I have an 87 5.0, manual since new, with 30,000 kilometers and everyone on earth has convinced me that the smaller engine choice was the mistake of my life!
Had a 87 iroc same red 4 barrel carburetor 305 later put a 350 in and a transmission out of a Corvette pretty much the same transmission 700R4 love that car and then I had a 91 Z28 same red the only thing I did with that was get a used 96 Caprice classic police interceptor transmission put in because the overdrive went 140 Speedo was nothing to bury in that car it was easy unlike the 87 IROC that only had an 85 mph speedometer I could bury that in second gear when I put the new motor and trans in that loved both
I've known MotorWeek as my best friend ever since I saw it for the first time I believe it was on Channel 20 or 11 way back in the 80s. Yes I saw this show and was instantly in love with the 1986 Camaro Sports coupe which had a V6 engine, automatic transmission , White with a rust brown interior. it's engine snarled through twin tail pipes. Boy I really miss my first car!!! And what a blast!!! I loved the IROC and the IROC racing series when it started with all racing IROC race cars!!!
First time I saw a black n gold iroc in 1985 I was jaw dropped. It looked so clean and so mean it was bad ass and still is! And that’s why I stole one every day! 🪛 😂
The iroc z camaro was shead of its time it still looks better than any new camaro out there the first time i rode in one was a 88 and i couldnt beleive the power taking off it was the first car i was in that hit 145mph on the highway ive wanted one ever since maybe one day
They should've offered that 5.7 V8 as an option in Monte Carlo SS. If they were so concerned with competing with the 'vette, they coulda upcharged a premium for the upgrade. Being it was an "SS", it really should've had an optimum power plant available, not just the 180 hp 5.0L they came with.
There was a guy in my town that had a 1985/86 Monte SS....he bought a ZZ high performance crate 350 (450 hp 450 torque at crank) and put a vortech supercharger on it...had it dynoed at 600 hp to the wheels....that solved the 180 hp problem.
I have a blue 86 iroc z that’s almost done being restored that’s show room quality and I’m picking up a red 86 iroc z tomorrow. Then I’ll just need a white iroc z convertible. For them America 🇺🇸 colors
@@Lucille69caddy lol don't get your mullet in a uproar! Lol the only version that had a chance was the Firebird Formula 5.7! And I know cause I owned one!

PS: buddy had a 305 camaro and he put a 50 shot of Nos in it for a late night race, .. still couldnt beat my stock 5L
and Ford didn't force you to buy an automatic transmission. As a 1986 Gt owner, I will admit this generation of F body was finally designed to be a Z28 first and a Nova second, while the Foxbody was still a Fairmont design worked up to be performance car (or luxury car, I had a 1986 turbo Thunderbird too)
@@annathemaanderson4448 True, I just wish back in the 1970's GM had used the 307 rather than the 305 as their corporate 5.0 litre engine...then they'd have the rod length to stroke ratio the 327 was valued for.
When GM came out with the L69 5L it was beating Ford's 302 and the later LB9 5L was right on their door when optioned with the T5 and dual cat exhaust. But yeah, Ford hot rodded a light economy car that, performance wise, was a one trick pony while GM built a dedicated platform with all round performance in mind that ended up being heavier.
@@albertgaspar627 the automatic only thing was because the T5 was just too weak for the torque, weight, and grip. They built a couple test cars with the Corvette's ZF 6 speed paired to hot L98s and and meaner but that would have made the already more expensive cars in the segment even more expensive. The 305 made more sense as a production engine since it shared essentially the same crank and same rods with the 350.
I remember beating an Iroc-Z. Probably the 305 engine. Also beat a Vette. Not sure of the year. Early 80s model. And I remember beating a Buick T-Type,, by a nose. The good 'ol days.
@@kessler1571 Early 80s, maybe. No way you’re touching a mid to late 80s T-Type or Grand National. There’s a reason why there were “I eat Vettes for breakfast” bumper stickers all over the place, lol. My buddy’s dad had one on his ‘86 GN. And what year Vette did you beat? Certainly not one from the same time period.
The 5.7TPI is a very powerful engine when you reprogram the ECM and make a few minor changes… Modern cars do not have “air pumps” and much better computer programming.
I have had my 87 5.7 , from new !
Less than 29,000 miles, off the road since 92

That’s low miles why don’t you take it for a ride and enjoy it?
Man I always loved those! My brother in law had a 1989 iroc-z with the 5 speed manual transmission! Man that car was a beast for it’s day!
Was and is a cool car !. 5.7 would haul ass. The 87 IROC is a timeless collectible now.
You speak the truth
I’ve owned my 1987 Iroc-Z 5.7L for 25 years now 👍😁
Do you keep it parked outside your trailer every night? Or do you just take it out for special occasions like when you get your mullet styled?
I'm glad you didn't let it go.
Well done sir!.

Iroc-z forever 85 to 90
A BIG Thanks to Lucas Oils for sponsoring the Motorweek "shuffle" with Retro episodes! I enjoyed watching them. And John Davis hasn't aged a minute!

The 5.7 was a problem for the fox body. I had two foxes.
Do you have a 1984 Trans Am review?
Ahh, the good old days
Almost bought a teal IROC 5.0 stick shift in '91. Dad wouldn't co-sign for the loan. Made me buy a 4-door un-sporty LeBaron GTS instead.
ThunderHawk would be proud! If anyone gets that 80s reference.
God I love m.a.s.k.!!!!
M.A.S.K! Still have mine boxed and all
My friend has a 87 Iroc 350 99, 000 original miles, he’s the second owner
Sheesh 500 bux for 30 more hp not bad

I wonder how many Camaro owners actually went skiing?
My 84 Monte Carlo SS would eat IROCs even the 5.7s!
And even with the 5.7 it still lost 9 times out of 10 to a Mustang GT or LX 5.0!
Not here it didn’t, Ford fanboy.
