      Thank you I am practicing on the template I downloaded from you first project I decided to tackled was lady on a bike and a man bowing to her while tipping his hat, Of course I started with the bicycle wheels and realized I could not follow a simple thing like a circle it got much easier towards the end.

    Thank you for the video. I have been scroll sawing and found intarsia and fell in love, but like you said, intimidating. So I have not even tried it yet. With your full step by step instructions, this sea shell will be my first project. I agree with other people who said that the part about how to get the pieces to match up was brilliant. I would have hit that and thought I was no good and possibly quit, not knowing it happens to everyone and can be fixed. Absolutely brilliant. Thanks again for the inspiration…..I can’t wait to get my hands on my scroll saw (but first, I have to find out where to get exotic woods 🤷‍♀️).

    Really appreciate all the great material you covered in this series, and many thanks for sharing your skills and talents, which really show in your work, and your work ethics. Am just now working on my first piece, a Christmas gift for my youngest daughter, and can now see a completely different way of doing it, than before I saw your series. But, in just rounding over the edges of my pattern... ironically, also a sea shell design... I can see, from the pieces I hold in my hand, that a wide range of different looks can be applied, depending on how one goes about creating it. And, your tips are like gold! Thanks so much!

    I found this series juuuust as I was finishing my first intarsia. It really sucks. Your vids are VERY helpful and I plan to start another immediately. You're good at explaining in detail and demonstrating the technique, while not spending wasted minutes telling stories that aren relevant. Thanks Brutha. Much appreciated. I look forward to more small project vids.

    I have been scrolling for about 10 years and trying intarsia for about 6 months or so. These videos had so much helpful information that I wish that I had seen them before. I really appreciated the philosophy behind it all in that all patterns and other ways of doing intarsia are someone else's opinions but our individual interpretations on a given project are just as valid.
    Thank you for taking the time to video this, it has been very helpful from video #1. on tracing patterns rather than making 6 copies of a pattern to video #6 which validated that shaping of a project is an
    Individual choice and that "Mother Nature" has many variations of the same subject, none of which are wrong.
    Very well done.

      Mark Edenfield Hey Mark I hope you enjoy working with a scroll saw and smaller wood. To answer your question, it's a little bit of both. I don't have a good lumber mill locally so I always keep an eye on craigslist for wood deals. I also order a lot of my wood from www.ocoochhardwoods.com/ and sometimes Ebay.

    • @Scrollsawforum1
      @Scrollsawforum1  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Ron, This is the 1st time in 6 years of doing these videos that I have been asked this question. It's great to be able to answer a new question. First, Congrats on your new scroll saw, I'm sure you will be pleased with your purchase.
      Lacquer can be very pungent in its smell, after all, it is a bunch of chemicals mixed together that I will never be able to pronounce much less spell. You do want to be careful with it, I'm not a chemist nor a medical Doctor but common sense says you should handle it with care. I work out of a garage where I can open the door and put a fan behind me and blow the nasty smells outside. If you work in a confined space, I would not use spray lacquer indoors. It makes sense to spray your projects outside and if the weather won't allow for that, you can always use mineral oil to coat it, you will just need to reapply until the weather is good enough to take your project outside...Bob

    I just found your series on the seashell and being a newbie woodworker appreciate your videos and tips! This may sound odd, but I also am a "pen and pencil nut" and noticed the pen you used in marking and outlining your wood and drawing lines on your pattern. What kind of pen is that and where can I get one? I really like the way it makes a good, thin line without bleeding into the paper.

    • @Scrollsawforum1
      @Scrollsawforum1  8 років тому

      Hi Mike, What I am using is just a simple mechanical pencil. You should be able to find them anywhere that pens and pencils are sold. The reason I use them is that you will always get the same thickness line, unlike a wooden pencil where the line gets fatter as the pencil dulls. Good luck and have fun with your Intarsia.

  • @davidhawley1132
    @davidhawley1132 6 років тому

    Would it work for critical cuts to actually use the mating block when making the cut, as you did in repairing?
    Or if the piece is too thick to make it practical, to make templates not out of tracing paper but out of eg melamine?

    • @Scrollsawforum1
      @Scrollsawforum1  6 років тому

      Hi David, if you are going to make multiple copies of the same intarsia pattern, it might be worth making templates out of 1/4" thick plywood. Otherwise, I really don't see the need to go to all that extra trouble making separate mating blocks to cut one pattern. You can always give it a try though. Good luck and have fun...Bob

    Bob, Great set of instructional vid's! I'm just getting into fret work and intarsia. Picked up a heck of a deal on a used Excalibur on Craigslist and I'm ready to begin. I definitely like your technique on "marrying" the critical cuts on the separate pieces. The Seashell will be my first intarsia project. I know I will be referring back to your vid's when I run into.... challenges. I live in FL also and have a hard time finding hardwood here. I've ordered some off of eBay previously but would like to find a good local source. Any recommendations?

      @Scrollsawforum1  9 років тому

      ***** Great job on grabbing a deal on the Excalibur, that's hard to do! Have fun with your seashell, send a pic when you get it done, would love to see it, as far as finding wood locally, the best I can suggest is Google, I usually get mine online, I just placed an order from a new seller, so if all goes well and I receive it in a good time and the wood is of good quality, I will share it with everyone. Great series on intarsia! I learned a lot, and it has giving me inspiration to have a go at it. Couple of questions - 1) what about using risers on the inner pieces? Can you provide a link for those sanding pads you are using on your drill press? Thank You for the very informative tutorials.

    • @Scrollsawforum1
      @Scrollsawforum1  9 років тому

      WigWagWorkshop Thanks!...The seashell project didn't require any risers, I was trying to show just the basics. As for using them, it is simply using whatever thickness behind the intarsia piece to raise it up to the height you desire to add emphasis to a piece. Just glue a piece to the back of the main piece. I have a Kathy Wise horse head pattern laid out on the workbench for another video, I keep having more important stuff pop up. Hopefully, I will be able to get to it soon, it will show some riser pieces.

    Is there a reason why you don't use Titebond instead of Aleenes on the individual pieces? Thanks. I just picked up my 1st scroll saw, and had no idea about Intarsia. your videos were great and can't wait to try it out.

    • @Scrollsawforum1
      @Scrollsawforum1  8 років тому

      I like Aleens because sometimes you might need to break the pieces apart after the glue has set to make adjustments. The Aleens doesn't set as strong as Titebond and is easier to take apart, plus it sets up pretty quick. But if you want to use Titebond that's fine, you just might have a little tougher time taking the pieces apart if you need to. Congrats on the new scroll saw and enjoy...Bob

      Any thoughts on using CA glue (Cyanoacrylate / superglue) to join the pieces? Seems like an easy way to quickly bond the pieces with just a few seconds of holding them together.

      Hi Patrick, CA glue is fine if you want to use it. I prefer a glue that gives me extra time to adjust my pieces and maybe even take them apart if I want to do additional sanding to the piece. CA glue is just too permanent for me when connecting the pieces and is not necessary for my use since I will glue the entire project to the backer board with Titebond when it is complete. Bob

    Hi Bob, My hubby is almost blind with Macular D He loves doing intershia. He found your videos on the seashell . Bought the tool from Harbor Freight. I have a question ?? What type of pole do you have the cable hanging from, he said he would try a wood pole, I do not think that is strong enough. Yours looks like some kind of an extension rod. Would you please let me know what it is so we can get his tool set up. Thank from the both of us ,Ann and Don

      Hi Anna, the pole is actually a stainless steel towel bar that I had laying around and repurposed. I'm sure your husband can make something out of wood that will work.

    Would it be a good idea to use a fine file on the left side of the blade while it is running to make it easier to use to correct gaps and just use that blade when needed?

    • @Scrollsawforum1
      @Scrollsawforum1  7 років тому

      Hi Larry, with scroll saw blades it really isn't necessary. I have tried it a few times and after filing it, I found the blades would no longer cut in a predictable manner and had to be thrown away. It simply is something that doesn't need to be done...Bob

    Great tutorial, thanks, I'm a newbie scroll-er. One quick question, if I may; the tool you got from harbor freight that uses dremel accessories, what is it called? I get pretty much all my tools from them. TIA

    Where did you get the hook and pile sanding kit?

    • @Scrollsawforum1
      @Scrollsawforum1  7 років тому +1

      Hi Steve, I have a blog post and links to where you can purchase the hook and loop sanding system on my website here www.scrollsawparadise.com/ scroll down to the bottom of the page, all the purchase links are on the right. I use this sanding system for about 95% of all my sanding, even flat boards so it is well worth the investment if you have a drill press. FYI, I do receive a small commission if you purchase from the links I provided, but that does not affect your purchase price.
