I went to my local PMT and bought this after watching this video. Very nearly spent £5k on a Les Paul VOS whilst I was there but I figured my wife would probably leave me so just got the amp. Cracking little thing it is.
I have this amp for almost a year. It has a lot of good features but it has some harshness too that always disturbed me. A week ago I have replaced the stock Ten-30 speaker for a Celestion Creamback and it improved the amp a lot. Now it sounds as it should. I have made a check at my favourite webshop and found that the cheapest available Celestion is the Ten-30 so no surprise that the little DSL does not sound perfectly with it.
Hi I was just wondering if this amp is loud enough to play with a band? What should I know about tube amps? Do I have to replace the tubes every couple of years?
@@jamesmoses4066 This is loud enough for home practice in the half-watt mode but even in the 5-watt mode it won’t be enough for band practice. For that you will need the 20 or the 40 watt version. Depending on how much you use it you will have to change tubes occasionally, when you hear the sound quality getting bad. With one band practice per week I used my first tube amp for years without needing to change tubes.
The older DSLc had more natural clipping in the clean channel, it has a single knob for the clean channel and no reverb. The newer one like Dagan is playing is made for more clean headroom
@@watchmania46 I suppose so, but it's a 5 watt marshall. Don't expect it to be a high volume clean amp- despite it having a "cleaner" clean channel. Honestly I think if you're considering buying this amp, ask advice from someone who own this amp. Only played a dsl5 a few times
Sounds way better than the competing Blackstar HT-5 combo. Much more lively drive channel and the cleans have a ton of life compared to the usually sterile Blackstar clean tone.
Dagan, UA-cam sound comes in great all the way to Texas! I got one of those white Epi Custom Pros. They growl! Great axe for these demos, too!... That lil Marshall packs a punch for 5 watts! That deep switch adds great bottom, too. Impressive, impressive!!...
This thing as far as I'm concerned is the ultimate practice amp as long as you're not looking for digital modeling mumbo jumbo. It just sounds damn good no matter what style you're playing. Throw an overdrive in front with about 50% gain on the amp and you're in chuggy chug territory, or back off the gain to about 10-15% and put a Blues Driver in front and bam, you've got SRV tones. Perfect size, not too heavy, won't blow your windows out even if you crank the volume, has an effects loop. I really can't find any fault with this amp at all. Reverb I guess could be a little more pronounced but definitely not a deal breaker.
I believe people have very different conceptions of what ”bedroom volume” should be. I had the DSL5C, but it didnt work for me. The usable and good tones came when it was turned up way past bedroom volume, even in the 0,5 watt mode. The clean channel was so loud I never hade the volume past 3...
Ordered one should be arriving early next week and I’m struggling not to macaroni my underpants. I have an American Tele and an Epiphone modded with a Filtertron bridge pick up. I’m going to tear my practice room a new arsehole and I cannot wait
Would you think, that this amp can be used in a flat/bedroom, when set on low power setting? I plan to buy a tube amp in a future (probably this one) but I don't want to disturb the neighbors.
I had the 1watt version of this and could dial it down to 0.1 watt and let me tell you it still had punch. I never had the volume past 12oclock and you could still hear it! Just remember, your neighbors don’t mind if you can play... if your a beginner or intermediate like me... use ya headphones cause neighbors hate music that sounds bad than it is. Good thing is, you can use them with these. Good luck man! 👌
@@mickyaa1245 I'm guessing the one watt version isn't loud enough to play with the band? I was considering the 20 watt But I'm afraid it might be too big. I'm trying to figure out what the right size is to be able to play with a band but also cut back if I need to play at home

@@JerMz-c7b not yet however, I really like the deep button. Even going to the backside and engaging the 1 watt or .5 watt button it’s still a VERY LOUD amp for a small room.
This a quite misleading demo! The Classic Gain channel on the DSL5CR doesn't even slightly break-up, even with both Gain and Volume on 10. And that is with a Les Paul with 14kOhm bridge pickup.
I’ve just replaced a crappy cheap amp from 20 years ago that had conked out with a Marshall MG15R thinking it would be a good replacement. It’s ok for the money, but a bit tinny and brittle sounding. I’m assuming this amp would have a much better sound? My main issue is volume though as I’m in a terraced house with young families next door. I’m just a home player, no intention of gigging. Would one of these on the low setting be about the same volume as the 15W solid state?
If you just want to play at home, try the dsl1cr but i will be good for nothing else but bedroom practice but you should play it at a store because it may be enough for you also im from a different country so there may some difference between amps here and amps there
I just bought one of these. I really like it but I have a question about extension cabs. The quick start guide states: "A single 16 ohm speaker cabinet can be connected ..." But on the amp itself below the speaker socket, it says: "1 X 16." This is confusing. Does that mean you use one speaker cabinet with two 8 ohm speakers wired for 16 ohms? Or does that mean that any cab you use can have only ONE 16 ohm speaker? Do you have any suggestions on speakers that would match up well with this amp?
Noob question for anyone watching: Is this amp suitable for a beginner to learn intro’s & riffs, and does it have enough distortion/gain to play lead without effects pedals? Thanks.
I think it would be perfectly suitable. For the type of gain you're talking about I think, you set it on the high gain channel, but keep the dial low, for some distortion tones without going into metal territory.
I think I seen 1 of these at my local guitar store I swear to god I think I had a peavy amp anyways it was 26 watts and I kid you not the 5 watt marshall was atleast 3 maybe 4 times as loud and the marshall hardly shit the bed no matter how much you cranked it up I just wonder if they have a tube amp thats 5 watts that gets that loud
