I'm really glad I tried this one out! I didn't think much of it at launch, but these pickups are wonderful.
Out of the 3 we've reviewed from this series, it is the first one I would ultimately recommend owning

The Trogly's Guitar Show Great review, thank you. It is very possible the pickup coils are unbalanced (wound differently), you would still be splitting the coils, however the effect would be similar to a tapped coil. The Gibson Burstbucker Pickups utilize an unbalanced coil design which results in a pickup that has a honk/nasal character to their output. Thank goodness Tim Shaw is at Fender, so many great designs/changes.

@P. Taylor and to sell a Les Paul like thing to people that want one, but don't want to buy one because of the headstock angle, the typically thought as less comfortable body shape compared to the strat, and without it being as thick and heavy (I think it's less thick anyway? Probably not having watched this video anyway, and I haven't looked at the specs weight wise so I could be wrong).

I wish they did more experimental guitars like this one with squier. The paranormals were cool but making the more experimental guitars more accessible just makes more sense to me. It would inspire so many more people to find their own style

I agree with you, however those are not real WRHB pickups. The WRHB are only available on a couple of the high end Telecaster models.
Also, the Pickups in this guitar can be split/tapped, it is my understanding the real WRHB Pickups are not designed to be split/tapped.

To explain what the Double Tap pickups actually do Trogly:
They are BOTH tapping and splitting in different modes. In each pickup one of the coils is significantly overwound but has a coil tap part way through the coil. In the “normal” humbucking mode that coil tap IS activated, so that it matches better with the other coil in the pickup and doesn’t result in an even more crazy hot humbucker pickup. When you activate the switch the “normally” wound coil in the pickup gets dumped to ground (i.e. the pickup genuinely “splits”) but the tap in the coil which remains active is released, voicing the whole coil now so that you get a more usual single coil kind of quantity of winds. This is why your DC resistances don’t even close to halve when you flip the switch... it’s not because it’s still a tapped humbucker, it’s because the remaining single coil is now hotter, with more winds, than it was when it was part of the full humbucker.
Fender introduced this concept first on the American Performer Series a couple of years ago and I believe applied for a patent for the idea, as although it uses two pickup switching methodologies that have existed for a long time the way they have incorporated the two together on the same pickup and especially the switching logic (with the tap active in normal mode) is new.
The idea behind the design is to maximise the true single coil sound of the switched setting (which is still not truly possible because of other inherent design characteristics of course) whilst minimising the level differential between humbucker and single coil sounds.

I like it a lot. It's like a Strat infused with Les Paul dna! I love the rosewood fretboard with the block inlays and the binding for one. I also like the three-way Gibson style toggle switch. The headstock looks great as does the neck. Interesting how it's got the input jack on the side like a Les Paul as well. And the fact that they throw two humbuckers in it and keep a fender style bridge and tremolo unit, very cool and unique. Even though I probably won't get one it's still very cool. 2 Grand isn't the end of the world but it's not cheap either. But I guess good things don't always come cheap. Excellent video and very thorough and well laid-out, well done!

Double tap means it's both splitting and tapping the pickup. When it's in the humbucking setting, one of the coils is tapped at a lower output. When you split the humbucker to a single coil, it untaps to get hotter so you don't get that huge loss of output like you get with most splittable humbuckers

I used to have a fender blacktop strat and a Marshall valvestate amp and it sounded similar to that. While the guitar and amp are long gone, It's a tone I have always had a soft spot for, and makes me really like the uptown strat

This guitar has a Charvel-esque finish, LP neck and wires, Cabernita pick guard, troublemaker pups, strat contours (mostly) and trem, and a tele output jack and knobs. Its an everything guitar and it scares me.

I don’t know why you think it’s ugly. I think it’s awesome! And Uptown/Downtown is hilarious!
The shortened scale makes it even COOLER! A single slab of mahogany is a very nice aspect - likely contributing to its weightiness. So, it seems a lot like Fender’s version of a Les Paul - the mahogany body, the controls are placed where LP controls are (volume, tone, toggle) and they added a whammy bar. Has the flat back of a Tele with the contour on the front.

That's weird and freaky but I like it,it looks like it went threw a blender with other scrap parts off other guitars and came up this.

16:08 what you played at this point was absolutely beautiful. I think you should piece together those licks for something!

As a guitarist / organist I have two WURLITZER BRASS HORN SET-UPS (each has a literal TROMBONE BELL AND A TRUMPET BELL. Since I don't use both footswitches I took the very cool brass labeled footsw. ring and put it on my black Guild Bluesbird guitars 3-way pickup selector switch. In large black letters it says WurliTzer at the top, and BRASS HORN at the bottom with all letters following the curve of the ring. I can put a spare pick behind the edge of the ring.

My parents bought a bed room set, living room set and a dining room set with that finish in 1958. It was called "Limed oak" and yes it turns yellow with age.

I love the look of this guitar. The creamy white with tortoise pickgaurd is beautiful. The mahogony body and nice darker neck, I think it looks amazing! I want my next guitar to have humbuckers, I was thinking classic Gibson, but after seeing and hearing this one, I just might seek it out.

I love the way it looks I think it's awesome.I love a Stratocaster body with a bound fingerboard on the neck. After watching the video? When you put a mild overdrive to it it sounds absolutely incredibly good.I want one.

I was not expecting to hear you play Asuka Strikes, you're just full of surprises.
I do rather like the look, though I would've actually preferred the larger CBS-style headstock.

These are really interesting looking guitars. Not sure if I would own one myself though. If you like gibson-y teles - Have you ever tried out the Fender Telecaster FMT? They have been out for a while but are a pretty good value for the money for "les paul" style teles and have seymour duncans. I like the amber FMT since it shows off the wood grain on the headstock, neck, and back of the body pretty well.

The finish reminds me of one of those plastic benches, where they try to make the plastic have a grain texture, but it just ends up getting full of dirt.

I like these guitars! I like it that Fender is experimenting and having some fun with the electronics and finishes. This sure beats the run of the mill sunburst finish, 3-pickup Strats that you normally see and are worshiped by traditionalists.
