Joined…. Oh and obviously followed 😂😂 as ever great video, I couldn’t agree more with the suggestion one should buy a watch that will be worn rather than flipped or gather dust, probably the most crucial part of collecting watches id say.

      It's great.
Women are the standard of most men. Others it's their partner who has opinions just as relevant.
When you love something and they totally crush what you think it's a universal thing. 😊
Oh gosh sorry I forgot the ladies who collect aswell and their partners. Sorry

I fell in love with watches relatively late in life. I'm 52. I really do love the "journey" more than the destination when it comes to buying a watch. I have my own "perfect" 3 watch collection and I may or may not extend it further depending on how things go in my life. I have my first "big" watch purchase a Seiko Sumo Pepsi diver, The Seiko '5' GMT in Blue/Black, and now a Seiko 5 Field watch. I even chose it over the Hamilton since I didn't want to pay $500 for a watch I can't even wash my hands with.
I can definitely say this though. Don't settle. If you REALLY want that one watch. Then save up and get it not something your going to settle for. I guarantee your going to be unhappy with your purchase.

Well when I started 3 years ago and added it all up, I had gone through 25 watches before finding out what I liked. As I've heard other watch geeks say "Your going to make watch buying mistakes, hopefully you learn from them and move on" and thankfully I didn't lose a lot in reselling what I didn't jive with or wear. So buy what you love and love what you buy, because like TIME life just ticks away 💯❣

I made many mistakes. I recognized it and still repeated many of them and still do. Have decided the mistakes are half the fun for me personally. Going to keep buying at a stupid rate with no real targeted goal or end game. Example, I keep buying watches I know will just be for display boxes that only me and my son look at... yet I buy them anyway. They never get worn, they are not investments, and no one would look at them that knew watches and think "Yea, good buy" We all need to do something we love, right?

8:08 Love your philosophy on watches. You are absolutely correct, they are companions which are there with you during some of the most pertinent periods of our lives. As well as tangible, physical heirlooms to another generation. Awesome video…!!!!!!!

Enjoy the chase is such a true statement. I recently got myself a speedy pro which I wanted for 2 years. To buy it I consolidated many watches I liked. I don’t regret doing so but I miss some of the ones I sold in order to afford the speedy. Don’t rush it guys, enjoy the process because the hunt is better than the kill.

You've convinced me to aim lower, not due to money (maybe money a little), but because in the end, as far as I'm you want something that immediately gives you joy, as opposed to a watch that makes you pause until you can rationalize why you bought it.

One of thee most true watch videos I’ve seen in a long time Russel! Your absolutely right and honest. I have watches I wish I didn’t buy but it’s sometimes a lesson you have to learn on your journey of buying watches. I save, make goals, and learn about my future purchases. Dynamite advice!

Totally agree about 'the chase', I sometimes put off buying the watch just to keep 'the chase' going. Once the watch has been bought it's a nice feeling to have it but also disappointing when 'the chase' or as I call it 'the mumbling' is over 😂. Great tips Russell, looking forward to the next show 👍🏻

Love the honesty and you are so right, I did all the mistakes you said although I can’t bring myself to sell any of them! I have my go to favourites and others just don’t get worn. As a result I now do exactly as you do, I research the watch, watch the reviews and look at the company before purchasing or not, as a result I love these one all the more and don’t feel like an idiot when I look at them later. Great video and sooooo accurate for many of us.

Brilliant as always dude. I'm like the Churchill dog nodding along. I'm definitely a sucker for the hype as at the moment everything I'm looking at is either in titanium, a GMT or octagonally inspired. Never been able to sell a watch I've purchased because each one signifies a specific part of my journey, in terms of watch collecting, or reminds me never to do it again (probably why I keep my Ice watch from the noughties on my desk)- Oh the shame!

Oof! Didn’t exactly stick the landing there Russ. Tbh, the “but…” after “buy what you like” made the “buy what you like” sound more like ass-covering.
We don’t drive timeless cars, or wear timeless clothes, go to timeless holiday destinations or decorate our houses timelessly. One of the best parts of looking at those family photos is seeing the fashion of the day & recognising instantly when & where it was.
So why would we want watches to be all but indistinguishable from family to family?
I hope the watches I leave to my kids remind them of the individuals I was, and not just what I liked to do with my spare money.
After all, we really like The Timeless Watch Collector, but we love The Mad Casio Collector, and how his channel is a glass of cold beer in what increasingly feels like a sea of warm wee.
    Just my tuppence worth.

My two most versatile pieces are my Invicta Pro Diver, and my Casio A-500. Both are dressy enough for church, casual enough for weekends with the family, and have bracelets so I can take them off and put them on frequently in hot weather, where I sweat like Honey Booboo in a marathon.

For me, what got me going originally was railroad pocket watches, my very first watch ever is a Hamilton 22B Railway Special that sits on my drawing desk running every day. As someone who loves being on trains and spent much of my youth in New York traveling on the subway, the railroad watch is close to my heart. It's not a popular style now, but it's the style that means a lot to me - I have a vintage railroad Accutron and there's a few more I want to get. After that, I'm a sucker for a slick chronograph - they're my favorite complication of all and most of my collection are chronographs as a result. I've definitely made some purchasing mistakes over time, still learning now. Excellent vid sir!

Thank you for all your advice! I wish I would have known this 2 years ago when I started! We’re simpatico about buying watches to wear and not trying to make a profit. I got a great deal on a new Speedy and could have sold it right away and made money. But I’ve always loved this watch and it hasn’t left my wrist in about 9 months! I certainly can’t sell it now that I’ve banged it up good, but memories for me and my kiddos!

I really enjoy your channel content. Your use of clever editing and (rather uniquely British) humor really keeps the energy level up when discussing what can sometimes be (even for watch nerds like us) rather dry content. The production level of my own channel is nowhere near yours, but one thing I'm quite proud of is that my unique personality comes through in my videos...much like yours...and that is priceless. Production quality can always be improved over time, but if you don't bring something uniquely YOU to the table, it's hard to get and keep people's interest. So...bravo!
Oh, P.S. I love when you get your wife involved in the mix. It's clear that she supports your hobby, but also very much has her own mind about your collection. It's quite hilarious when the Mad Watch Collector and his (probably much more sane) wife converge on the topic of watches.

There’s some fantastic tips here MWC!
The two that stood out to me the most are to slow down and enjoy the chase. I’ve bought watches on a whim or to tick a box that don’t get much wrist time at all anymore 🤦‍♂️ And I’ve also come to realise (particularly with secondhand watches) that I enjoy researching and finding the right version of a watch for me before buying it. The longer the research phase the more likely the watch is going to be a keeper rather than just a passing fad.
Awesome show as always MWC! Oh and I love Mrs MWC’s comment about the Casio fridge 😂

Great vid. Great advice. Agree on the wonder of combination of human and machine. But the term macroengineering... good word and from the perspective of a bacterium, yes. But might microengineering be a better term from the perspective of organisms larger than the watch itself?

  • @mmrahman82
    @mmrahman82 Рік тому

Agree with all that you said in the video.
Take your time buying watches: I wish I had the understanding or the foresight of knowing this first. After buying my first watch, I quickly bought another one, and shortly after that, I bought another one. I kept buying watches, but I never really took the time to really appreciate them.
Thankfully, I've taken it easy after my last purchase and am now enjoying my collection.
Searching for your next watch really is half the fun. If there is a watch I like, I try to do my research on it. I try to find videos and read reviews. If possible, I like to see the watch in person. You might find yourself feeling differently towards the watch once you've seen it in person.

I went down several rabbit holes myself. I made a lot of mistakes. I am too many Different micro brands. Also, I went down to citizen and Seiko rabbit hole. I have several watches that I really like but many of them don’t get wrist. Your video is the best advice to new collectors I’ve seen, because not only do you tell people to slow down you tell them why it’s a good idea. I bought watches so fast I didn’t get to know them so my fall in love with and I bought one of each color which was insane. I went through a period of time that it was the Hunt in the thrill of the kill. Needless to say, I have too many watches. Some of them are quality and some of them are quality. I need to thin out the herd I don’t know where to start. I guess ones that I don’t wear.

as time goes by I realise how similar we are with watch collecting. I dont think there is a point you raised that i dont agree with.
My collection ranges from the inexpensive to the Lux - a bit like you.
I completely agree with the fun being in the chase.
I've been on a list for a 116503 (my grail) for 2.5yrs, had a picture of it on my laptop background at work (so I know what I'm working towards!), I pop into store every time I pass to just look at the exhibition model through the display.
With the model being discontinued and replaced by the 126503 I was very deflated as I dont like the new version quite as much (like the smaller size and gold subdial ring applique)
I turned to the secondary market, but I couldnt get passed wanting to be the first and only owner of the watch, so I started giving up and even losing a bit of interest in the hobby. 😢
One week ago, my store called me and I got the very last 116503 they will see come through! 😂 Can you imagine how I feel!
Thanks for the content Russ, love it as always!

    Great vid, Russ. 💯 Truth!
Seeing that 1963... 😐 I got a Red Star (with swan neck regulator) that I *never* wear bc it gains MINUTES PER HOUR. (...or loses, does it really matter? It's not useful either way.) I need to learn how to regulate it via the swan neck, which supposedly makes it easier.

I can't disagree at all with your message Russel, I've been chanting the same thing for a longer time than I can remember, usually to those bandwagon jumpers who knock a watch for its on paper dimensions without even seeing or trying it. If you don't like it don't buy it, simples. We're all different (I'm not) and let's respect that. Stick a watch that you like and be happy.

    Other important rules I've learned:
-if you don't like it, put that watch away. Then try it again after some time, for an entire day if you can do it.. Then put it away again. If you still thinking about it, or if it make you smile even if you don't wear it probably it deserves a place in your collection. If don't, probably it's time to separate and make another person happy with it.
-when do you feel to have too much watches, force yourself to buy another one only if you sell one. Seems hard, but it makes you ponderate well on what you want to dismiss and what you want into your collection.
-don't force yourself into one single category, sometimes it's good to have another choice. I'm a Casio and G-Shock pig, but my heart could beat even for a mechanical, dress watch. I'll never be into big chunky 20 millimethers thick diver watches, nor in swiss made watches (I cannot buy a lot of them 😂), but a good watch will always be a good watch, and I will appreciate it.
-you don't have to wear a watch to impress someone, but just to feel comfortable and be happy. If you like your Swatch from 1993, wear it proudly!
-nobody, except pickpockets and us watch enthusiasts, will care about the watch you are wearing, if you like that Skmei, wear it!
-think it twice or thrice before buying a fashion watch. Armani is a wizard for the clothes, but he doesn't made directly watches. If you don't think about it, you'll find a Daniel Wellington or a Chronotec into a closet one day...
-changing the strap could change drastically the feel of the watch on your wrist, be brave!
I could go on for a day, probably repeating things (wear it only if you like it 😂), but... Good job man, lovely video!

Love this video, and you're quite right when you said in a few years we'll be asking who in their right mind would buy a turquoise dial watch, well just before you were born I bought a avocado bathroom suite, nuff said

I bought a sub $200 dive watch because I thought it would be cool to own one. Turns out I don't really like wearing a mechanical watch. The watch is great but I don't like wearing it every day and when it dies I need to reset the time, reset the day, reset the date, wind it, etc.... So now I just collect cool Casio's. Waaay more practical day to day and I'm not out to impress anyone, I just enjoy them

Number 6: When you feel you are ok with the watches you own, and there comes Russ showing a model you didnt know about… Watch the video 3 or 4 times…
    Research about the watch…
    A few days later, boom!
You are convinced you need it and place an order online.
So… Thanks a lot Russ, I am now waiting on that glorious Orient Defender.
    Wife’s gonna kill me 😅
