If you love a beautiful movie, like the scenes and the colors, a solid story line, strong female characters, and almost 99 percent practical effects, and a male and female friendship that doesn't get pushed into a romance. Mad Max Fury Road, is more than a car movie and it's genuinely.... Perfect.
I loved Chris Evans character in this movie. At first I was like "oh no hes the asshole" and thought he would be the bad guy. But he was just the very blunt realistic person and appreciated what he brought to the team. The courage of some of the people in this movie really got to me >_
@@nicsandnacs That main song, or some version of it, was used in a really awesome scene in the movie Kick-Ass as well. I'll always associate it with Sunshine first but the scene in Kick-Ass that uses it is worthy of it as well.

@Christian England Like I said, it's cognitive dissonance. What that basically is, is a phenomenon whereby your expectations are more or less brought to a certain conclusion, before the end of a film. What that does is create an "expectation" of how the film will end. Of course, that doesn't spoil the ending, there's still a dozen different ways to end the movie based upon the overall expectation of that ending. But that's not the point. What the third act of this film does is completely throw out the baby with the bathwater. Everything that happened, up until the third act, is now rendered meaningless, by a sudden reversal of the plot. Now, it's about the "crazy nutcase" trying to foil the mission. And not about simply trying to get to the Sun, to restart it, so humanity doesn't freeze to death. What it is, is basically foiling the first two-thirds of the movie, and telling the audience that was all meaningless. And it was. Really, it was just another space flick, until the third act started. But people liked the film as it was. Turning the expectation onto its' head angers most people, because most people don't like surprises, unless that surprise still lines up with their expectations. Many people who grew to like the first two-thirds of the film were offended. If you still liked the film, in spite of the cognitive dissonance, then you are a rare person. You're like me, who also didn't mind the twist, because I frankly like twists. But not nearly everybody is like you and I. A lot of people don't like having their expectations thrown out the window by a film. It offends them, in a weird sort of way. That's the simplest way I could explain things. I hope it helps. The only thing that matters, in the end, is that you like it. If the movie is perfect to you, then it is perfect. It's really that simple.
@Christian England By "perfect," I really just meant that you liked it. There's no such thing as a technically perfect film. Only a bunch of very well liked films, by mass audiences. That's really what I meant. Any movie that I thoroughly enjoy, to me, is perfect. Even if that's not strictly what "perfect" means. It's perfect to me, in that I wouldn't want the film any other way.
@@shindari Cognitive Dissonance is when you hold conflicting beliefs about a thing at the same time. Yes he could engineer shit and fix the ship in the process after it blacked out bravo for that but that doesn't make him a good person here. There's a progression in this film that represents the psychological state of the crew as it deteriorates. Things become increasingly dream-like. Plus the relativistic effects of accelerating into the gravity well of the Sun. Human minds are not exactly used to that kind of environment. I have to say, I never found this film depressing. They have the vote about killing the guy, but in reality there was only ever one choice. Over and over (with a couple exceptions) you see the crew willing to do whatever has to be done for the good of Earth and humanity.
This Movie is a visual and audital class of Art! Im a huge Fan of Hans Zimmer but this score is one of the best ever written or composed ever!!! I love this movie in so much ways!❤
I adore this movie! It's been in my top 10 movies for years. The 3rd act divides opinions but I personally love it. It's very bold and so unexpected but there was a focus on the sun and the godlike status it had in some of the crew members' minds from the very beginning. (so it truly isn't out of nowhere) Pinbacker is just the extreme of it. The horror elements in the last act feel well fitting. With a different kind of 3rd act, I believe it would be just very ordinary story that would be lost in a collection of other average scifi films. The ending makes it stand out and makes me love the film. PS. Adagio in D minor is incredible!!
I look at the ending as everyone was saved. I went to the cinema to watch this film because it reunited the director, writer and lead actor from 28 Days Later. Mix in some acting royalty; Michelle Yeoh, Hiroyuki Sanada and Chris Evans' best performance. It's a brilliant film and I see nothing wrong with any of the acts.
they mention earlier in the film that they do not understand the physics in relation to proximity of the sun. Everything just starts falling apart into random chaos. That is why the third act goes off the rails, especially visually. They are no longer interacting with time and space in the same way they were when the were further from the sun.
I love this movie and I'd love to have a chance to see this in theaters. I didn't see it years later until it was on DVD or something. This must be stunning to see and hear in IMAX.
I forgot how wild this film is by the end, but also how dang BEAUTIFUL it is. I haven't seen it in probably as long as you hadn't seen it. I remember loving it though! Thank you for reacting to this!
One of my favorite films. Loved your commentary (just watched your vid for the Lighthouse too). Clearly the special effects + cinematography are off the hook in this film, and great to see your appreciation for Alex Garland, the sound design and music + Underworld :)
This was the same year as There Will Be Blood, No Country, and Jesse James, I was like year 2 of film school. We ALL saw this like 3 times in theaters.
Now I'm curious to hear what you thought of Annihilation. It was probably my favorite film of its year. A lot of people seem thrown by the final act of this film, but it was set up pretty much from the very beginning.
So many movies to do but editing is the most time consuming part. If only I was a vampire and didn’t have to sleep 😂 I’d have all the time in the world!
Great choice. Underseen film. Though they did this wierd promotion for the movie on UA-cam back when it came out, where they (no joke) released basically like 30 second TV Spots that individually showed pretty much every character death in the movie. Made no sense, but cool movie all the same.
4:32 Really good observation, many reactors miss that Harvey isn't as enthralled by Mercury as everyone else. I saw an interview a few years ago where the actors discussed their process for this movie. They were all given background for their characters, things that aren't really mentioned in the movie but that they were supposed to keep in mind as far as their performances went. Part of Harvey's packet was that he is extremely homesick and he's feeling weighed down by the mission when we are introduced to the characters. I think the actor did a really good job of portraying that on screen without it having to be said.
Thank you. Everyone is yapping on about Chris. He's a good action hero, but he doesn't have a lot of potential for depth with his incredible hunk looks. Cillian, though... Now there's an expressive face. And he knows how to use it. From 28 Days Later, through Sunrise, the Batman movies, and Inception, to... Whatever he is still going to create in the future... he makes characters you don't just see, but feel.
I remember seeing Danny Boyle's Sunshine and Duncan Jones's Moon for the first time in the same period and loved both of them for very different reasons. If you really would like to see more SF movies, I highly recommend the latter!
Just about every one on this cast has been in major comic book movies: Chris Evans (Cap/Human Torch) Michele Yeoh (cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.) Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange) Hiroyuki Sanada (Yakuza crime boss kiled by Ronin/Hawkeye in Avengers Endgame and also played Shingen in The Wolverine) Rose Byrne (Moira McTaggert in the X-Men films) Cillian Murphy (Scarecrow in the Nolan Batman trilogy) All extremely talented damn good actors! Havent watched Sunshine in a long time, but this was nice seeing you react to it!
Like your bro i love this film. Just watched it. Cillian Murphy lived 20 minutes away from my house. So big reason why i saw it at the start. But Danny Boyle does great films 🎥
Professor Brian Cox, a English (astro)physics specialist -- who has a bunch of BBC special series' -- was the consultant, and inspiration for Kilian Murphy's character.
You have probably heard this soundtrack in other movies/shows due to the fact that it had been in court on who owns the rights to it... The soundtrack release was held up for over a year with lawyers trying to resolve unspecified legal issues.[3] However, on 10 September 2008, Underworld announced that the soundtrack was to be released in digital format shortly.[4] On 25 November 2008 the soundtrack was finally released exclusively through the iTunes Store. On 14 February 2009 the album was re-released on iTunes in DRM-free iTunes Plus format.[1] A remastered version of "Adagio in D Minor" was released by John Murphy in 2012. Although available for purchase via iTunes, Murphy announced that anyone signing up to his site's newsletter would receive a free Mp3 copy, along with a copy of the remastered But yes, this soundtrack originally goes to this movie, and it's definitely a Great One.
Adagio in D Minor was made for Sunshine, like Capa Meets the Sun. That song has stuck with me forever, but Danny Boyle movies always impress souls upon my soul. TIDBIT: writing this movie really influenced Alex Garland, he's confessed so. Contemplating the end of existence, you can see its handprint on his subsequent work.
For me, personally, I'm a fan of angsty teen films such as Lady Bird, The Edge of Seventeen, Eighth Grade and so on...I also do kind of like drama films as well, but it has to be well-written and developed for me to actually like it. This film review is going great already. Never seen this movie before. Keep doing great content :)
Love The Edge of Seventeen! Glad you’re enjoying the video. If the movie interests you I’d say check it out. It’s a super entertaining and quick watch ☺️
Try the following scores done by John Murphy as well, very similar musical style like Sunshine: Armored (2009) 28 Weeks Later (2007) Miami Vice (2006) 28 Days Later... (2002)
My favorite Danny Boyle film, but my Blu-ray won't play on my PS3/PS4, apparently there were issues with original pressings of the disc. Brilliant film, so underseen.
Another banger of a reaction nici, keep going!!! Btw thus far sci-fi has been my favourite in terms of reactions from you (Many will say horror, but I want to let you live longer instead of getting all those heart attacks). I'll still clamor for a western reaction from you (actually writing a western short rn). Hope you have great week!
Christoper Nolan’s “The Prestige”. I love this movie, but have seen it so many times I am way beyond anything surprising. I’d like to see you watch this fresh and comment on your thoughts as this story unfolds. It’s a complicated and stunning story about revenge and obsession and what lengths a man will take to beat his main rival.
I don't know if its been mentioned, but at the end when Cillian is in the suit trying to get up, Danny Boyle was stepping on him. Cillian's frustration was genuine. Also the song? You might recognize it from some X-Men related trailers, or it was in Kick Ass. One of my favorite instrumentals ever.
The beauty of this movie is that it displays idealism. Putting the noble cause before your own needs, wants, even lives. It's a crusade and everyone aboard knew that the mission exceeded everything else. That level of nobility and self sacrifice makes you almost want to believe in human nature again. The third act kind of falls apart, as it's more about religion and faith than sci-fi at that point, and religion tends to make entertainment collapse
Great Movie! So I’m pretty sure the reason you recognize that awesome song “Adagio in D Minor” by John Murphy, is that the same basic melody of it is used in like 5000 movies. I’m a crazy LOTR guy so I first recognized it right after Gandalf falls from the Bridge of Khazad Dûm, but now I hear it in SO many films. Seriously, since you have an ear for film scores, now that you’ve heard it your going to recognize it in like 50% of the sad/emotional scenes you watch. Its like the Wilhelm Scream for film composers 😆.
I love this movie. I rewatch it frequently. I guess sci-fi is my favorite genre, but it’s hard to find good sci-fi films like this. Because of that, horror is probably my most watched genre because there is an abundance of films to choose from. I watch reactions for those two the most.
Interesting fact: More than 50% of the cast was in either a Marvel, or DC film, either before, or shortly after, this movie. Without naming the actors, here are all the comic book movies represented by the cast: Dr Strange Captain America Batman Begins The Wolverine X-Men: Days of Future Past Kung-Fu Panda 2 (Hey! He's a Kung-Fu Superhero!! It counts!!!!)
There are only four actors in this movie who haven't been in a Marvel or DC film (that's not counting the two kids at the end). They are Cliff Curtis, Troy Garity, Chipo Chung and Paloma Baeza. While I'm here, I'm not sure why you brought up Kung Fu Panda. That is neither a Marvel or DC film and Michelle Yeoh was in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
still hands down my fave chris evans role. i think he once said in an interview that its one of his favourite roles but most people wont know him for it
The reason "Adagio in D Minor" sounded familiar is because it's been remixed and reused by its composer, John Murphy, to various levels in other places, most notably in the form of "Strobe" in Kick-Ass, but also in various trailers and TV shows. This was its first iteration and original use though.
One of my favorite sci-fi/space movies, easily. Fantastic cast, music, visuals. Wanted to recommend it when I saw your Snowpiercer reaction, lord behold this was already up. The third act is...different, but there is a bit of foreshadowing, so for me it didn't come totally out of left field and no way does it ruin the film. I'm just glad to see it getting some love and attention.
I remember I bought this out of shear impulse a couple of years after it came out, and holy crap! This turned out to be one of my favorite, top ten, sci-fi dramas of all time. I even nerded out over the DVD extras because the movie just blew my mind. Wait... speaking of top ten sci-fi films... have you ever seen Blade Runner: The Final Cut? That's definitely a two for one. The Documentary on the dual-disc collection (I think it may be 3 discs, can't remember), Dangerous Days, really does a deep dive into the making of the film and spans nearly 30 years of how it came to become The Final Cut. You could literally make 4 commentary or review videos just off of those discs.
That soundtrack is so iconic that it is now widely used in trailers and even in tv shows like walking dead, In trailers of xmen etc. Its so fucking good
God I don’t think I could ever watch that movie again. Such a difficult watch. Studied it at uni and it’s a great movie but don’t think I can handle it.
I love this fucking movie. Also that song you recognized? It’s been reused over and over again in TV and film, but it was made for this movie. The soundtrack for this film had a weird afterlife.
Oh also, I hated it at first. I didn’t understand the ending, nor did I understand why they went that route. But something kept drawing me back to it, and I kept watching it. And I’ve come around to loving it.
20:46 - One of my dad's friends was a fireman for a time. He told us, back when I was a kid long ago, that he had grabbed someone by the arm to pull them out of a house fire. Said their skin just slid right off in his hand.
@@nicsandnacs LOL I think that is the reaction everyone has on first viewing. It took me about 6-7 times before I started to put all the pieces together.
Its kinda perfect how at the beginning you kept saying how beautiful it was and how you could stare at it all day and then toward the ending, with the weird cult/ disease of staring at the sun, how...fitting lol
The song at 9:40 has been used a billion times since this movie came out but this was it's original source. I'm glad I actually first heard that song watching Sunshine, it is absolutely phenomenal. It's been a bit overused lately sadly :( even used in WW84 which had a perfectly good composer in Hans Zimmer so why just use this already existing song? lol.
Came here to say this. It was composed for this film, and has been overused elsewhere... it doesn't affect me at all when I hear it in other projects, but it still hits me hard when I rewatch Sunshine.
@@nateschwartz8677 same man...same. whenever I hear it in other pictures I first roll my eyes and then I think of Sunshine so it basically takes me out of the movie I'm watching lol
This film kept me on a good edge. The 3rd act was alright but I absolutely love the poetic of the ending of the film when Kappa is embraced by the explosion in his moment of death. I do love this movie.
I’ve loved this movie and like your brother I try to get others to watch it. Definitely and underrated and overlooked movie. It’s reminiscent of Europa Report and Event Horizon to me.
My 10th grade teacher had a unit devoted to space and the future of space travel. Among reading, annotating, and writing a bunch of essays about various scientific articles we read, Sunshine and The Event Horizon were some movies she managed to incorporate into the lessons for the purpose of the unit. This movie was sad 😢

So glad you watched this! Easily one of my favorite movies of all time.
Go rewatch it and you’ll remember why you loved it so much ☺️ I’m so glad I rewatched it!
The music alone in this movie gives me goosebumps and a tear everytime
The Captain was unwilling to risk the life of his crew. That's why he went out instead of one of the others.
One of my favorite films. Loved your commentary (just watched your vid for the Lighthouse too). Clearly the special effects + cinematography are off the hook in this film, and great to see your appreciation for Alex Garland, the sound design and music + Underworld :)
Kaneda's death scene is epic. One of the best death scenes ever IMHO.
I’m gonna recommend another Danny Boyle movie, 28 Days Later. It’s a must watch!
YES
Yesssss
Fun fact: 28 Days Later was also written by Alex Garland.
@@TheBS1000 And also stars Cillian Murphy
"Most likely you have to die , in space movies"
Apollo 13: "BWA HAAAAH"
I mean, the whole of NASA gets top tier bragging rights for getting those astronauts back safely.
I love this film. Come back
Adagio in d minor is an amazing tune i could listen to it all day
This was the same year as There Will Be Blood, No Country, and Jesse James, I was like year 2 of film school. We ALL saw this like 3 times in theaters.
The combination of the visuals and music in the ending scenes is one of the most underrated in the sci-fi genre! What a perfect ending ;(
Now I'm curious to hear what you thought of Annihilation. It was probably my favorite film of its year. A lot of people seem thrown by the final act of this film, but it was set up pretty much from the very beginning.
*Just sitting here waiting for your "You're Next" and "Strangers: Prey at Night" movie commentary*
So many movies to do but editing is the most time consuming part. If only I was a vampire and didn’t have to sleep 😂 I’d have all the time in the world!
@@nicsandnacs you'd be the best vampire 😂🙌🏼
Those are both pretty cool. I love the use of music in Prey at Night.
@@nicsandnacs No worries I'll wait for it. Stay safe 💖
Great choice. Underseen film. Though they did this wierd promotion for the movie on UA-cam back when it came out, where they (no joke) released basically like 30 second TV Spots that individually showed pretty much every character death in the movie. Made no sense, but cool movie all the same.
That is the strangest promo ever 😂
4:32 Really good observation, many reactors miss that Harvey isn't as enthralled by Mercury as everyone else.
I saw an interview a few years ago where the actors discussed their process for this movie. They were all given background for their characters, things that aren't really mentioned in the movie but that they were supposed to keep in mind as far as their performances went. Part of Harvey's packet was that he is extremely homesick and he's feeling weighed down by the mission when we are introduced to the characters. I think the actor did a really good job of portraying that on screen without it having to be said.
I thought it was because Mercury was falling into the sun and the crew is watching in shock knowing it could happen to the earth
I just see cillian and I'm sold , I love him so so so much he's SUCH a good actor lmao I'm sorry I see a movie and he's in it he's my only thought
If you liked this movie, you should also watch Shallow Grave. Same director but it is criminally overlooked.
Thanks for the recommendation!
danny boyle right? yeah SHALLOW GRAVE is a gem of a film - it was actually Ewan MCGregors debut before his breakout in Trainspotting!
All the characters in that movie were assholes, I couldn't get past that. Classic poster art though!!
Just about every one on this cast has been in major comic book movies:
Chris Evans (Cap/Human Torch)
Michele Yeoh (cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.)
Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange)
Hiroyuki Sanada (Yakuza crime boss kiled by Ronin/Hawkeye in Avengers Endgame and also played Shingen in The Wolverine)
Rose Byrne (Moira McTaggert in the X-Men films)
Cillian Murphy (Scarecrow in the Nolan Batman trilogy)
All extremely talented damn good actors!
Havent watched Sunshine in a long time, but this was nice seeing you react to it!
You forgot Mark Strong (Green Lantern, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Shazam!)
Like your bro i love this film. Just watched it. Cillian Murphy lived 20 minutes away from my house. So big reason why i saw it at the start. But Danny Boyle does great films 🎥
I watched it at the Utopiales sci-fi festival in Nantes when it was released in a cinema. Everyone was crying, it blew our mind, lol.
There's actually a commentary on the bluray/DVD from an astrophysicist talking about what the movie gets right, and what it gets a little wrong.
I was just about to comment this. And the physicist is none other than Brian Cox, who was also a consultant on the film.
Professor Brian Cox, a English (astro)physics specialist -- who has a bunch of BBC special series' -- was the consultant, and inspiration for Kilian Murphy's character.
Love when films actually do their research. Makes it way more believable and realistic ☺️
Although available for purchase via iTunes, Murphy announced that anyone signing up to his site's newsletter would receive a free Mp3 copy, along with a copy of the remastered
But yes, this soundtrack originally goes to this movie, and it's definitely a Great One.
Adagio in D Minor was made for Sunshine, like Capa Meets the Sun. That song has stuck with me forever, but Danny Boyle movies always impress souls upon my soul. TIDBIT: writing this movie really influenced Alex Garland, he's confessed so. Contemplating the end of existence, you can see its handprint on his subsequent work.
only downside is the end credit track. Overall tho this is an absolutely visceral film. Utterly existential
Sunshine is very underrated movie. Thanks for the reaction.
@@nicsandnacs Yeah, I'll definitely watch it since Hailee Steinfeld's portraying the main character in the film. She's also a good actress!
Try the following scores done by John Murphy as well, very similar musical style like Sunshine:
Armored (2009)
28 Weeks Later (2007)
Miami Vice (2006)
28 Days Later... (2002)
He didn't freeze to death guys, just gonna nap for 70 or so years
I love that this can be both a sci fi and a spiritual movie in terms of the ending.
I found your channel recently and I've been loving your channel since! Keep up the incredible videos!! ❤❤
Thanks ☺️ Welcome to the channel!
Finally someone doing a reaction to sunshine!
Love filming horrors but gotta take a rest from them so I don’t fall apart 😂
omg yes!! so glad someone finally reacted to this gem!
Definitely a hidden gem ☺️
This is literally my number one movie of all time! Glad u saw it
Loved this movie! The music is phenomenal especially at the Mercury scene
The music is so beautiful ❤️
3/4th of this film was perfect. Turning the last act as a slasher flick killed it for me on being one of the greatest sci-fi's.
Sunshine is such an underrated film. I loved it.
PS... for the song ua-cam.com/video/I32QDjSbmcs/v-deo.html
Great directing gets the best out of the actors, even if it means stepping on them 😂
The beauty of this movie is that it displays idealism.
Frankly, I love the commentaries that freak you out. It may not be insightful, but it sure is entertaining.
Without naming the actors, here are all the comic book movies represented by the cast:
Dr Strange
Captain America
Batman Begins
The Wolverine
X-Men: Days of Future Past
Kung-Fu Panda 2 (Hey!
I would like to see more thriller, horror, and WTF movie commentaries.
Same. Those are always good.
Literally one of my favorite movies.
still hands down my fave chris evans role. i think he once said in an interview that its one of his favourite roles but most people wont know him for it
Such a fantastic character and performance ❤️
I love the last line of the film, where there is a particularly beautiful sunrise.
That song plays in Kickass during the big rescue scene toward the end of the movie.
It also plays in The Walking Dead season 1 when the group heads toward the CDC...i also like the song.
There is a commentary of Brian Cox who talked about their thought process of the third act, quite an interesting listen.
I usually don't comment(sorry :c) but you have no idea how much I enjoy your videos...and your accent XD make me feel less alone :')
That’s really nice of you. I’m really happy that you enjoy the videos ☺️
That soundtrack is so iconic that it is now widely used in trailers and even in tv shows like walking dead, In trailers of xmen etc. Its so fucking good
I kinda like watch the classics. Your reactions are like watching them all over again. Maybe what would you think about watching Requiem for a Dream?
God I don’t think I could ever watch that movie again. Such a difficult watch. Studied it at uni and it’s a great movie but don’t think I can handle it.
Ace movie. Regarding the science behind it, the bluray has commentary from Professor Brian Cox who was a consultant on it. It's super interesting!!
Said their skin just slid right off in his hand.
i can tell your brother has good taste in movies =)
This is a completely different genre but could you do a commentary on Atonement? Love your videos
I went to the theater to see this when it came out and I loved it.
One of the most underrated movies of all time in my opinion. Along with Children of Men.
Think this is the role that landed Chris Evans the Captain America role. Both of them sacrificed themselves to freezing after all
I have one giant playlist on my phone and that is one of the songs. It is so good
This is one of my most favorite movies. Chris Evans always said he wish more people knew him from Sunshine
I would love to see your reaction to The Fountain. I love that movie and don't see many reaction videos to it. Such a masterpiece!
Watched it many many years ago. I remember being really confused and finding an explanation video 😂
The sun would’ve killed me too if I was on that ship 😂
The same night that I watched this film, years ago, I saw a meteor. And ever since this has been my all time favorite film!
