Peace and love ❤️
This brings back so many memories. I was in my 3rd year at Dillard University, sitting in my apartment in New Orleans East, should've been studying but had to watch this from beginning to end.
Badu in top form...so amazing to watch. Just imagine a star of this stature playing almost the entire album live on TV! It was a different time. Thank you for uploading this gem ❤
This was my introduction to Erykah and I've been loving her every since. Her background singers back were everything and their singing along with Erykah was the best
MoneyOverFame Agreed. I saw this when it first aired and I remember being floored from beat one but when she got to Ye-Yo I knew I was witnessing something truly amazing!
I’m 5 years late to the party with this response but I’ve been watching ye yo > sometimes on repeat for the last few days. It’s fucking incredible. She’s been a staple for so long. Amazing to watch her be exactly as amazing and moving before she was even famous. It’s unbelievable. That transition… “well I came to your to show I respect your flow…”
Wow, so many memories! I remember rushing home 🏃💨💨 from school to watch her on planet groove when this aired... I've always loved her 💕 Thank you for sharing
The ending vocals of "Stay" was so warm, soft, strong and intertwined with such phenomenal with harmony,, while each singer captured the unique opportunity to "showcase" their Individual vocal abilities!!! Brilliant!
In 48 years of living, I can name only one album I bought on the EXACT DAY it dropped. It was Baduizm. It was due to watching this video. (There's a reason Baduizm went triple platinum -it's that good.) Thanks Daree for uploading this!!
I remember when I first heard this song . I was visiting my grandmother from college and saw the video "on and on" on TV. From that point on I was hooked.
man this interview/performance really caught her at her purest essence, and it also just proves that Erykah badu has been doing this consciousness movement for her entire career hence other artist who all of a sudden want to jump on the pro black/conscious movement because it's trendy now smh.
Well, I wouldn't say they, "jumped on the bandwagon" since this concert, I think it (conscious music) jas been suppressed and rejected by the musician industry FIRST FEAR of what it would do or how it would affect the minds of "those of us" who would more than likely listen to it. The industry would MUCH RATHER accept, record and Encourage the Rap music of today, pushing it's self- degradation lyrics in hopes of destroying the community.
wow i'll never forget this whole segment I have it on vhs, have watched it hundreds of times , my favorite artist, I still remember rite after hearing this waiting for the cd to drop, it is my favorite cd , I bought like 6 copies of it, have one copy hanging from my car front mirror
I was so dazed throughout her performance almost feeling like my spirit was coming out of my body just dancing up in the air. And I love how her bright golden yellow head wrap just compliments her skin tone. Most shout-out to her band did kill it. I am so glad I stumbled upon this!!!
Watching this October 2018...relevant! Need todays artist to take notes. These small venue performance's are the best. You need real talent to pull this off.
@@cherylalt101 WHAT? Rachel! She married Paxton Baker from BET and absolutely broke my heart. He was part of the production staff on her prior show, Caribbean Rhythms.
Going to see her in 2 weeks. April 2019. Been listening to her since the 90’s. prepping with incense and a bottle of wine.. there’s only ONE queen B.. and that’s queen Badu.
That's so true. Honestly, it feels like Beyonce is NOW finding her niche. she's been making music for the masses for so long, nothing distinctly her own. Erykah Badu has been herself for this whole time.

the sprawl on the couch was everything....and it coordinated with her outfit....as for the comparisons to BILLIE HOLLIDAY...a friend of mine....HERMAN LEONARD....photographed Billie quite a lot...when i asked him did he like ERYKAH....and what he think of the comparison....he smiled....very slyly....and then said he would like to photograph MISS BADU...but he would charge her...smile....
" Baduizm was designed to get you high, just by listening to the music " Erykah Badu is a genius on so many levels
